The end of a superpower - The collapse of the Soviet Union | DW Documentary
Russian President Vladimir Putin described the collapse of the Soviet Union as "the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century." This documentary from 2021 shows the path Russian foreign policy has followed under Putin.
[This documentary was originally released in 2021. In February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine.]
On December 25, 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed. Along with it came hope for the end of the Cold War, for independence and freedom for the former Soviet republics. But for many it also brought poverty and war. What remains of the dreams of that time? The documentary includes contemporary witnesses and politicians of the decisive years and shows what has become of the legacy of a world power.

Officially known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the USSR was a one-party state, governed, controlled, and tormented by a single-party rule. That of the Communist Party. No nation has inflicted such destruction on its own population in the name of progress. Power corroded the leadership, leaving the masses to suffer in the name of history. The very people who were supposed to be governing themselves.
There are many factors that affected the Soviet Union’s turbulent history, but the sheer ungovernable vastness of the country was inescapable. It was a nation the size of a continent stretching from Moscow to Vladivostok and from Leningrad to Stalingrad. What we might consider European Russia was dwarfed by the reaches of Siberia. Enacting any kind of policy took force. Complicated, contradictory figureheads would come and go, men, who held this impossible country it seemed by sheer will. Stalin the despot-hero whose cruelty knew few bounds united a nation to defeat Hitler. Khrushchev the crafty libertarian, who preached reform yet allowed an arms race to escalate. Brezhnev, that unreadable member of the old guard, sent history backward. And of course, Gorbachev, who brought vast change, modernization, and détente, yet saw the Soviet Union collapse under his rule – the untenable nation.
Over many painful years, this vast country locked itself away from the rest of the world, paranoid, economically uncertain, and repressive, while still casting a vast shadow across the world. The 20th century was shaped by its convulsions, its purges, its wars, and its leaders.

Soviet Armed Forces in October 1967
A documentary by the U.S. Department of Defense based on an official Soviet documentary titled "I SERVE THE SOVIET UNION".
On the 50th anniversary of Russia's Bolshevik Revolution, Russia's armed forces engaged in a mammoth display of its military might.
This video documents that exercise. The video ends unexpectedly about 2 minutes from the original ending but nothing is lost due to this anomoly.

How Did the Soviet Union Actually Work?
How did the Soviet Union actually function? The USSR was a country of contradictions. It was a state purportedly founded to serve the interests of the working proletariat but that was always ruled either by a small elite (the Communist Party of the Soviet Union) or by one man alone, as it was under the dictator Joseph Stalin. In theory, the Soviet people had votes and a voice, but in practice, a group of about 20, the Politburo, made all major government policies and were accountable only to the party.

When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, in Operation Barbarossa, the Red Army's ground forces had 303 divisions and 22 separate brigades (5.5 million soldiers) including 166 divisions and brigades (2.6 million) garrisoned in the western military districts. The Axis forces deployed on the Eastern Front consisted of 181 divisions and 18 brigades (3 million soldiers). Three Fronts, the Northwestern, Western, and Southwestern conducted the defense of the western borders of the USSR. In the first weeks of the Great Patriotic War the Wehrmacht defeated many Red Army units. The Red Army lost millions of men as prisoners and lost much of its pre-war matériel....

Soviet People For and Against the Invasion of Finland - KGB Files
"We must bring Finland to its knees". These words of one of the inhabitants of Soviet Ukraine, along with dozens of others, ended up in a NKVD report dated December 4, 1939. 4 days before this, the Red Army started a #war against #Finland. Stalin wanted to move the border farther from Leningrad by capturing a part of the neighboring country, and to turn Finland into a satellite state. The #USSR accused its victim of aggression and, using a puppet "government", announced that it was going to liberate the Finnish people. What did ordinary people in the USSR think about that war? Did they believe in state propaganda or sympathize with the Finns? The NKVD documents from the archives of the Security Service of Ukraine tell us about this.

THE WORST SOVIET GENERAL IN WW2! #history #shortvideo#soviet #ww2 #crazyfacts #history #shortvideo
Pavlov was a veteran of the First World War, as well as the Russian Civil War, serving in the Red Army since 1919. He graduated from the Frunze Military Academy in 1928. He then commanded various mechanised and cavalry units. As one of the Soviet military advisers, in 1936–37 he took part in the Spanish Civil War on the Republican side (using the nom de guerre Pablo[1]) and commanded a brigade of Soviet tanks, for which he was made a Hero of the Soviet Union. In contrast to many other officers who took part in that war, he was not purged after his return to the Soviet Union,[2] and was made the Head of the Directorate of Tank and Armoured Car Troops of the Red Army which gave him considerable influence on its development. In particular he insisted that tanks be shifted to infantry support ...

The Red Army lost millions of men as prisoners and lost much of its pre-war matériel. Stalin increased mobilization, and by 1 August 1941, despite 46 divisions lost in combat, the Red Army's strength was 401 divisions.
The Soviet forces were apparently unprepared despite numerous warnings from a variety of sources. They suffered much damage in the field because of mediocre officers, partial mobilization, and an incomplete reorganization. The hasty pre-war forces expansion and the over-promotion of inexperienced officers (owing to the purging of experienced officers) favored the Wehrmacht in combat. The Axis's numeric superiority rendered the combatants' divisional strength approximately equal. A generation of Soviet commanders (notably Georgy Zhukov) learned from the defeats, and Soviet victories in the Battle of Moscow, at Stalingrad, Kursk and later in Operation Bagration proved decisive.
In 1941 the rapid progress of the initial German air and land attacks into the Soviet Union made Red Army logistical support difficult because many depots (and most of the USSR's industrial manufacturing base) lay in the country's invaded western areas, obliging their re-establishment east of the Ural Mountains. Until then the Red Army was often required to improvise or go without weapons, vehicles, and other equipment. The 1941 decision to physically move their manufacturing capacity east of the Ural mountains kept the main Soviet support system out of German reach. In the later stages of the war, the Red Army fielded some excellent weaponry, especially artillery and tanks. The Red Army's heavy KV-1 and medium T-34 tanks outclassed most Wehrmacht armor, but in 1941 most Soviet tank units used older and inferior models

