The Milwaukee Junction neighborhood was constructed in the 1890s to encourage industrial expansion in what was then the far northern section of Detroit.
The area became a hub of early auto body manufacturing, being first a producer of wooden horse carriages and soon providing steel frames for the fledgling auto manufacturers.Fisher Auto Body, having a significant presence here, with both Plant 21 and Plant 23 on Piquette street alone, originally produced wooden horse carriages and was one of the early companies to supply steel auto bodies. Other auto parts companies opened shop in this area not only because of the many auto company manufacturers in the area but also because of the confluence of the two major railroad lines, making it efficient to ship autos and parts to other parts of the nation. Auto manufacturers who moved into the area included Everitt-Metzger-Flanders (E-M-F), Hupp (the Hupmobile), Anderson Electric Car Company, Brush Motor Car Company, Cadillac, Dodge, Packard, Oakland, Studebaker, and Regal.
The first Europeans to pass through the area were French Catholic missionaries and fur traders. In 1818, the French Canadian explorer Solomon Juneau settled in the area, and in 1846 Juneau's town combined with two neighboring towns to incorporate as the City of Milwaukee. Large numbers of German and other immigrants helped increase the city's population during the 1840s and the following decades.
The Milwaukee Union Station was dedicated on August 3, 1965 by the Milwaukee Road to replace their previous Everett Street Depot. The Chicago and North Western Railroad closed their Milwaukee station (Lake Front Depot) and moved their passenger operations to the new Milwaukee Road depot in 1966. The depot was built on West St. Paul Avenue in a modernistic style that proved unpopular quickly after it was erected.

Development revving up at Milwaukee Junction neighborhood
You can't deny the booming development in Downtown Detroit, but some critics worry that growth comes at the expense of other neighborhoods.

Railfanning Milwaukee Junction in Detroit!
On a cool spring Monday, we are at Milwaukee Junction in Detroit catching a variety of action. We caught the ADBF, CN, Conrail, and even Amtrak as we spent the morning on Detroit's east side.

A view out the left-side (heading south, then east) window of Amtrak train #355, the 'Wolverine', in Detroit. Specifically, the location is Milwaukee Junction (I have no idea why it's named that; the Milwaukee Road never ran through here). This location is where two CN / Grand Trunk Western lines meet- the north-south line to Durand and the east-west line from Ontario via Port Huron/Sarnia. Conrail Shared Assets line runs through here heading for East and North Yards, and a branch to Rochester, MI. Detroit Connecting also has a former joint GTW / NYC line that once crossed here and served GTW's Brush Street Station and the Detroit River Carfloats to Windsor. It now ends short of the river.

The Cradle of Detroit's Auto Industry: New Center, Milwaukee Junction 5K.
There's a lot to unpack for this video. I'll show you the New Center and Milwaukee Junction areas of Detroit, along with the Boston-Edison Historic District, and the North End neighborhood. Along the way you'll see the abandoned Fisher Body Plant 21, along with the Ford Piquette Plant, which was where the first Model T's were made. Many of the neighborhoods surrounding the New Center and Milwaukee Junction area look pretty rough as well. Boston-Edison combined with nearby Arden Park is like an island of beautiful homes surrounded by a giant ghetto, and the Fisher Building is beautiful.

In doing so, it crosses two CN tracks. A CN autorack train waits in the distance on the other side of the junction. Shortly, CN C44-9W #2570 appears alongside, running long-hood-forward with an NS Triple Crown RoadRailer train.
