Pence was born in Columbus, Indiana, one of six children of Nancy Jane (née Cawley) and Edward J. Pence, Jr., who ran a string of gas stations. His maternal family was of Irish Catholic descent. He was named after his grandfather, Richard Michael Cawley, a Chicago bus driver who came to the United States from Ireland through Ellis Island. He graduated from Columbus North High School in 1977. Pence earned a B.A. in History from Hanover College in 1981 and a J.D. from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1986. While at Hanover, Pence joined the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, serving as his chapter's president.
Former Vice President Mike Pence, who repeated that he won't be endorsing former President Donald Trump, tells "Face the Nation" that Trump calling people arrested in connection to Jan. 6 as "hostages" is "unacceptable." "I think it's very unfortunate at a time that there are American hostages being held in Gaza," Pence said.

Does Mike Pence still believe Donald Trump is a good man?
NPR host Steve Inskeep interviewed the former Vice President, whose new memoir, “So Help Me God,” recounts his life up to the moment when he refused to overturn the 2020 election defeat of then-President Donald Trump.
Asked whether he still considers Trump a good man, Pence replied at considerable length without ever saying that he did. He said only that Trump had authored important achievements but was "wrong" on Jan. 6.
"I truly do believe that only God knows our hearts," he added. "And I'll leave it to others to make their own judgments."
