U-Boats and Naval Warfare - WW1 Documentary
During the First World War the German government made extensive use of submarines, initially against warships and then, as the war progressed, most heavily against merchant shipping. However, the sinking of neutral merchantmen eventually led to diplomatic crises with neutral nations and to war between Germany and the United States.

The Kommuna - Russia’s Bizarre 110 Year Old Warship
Check out Ground News! http://ground.news/calum
The Kommuna is a submarine salvage ship in service with the Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet. A strange double-hulled catamaran design, she has the unique distinction of serving with the Russian Imperial Soviet, and now Russian Federation navy, becoming the oldest active navy ship in the world over a century after her launch.
What is the history of this incredible ship however? Why is it still in service and what is the explanation behind its distinct lack of rust?

Can You Speak British Columbian? Chinook Jargon/Wawa Part 1
Can you speak British Columbian? In 2013 it became clear that Prof Jay Powell was the last speaker of Chinook Jargon in British Columbia who had learned to speak it from native elders. The chain of learning was about to be broken. Sam Sullivan organized a group of people who learned it and kept the flame burning. He then organized weekly Saturday morning Snass learning sessions that have been held every single week since June 2018. This attracted even more speakers.
Dave Robertson, the world's foremost expert in BC Chinook Jargon joined the weekly sessions and now expertly manages them. Many of these sessions have been recorded and uploaded onto the BC Chinook Jargon website. He even teaches the Chinook Pepa aboriginal writing system that was adapted from a French shorthand.

The Live Bait Squadron: the sinking of the HMS Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy 22 September 1914
On the 22th of September 1914 three British cruisers, the HMS Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy were patrolling the waters between England and the Netherlands. On board these obsolete warships were 2,300 crewmen who were taken completely by surprise by a new, rather unknown and destructive weapon: the German U-boat.
In effect the three warships were sitting ducks.
It took only six torpedoes to kill 1,459 men and boys. This sinking of the so-called 'live bait squadron' was one of the biggest naval disasters of the war.
For the next hundred years this catastrophic event received hardly any attention. Which is strange, because the number of victims is similar to that of the sinking of the Titanic, which had gone down just two years previously.
Today, three mass graves lie on the bottom of the...

The Coal Black Sea: Churchill and the Worst Naval Catastrophe of WW1 | Stuart Heaver
On the morning of 22 September 1914, just six weeks into the First World War, three Royal Navy armoured cruisers were sunk by a German U-boat in the southern North Sea. The action lasted less than 90 minutes but the lives of 1,459 men and boys were lost – more than the British losses at the Battle of Trafalgar or in the sinking of RMS Lusitania. Yet, curiously, few have ever heard of the incident.
In this presentation Stuart Heaver tells the extraordinary true story of the disaster from the perspectives of the men serving on HMS Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy, and the German submariners who orchestrated the attack. Stuart will also examine how the ignominious loss provoked widespread criticism of the highly ambitious First Lord of the Admiralty, the 39-year-old Winston Churchill.

Can you join our efforts to revive this remarkable, ancient language? The BC Chinook Jargon initiative is working with Dr Robertson to develop a series of learning materials making it much easier to become fluent in this language. Can you make a commitment to devote yourself to revitalize Chinook Jargon? Please contact us through the website and meet other wonderful people who are also committed to reviving speech communities in the province!!!
Chinook Jargon or Wawa is intimately linked with the history of British Columbia. We might even call one form of it British Columbian. It was spoken widely on the west coast by both aboriginal and non aboriginal people. Much vocabulary comes from Chinook, Nuu-Chah-Nulth(west Vancouver Island) and the Salish language Chehalis with many words from French and Maritime English. The respect for native culture is evident as even European words are pronounced with Chinook accents.
Chinook Jargon is testimony to the roots of British Columbia in the multicultural capital of Fort Vancouver when the territory was called Columbia and the Governor John McLoughlin and his Deputy James Douglas maintained respectful relations with indigenous people.
Chinook Jargon can be considered a Métis language. It was first noted in its current form as a first language of the children in Fort Vancouver; the schoolteacher wrote the first wordlist. The first linguist to study it in 1838, priest Modeste Demers, found it often spoken by families with French speaking fathers and Chinook speaking mothers; they told him the language developed in the milieu of the Hudson's Bay Company and was spread through its trade networks.
From its roots in the Nootka Jargon catalyzed by the voyage of Captain Cook, it developed in the milieu of the Honorable Hudson's Bay Company which governed when proto British Columbia extended down to California and its Capital was Vancouver [now in Washington State]. After the Border Treaty, the Company State and its Chinook Jargon speaking people moved north and morphed into what is now British Columbia.
The Kamloops Wawa newspaper was published in the late 1800s and early 1900s in a French shorthand script that was adapted for its use.
All First Nations languages in British Columbia have adopted many words from Chinook Wawa. Because it is so easy to learn we are developing learning materials for schools and we look forward to the time when Chinook Wawa will once again be accepted as language credits for universities as it was in the 1970s.

Today, three mass graves lie on the bottom of the North Sea only 22 miles off the Dutch coast near Scheveningen.
How did it happen? What has happened since? What is the condition of this naval graveyard nowadays? And how does it look underwater? Questions that will be answered in this intriguing documentary.
More information about this tragic incident is available from The Live Bait Squadron Society www.livebaitsqn-soc.info - membership of this association is free.

While the families of the victims grieved, Churchill succeeded in playing down the significance of the disaster and shifted the blame to those serving at sea to save his faltering career.
Using a range of official and archival records, Stuart Heaver exposes this false narrative and corrects over a century of misinformation to honour those who lost their lives in the worst naval catastrophe of the First World War.
