Missouri Route 5 is the longest state highway in Missouri and the only Missouri state highway to traverse the entire state. It is part of a three state, 650 mile highway 5. To the north, it continues into Iowa as Iowa Highway 5 and to the south it enters Arkansas as Highway 5. With only a few exceptions, it is two-lane for its entire length. Business Route 5 serves Milan and Ava.
Route description
Route 5 begins at the Arkansas state line in Ozark County as a continuation of Arkansas Highway 5. Approximately 8.5 miles (13.7km) to the north of the state line, Route 5 meets U.S. 160 after which it forms a 6.2mi (10.0km) east-west concurrency to the east where it enters Gainesville. After leaving its U.S. 160 concurrency to the north, Route 5 continues northwest for approximately 13.2mi (21.2km) before forming a 3.3mi (5.3km) north-south wrong-way concurrency with Route 95 into Wasola. Route 5 enters Douglas County0.6mi (0.97km) north of Wasola.
Thirteen miles into Douglas County, Route 5 forms a four-mile north-south concurrency with Route 76 past Ava, and serves the town itself with a business route. Within the northwest part of Ava, the concurrent routes intersect Route 14. After Route 76 leaves the concurrency to the east, Route 5 continues for 10 miles before entering Wright County.
SC5 begins with a semi-interchange with US521, near Van Wyck. Going northwesterly nearly its entire route, it crosses the Catawba River, entering York County. In Lesslie, it joins US 21, crossing over I-77 before splitting in Rock Hill. Going southwesterly around the downtown area, it overlaps with SC121 (Albright Highway); then going northwesterly again in, overlapping with SC901 (Hackle Boulevard). SC5 exits out of Rock Hill solo again towards York; where there, it teams-up with SC161 and bypass northeasterly around the city. Continuing on its northwesterly direction, it reaches its final destination of Blacksburg, where it connects with US29 before ending at I-85 (exit 102) and SC198.
Speeds along the highway does not exceed 55mph (89km/h), in both urban and rural areas. The highway provides a direct route from both US521 and I-85 to both York and Rock Hill.
US 5 begins at Exit 5 of I-91 northeast of downtown New Haven, heading north through the suburbs of New Haven. It crosses the Quinnipiac River in North Haven, shifting eastward to a different road. US 5 continues north through the town of Wallingford before entering the city of Meriden. North of Meriden, it becomes a four-lane divided highway known as the Berlin Turnpike, where a long overlap with Route 15 also begins. US 5 continues through the southern suburbs of Hartford along the Berlin Turnpike, shifting just south of the city line to the Wilbur Cross Highway, a limited access highway. The Wilbur Cross Highway bypasses downtown Hartford and crosses the Connecticut River on the Charter Oak Bridge into East Hartford. From here, US 5 exits the Wilbur Cross Highway and runs along a four-lane, divided surface road to South Windsor before returning to a two-lane road the rest of the way to the Massachusetts state line in Enfield.

History
During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Ron West was part of a well-remembered Kansas City band, The Chesmann, with his two brothers Gary and Steve. Heavily inspired by British invasion groups, the band played both live covers and recorded original studio material. Gary West was also a member of the band Shooting Star, which scored several modest AOR hits in the late 1970 and early 1980s.
Led by Ron West, the band's self-titled first album was released in 1977 on a label called Panama Records. Even though Panama was an independent label, the band garnered substantial airplay on American FM AOR radio stations, specifically with the track "Movin On". Missouri's first gig was opening for Firefall in Emporia, Kansas. Missouri toured nationally with many major label acts such as Ted Nugent, Golden Earring, among many others.
A second album, "Welcome Two Missouri", was released on the larger and international Polydor label in 1979, including a re-recorded version of "Movin On" minus the original intro. By this time two of the original line up had dropped out. No further recordings except a repackaging of recordings from the previous albums called the best of Missouri.
