Piyush Goyal, the newly appointed mines minister, has set himself the target of increasing the mining sector’s contribution to India’s GDP by 1% in the next 2 to 3 years. Speaking to BloombergQuint immediately after assuming office, Goyal said, “If we can grow at about 30-35% (in terms of the materials excavated) in next two or three years, we can achieve the target of one percent addition to India’s GDP.” The sector currently contributes approximately 2.5% to the country’s GDP.

The Ministry of mines and minerals development has embarked on an online map portal application to ease the traffic of applications for mining licences.
Ministry's Geographical Information Systems Officer TABILA MAZHOMA says the Zambia mining cadastre portal is a map showing a correct status of existing licences and available areas.
He says the app also shows information about the status of applications submitted.
Mr. MAZHOMA told ZNBC News that applicants are able to know the status of the area before applying for a mining licence.