In particular he insisted that tanks be shifted to infantry support roles,[3] which in hindsight turned out to be incorrect. He participated in the Winter War, as well as the border clashes with Japan.
In 1940, Pavlov became the commander of the Western (Belorussian) Special Military District, which became the Soviet Western Front bearing the brunt of German attack during Operation Barbarossa in June 1941. On 22 February 1941, he was one of the first Soviet generals to receive the new rank of General of the Army, inferior only to the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union.
Downfall
In the fall of 1940, Georgy Zhukov started preparing the plans for the military exercise concerning the defence of the Western border of the Soviet Union, which at this time was pushed further to the west due to the annexation of eastern Poland.[4] In his memoirs, Zhukov reports that in this exercise he commanded the Western or Blue forces—the supposed invasion troops—and his opponent was Colonel General Dmitry Pavlov, the commander of the Eastern or Red forces –the supposed Soviet troops. Zhukov describes the exercise as being similar to actual events during the German invasion. At the time, the Eastern, Pavlov's forces had a numerical advantage, but they nonetheless lost the military exercise.
On the night of 21 June 1941, Pavlov was watching a comedy in Kiev when Moscow sent a directive to all military councils in the Western Military Districts of a possible German invasion.[citation needed] Pavlov chose to watch the comedy to its end and this proved to be a fatal mistake in the eyes of his superiors in Moscow.[citation needed] During the first days of Operation Barbarossa his command, Soviet Western Front, suffered a disastrous defeat in the Battle of Białystok–Minsk. During the first days of the invasion, Pavlov was relieved of his command, replaced by Andrey Eremenko (and again by Semyon Timoshenko), arrested and accused of criminal incompetence and treason. He was the only arrested commander of any Soviet front during Operation Barbarossa

This Soviet newsreel recounts the long retreat of Soviet forces during the initial stages of Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the USSR beginning in the summer of 1941.A second part of the film can be seen here: https://youtu.be/2Uqs0jVxzjs
Narration:
Our soldiers displayed their heartfelt allegiance to the Motherland and determination to protect it at the cost of their lives by thwarting the attack of the enemy, whose forces were superior in strength. An incredibly difficult period in the life of our country began. (00.26) Residents of ravaged towns and villages were leaving for the east. The equipment of factories and plants was evacuated. As Lenin taught us, ‘If a war starts, everything should comply with its needs.’ (00.58)
The Party devised a program of military restructuring of the country. ‘The treacherous attack by Fascist Germany against the Soviet Union is continuing. The goal of this attack is to destroy the Soviet system, to occupy Soviet lands, to enslave the peoples of the Soviet Union, to rob our country, to capture our bread and oil, to restore the rule of landholders and capitalists.’ (01.36)
The enemy had already stepped on Soviet soil, took over most of Lithuania, including the cities of Kaunas and Vilnius, occupied part of Latvia, the Brest, Vereiskaya, and Bialystok regions of the Soviet Belarus, and some districts of Western Ukraine. A few other districts were in immediate danger. The goal of the Bolsheviks was to rally the people around the Communist Party and the Soviet government, to selflessly support the Red Army and achieve victory. (02.32) The Party sent 9,000 leading party workers to the front. Tens of thousands of Communists and Komsomol members went to war as political fighters. (03.13) New fighting units were being prepared for the front. The Leningrad Party organization introduced the initiative of forming a People's Militia out of citizens who were unfit for conscription. The Central Committee of the Party approved this initiative. Following the example of Leningrad, People's Militia divisions were created in Moscow and other cities across the country. (03.37) By the end of 1941, almost every second communist of the country was defending the Motherland with arms. Thanks to the example of these communists and Komsomol members and their belief in the just and liberating nature of the war, others began to put their faith into victory. (04.37) Radio broadcasting, word of mouth, visual propaganda, and the press served the same purpose.. (05.19)
Vigilantes were of great help to the Red Army. The resilience of the Soviet troops came from hundreds and thousands of acts of valor of individual soldiers, commanders, and party workers, from the heroic acts of minor and major units. (06.05) But the sudden nature of the first treacherous attack still had an impact. The Fascist armies were moving east. The Brest frontier fortress was already far behind German lines, but its imperishable garrison still refused to surrender under the leadership of the Communists Gavrilov, Fomin, Zubachev, Kizhevatov. (06.30)
Smolensk was the decisive direction of the German military commanders. The main body of Hitler's army was sent here. The Smolensk region formed two armies and militia to help the fighters of the regular army. Almost two-thirds of the Smolensk Party organization were off to the front. (07.05) Here, in the battle of Smolensk, the famous Katyusha rocket launchers were used for the first time. Here the Fascists had to go on the defensive for the first time since the Second World War had begun. (07.52)
At the same time, Germans were approaching Kiev in the southwest. Kiev lodgment. 90,000 militiamen and 30,000 Communists stood up to defend the capital of Ukraine together with the army. The heroic defenders held the bridgehead on the right bank of Dnepr for two and half months. (08.49)
Odessa. (09.32)
Odessa sent 13,000 Communists and 73,000 Komsomol members to the front. The defenders of Odessa were containing almost half of the Romanian army for more than two and half months. The enemy lost 160,000 soldiers and officers here. (09.50)
Out troops left Odessa only following the commander's orders to help the defenders of the Crimean Peninsula.
