Minnesota (i/mɪnᵻˈsoʊtə/; locally[ˌmɪnəˈso̞ɾə]) is a state in the Midwestern United States. Minnesota was admitted as the 32nd state on May 11, 1858, created from the eastern half of the Minnesota Territory. The name comes from the Dakota word for "clear blue water". Owing to its large number of lakes, the state is informally known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes". Its official motto is L'Étoile du Nord (French: Star of the North).
Minnesota is the 12th largest in area and the 21st most populous of the U.S. States; nearly 60 percent of its residents live in the Minneapolis–Saint Paulmetropolitan area (known as the "Twin Cities"), the center of transportation, business, industry, education, and government and home to an internationally known arts community. The remainder of the state consists of western prairies now given over to intensive agriculture; deciduous forests in the southeast, now partially cleared, farmed and settled; and the less populated North Woods, used for mining, forestry, and recreation.
The Minnesota River is a tributary of the Mississippi River, approximately 332 miles (534km) long, in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It drains a watershed of nearly 17,000 square miles (44,000km2), 14,751 square miles (38,200km2) in Minnesota and about 2,000sqmi (5,200km2) in South Dakota and Iowa.
It rises in southwestern Minnesota, in Big Stone Lake on the Minnesota–South Dakota border just south of the Laurentian Divide at the Traverse Gap portage. It flows southeast to Mankato, then turns northeast. It joins the Mississippi south of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, near the historic Fort Snelling. The valley is one of several distinct regions of Minnesota. Of Dakota language origin, the name Minnesota means "sky-tinted water or cloudy-sky water", from mní (often transcribed as "minne" or "mini") meaning "water" and sóta meaning "sky-tinted" or "cloudy sky", and, refers to the milky-brown color its waters take on when at flood stage. An illustration of the meaning of these words was shown by dropping a little milk into water. For over a century prior to the organization of the Minnesota Territory in 1849, the name St. Pierre (St. Peter) had been generally applied to the river by French and English explorers and writers. Minnesota River is shown on the 1757 edition of Mitchell Map as "Ouadebameniſsouté [Watpá Mnísota] or R. St. Peter". On June 19, 1852, acting upon a request from the Minnesota territorial legislature, the United States Congress decreed the aboriginal name for the river, Minnesota, to be the river’s official name and ordered all agencies of the federal government to use that name when referencing it.
Wisconsin's geography is diverse, with the Northern Highland and Western Upland along with a part of the Central Plain occupying the western part of the state and lowlands stretching to the shore of Lake Michigan. Wisconsin is second to Michigan in the length of its Great Lakes coastline.
Wisconsin is known as "America's Dairyland" because it is one of the nation's leading dairy producers, particularly famous for cheese. Manufacturing, especially paper products, information technology (IT), and tourism are also major contributors to the state's economy.
The Wisconsin Winery Association is a statewide organization that promotes wine making in the state.
History
The first wine grapes were planted in Wisconsin by Agoston Haraszthy in the mid-19th century. Before he migrated to California and helped to found the wine industry there, he established a vineyard, winery and wine cellars overlooking the Wisconsin River at what is today the Wollersheim Winery near Prairie du Sac. Although Haraszthy found the climate of Wisconsin difficult for wine grape production, later German settlers produced wine using both European and native American grape varieties.
The commission to create the statue of Wisconsin on the top of the dome was originally promised to Helen Farnsworth Mears, originally of Wisconsin. When Daniel Chester French agreed to produce the finial figure, the commission was switched to him.
Description
This work, often referred to as the "Golden Lady", consists of an allegorical figure reminiscent of Athena, dressed in Greek garb, her right arm outstretched to symbolize the state motto, "Forward", and wearing a helmet topped by a badger, the Wisconsin state totem.
The figure's left hand holds a globe with an eagle perched on top. Across the eagle's chest is a large W, for Wisconsin, a detail hard to discern.
Wisconsin is 15ft 5in (4.70m) tall and weighs 3 short tons (2.7t).
The lady is also in a mural in the House of Representatives.

This call made announcers sick to their stomach
In the Minnesota vs. Michigan game on September 28, 2024, the final moments were marked by a controversial call on an onside kick. Minnesota, trailing 27-24, appeared to recover the onside kick, giving them a chance to continue their comeback. However, the referees called an offsides penalty on the Gophers, nullifying the recovery and allowing Michigan to regain possession and secure the win. This call sparked outrage among Minnesota fans and college football commentators, with many questioning the accuracy of the decision and arguing it unfairly favored Michigan

Soloist (Male): Does your opponent deserve such abuse? Freddie: All Soviets deserve abuse. Soloist (Female): But even you must concede he can play. Freddie: Sure, he’s the best red on the circuit, I’ll give him that. Soloist (Male): He hasn’t lost for a long time; he could be a tough nut to crack. Freddie: Listen, if he gets one game off me, it’s because I want to keep press interest going. Soloists: Why do you persist with vicious attacks, ungracious remarks re: opponents, it smacks of a lack of conviction- admit you’re under duress, or that your only skill left is for money not chess. If Soviet life is as grim as you claim, then how come the boys are so good at the game? Though you swear the American dream is clearly the best, you’re no advertisement for life and times in the west. Soloist (Male): Why did you risk the whole match breaking down? Freddie: I don’t know what you’re saying. What are you implying? Soloist (Female): All your outrageous demands, such conceit. Freddie: I don’t see anything outrageous about demanding what I’m worth. Soloist (Male): They pay you all that you ask for and then you demand even more. Freddie: I am the reason you’re all here! Who had heard of Sergievsky? Soloists: It’s hard to believe what we’re reporting. Why so disparaging? Not very sporting. Freddie: Are the Communists sporting? My God! Soloists: Tell all this to the United Nations. Are you an asset to east/west relations? Freddie: What is this? What have the Russians ever done for “east/west relations”? Have you people got any serious questions? Soloist (Female): Will you be quitting for good if you lose? Soloist (Male): How come your second’s a girl, lover boy? Freddie: What did you say? Soloist (Male): How come your second’s a girl, lover boy? Soloists: Well, what did I say? He’s out of his tree, he’s finally flipped and between you and me, he’s no hope of retaining his crown in his frame of mind, in fact he shouldn’t have come here, he should have resigned. Florence (Same time as soloists): Smile! You’ve got your first exclusive story. Now you can bask in his reflected glory. “Naked, unprovoked, Yankee aggression” Oh, what a credit to your great profession! Soloists (Same time as Florence): Well, what did I say?
