Minnesota State Highway 62 (MN62) is a highway in the Twin Cities region of Minnesota. The route was part of Hennepin County Road 62 until 1988, when a portion of the route was inherited by the state. The western terminus of the route is at Interstate Highway 494 in Eden Prairie, where the roadway continues west as Hennepin County Road 62 to Hennepin County Road 101. The eastern terminus of the route is at State Highway 55 near the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport in Minneapolis. Locally, the route is known as "the Crosstown," though signage with this name does not appear on the highway itself, but only on local streets adjacent to the road. It is also used as an alternate name, even by the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Though it does follow the 62nd Street plane for most of its route, that name is less frequently used. Highway 62 is 12 miles (19km) in length.
Route description
State Highway 62 serves as an east–west route between Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Edina, Richfield, Minneapolis, and Fort Snelling. The route is constructed to freeway standards for most of its length, except for the western 1/2 mile, which is an expressway with two signal-controlled intersections. The route is located in Hennepin County.
U.S. Highway10 (US10) is a major divided highway for almost all of its length in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The route runs through the central portion of the state, following generally the alignment of the former Northern Pacific Railway (now BNSF) and connects the cities of Moorhead, Detroit Lakes, Wadena, Little Falls, St. Cloud, Anoka, Saint Paul, and Cottage Grove. US10 within Minnesota is 275 miles (443km) in length.
East of Mounds View, US10 is marked mostly along Interstate Highways until Saint Paul, where the route runs concurrently with US61 to Cottage Grove. US10 then heads east to the Wisconsin state line and exits the state.
Highway 62 serves as an east–west route in southwest Minnesota between the cities of Fulda and Windom.
Highway 62 crosses the Des Moines River in Southbrook Township, Springfield Township, and in the city of Windom.
The route is also known as 11th Street in Belfast Township.
The route is legally defined as part of Constitutional Route 16 in the Minnesota Statutes. It is not marked with this number.
History
Highway 62 was authorized in 1933.
The route was paved by 1942.
A second State Highway 62 exists within the state of Minnesota. In 1988, former Hennepin County Highway 62 in the Twin Cities area was renumbered State Highway 62. Mn/DOT assigned the Twin Cities route its former Hennepin County numbering because of its local familiarity; and further determined that it was not necessary to renumber existing Highway 62 (between Fulda and Windom) because of what Mn/DOT perceived as low potential for confusion of the two routes. This is the only situation where two different state-numbered routes have duplicate numbering.
Minnesota (i/mɪnᵻˈsoʊtə/; locally[ˌmɪnəˈso̞ɾə]) is a state in the Midwestern United States. Minnesota was admitted as the 32nd state on May 11, 1858, created from the eastern half of the Minnesota Territory. The name comes from the Dakota word for "clear blue water". Owing to its large number of lakes, the state is informally known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes". Its official motto is L'Étoile du Nord (French: Star of the North).
Minnesota is the 12th largest in area and the 21st most populous of the U.S. States; nearly 60 percent of its residents live in the Minneapolis–Saint Paulmetropolitan area (known as the "Twin Cities"), the center of transportation, business, industry, education, and government and home to an internationally known arts community. The remainder of the state consists of western prairies now given over to intensive agriculture; deciduous forests in the southeast, now partially cleared, farmed and settled; and the less populated North Woods, used for mining, forestry, and recreation.
Minnesota wine refers to wine made from grapes grown in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Minnesota is part of the largest American Viticultural Area (AVA), the Upper Mississippi Valley AVA, which includes southwest Wisconsin, southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa, and northwest Illinois. The state also has a smaller designated American Viticultural Areas, the Alexandria Lakes AVA. Minnesota is a very cold climate for viticulture and many grapevarieties require protection from the winter weather by being buried under soil for the season. Minnesota is home to extensive research on cold-hardy French hybrid and other grape varieties.
The Minnesota Grape Growers Association (MGGA) is a statewide organization that promotes grape growing and wine making in the state and also in cold-hardy climates. Minnesota is home to the International Cold Climate Wine Competition (ICCWC) hosted annually by a partnership between MGGA and University of Minnesota. This is the only wine competition solely dedicated to the promotion of quality wines made mainly from cold-hardy grape varieties. In 2014, the 6th annual competition saw 284 wines entered from 59 commercial wineries in 11 states. Awards were based on blind tastings by 21 expert judges, who include enologists, wine writers, restaurateurs, retailers, and wine educators.
The Minnesota River is a tributary of the Mississippi River, approximately 332 miles (534km) long, in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It drains a watershed of nearly 17,000 square miles (44,000km2), 14,751 square miles (38,200km2) in Minnesota and about 2,000sqmi (5,200km2) in South Dakota and Iowa.
It rises in southwestern Minnesota, in Big Stone Lake on the Minnesota–South Dakota border just south of the Laurentian Divide at the Traverse Gap portage. It flows southeast to Mankato, then turns northeast. It joins the Mississippi south of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, near the historic Fort Snelling. The valley is one of several distinct regions of Minnesota. Of Dakota language origin, the name Minnesota means "sky-tinted water or cloudy-sky water", from mní (often transcribed as "minne" or "mini") meaning "water" and sóta meaning "sky-tinted" or "cloudy sky", and, refers to the milky-brown color its waters take on when at flood stage. An illustration of the meaning of these words was shown by dropping a little milk into water. For over a century prior to the organization of the Minnesota Territory in 1849, the name St. Pierre (St. Peter) had been generally applied to the river by French and English explorers and writers. Minnesota River is shown on the 1757 edition of Mitchell Map as "Ouadebameniſsouté [Watpá Mnísota] or R. St. Peter". On June 19, 1852, acting upon a request from the Minnesota territorial legislature, the United States Congress decreed the aboriginal name for the river, Minnesota, to be the river’s official name and ordered all agencies of the federal government to use that name when referencing it.

Video shows the moments leading up to fatal motorcycle crash on Minnesota highway
An MnDOT traffic camera captured the moments leading up to a fatal motorcycle crash Wednesday morning on Highway 62.
The video shows that, around 7 a.m., the rider was traveling quickly in the far left lane of Highway 62 near France Avenue when he started to drift dangerously close to the guardrail.
We have edited some of the footage that followed: A minute later, the camera panned and showed bystanders attempting to aid the man, who was motionless, and to the left of the road.
