Danny Thompson

Daniel Henry Edward 'Danny' Thompson (born 4 April 1939) is an English multi-instrumentalist best known as a double bassist and businessman. He has had a long musical career playing with a large variety of other musicians, particularly Richard Thompson (no relation) and John Martyn, but including many others: at various times he has for example played with Nick Drake, Roy Orbison, Julie Felix, Freddie and the Dreamers, Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott, Tom Paxton, Donovan, John McLaughlin, Vivian Stanshall, David Sylvian, Kate Bush, Linda Lewis, Mary Hopkin, Loreena McKennitt, Tim Buckley, and Davey Graham. For four years (1964-1967), he was a member of Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, and he was a founding member of the British folk-jazz band Pentangle. Since 1987, he has also recorded four solo albums. He converted to Islam in 1990.

Biography and career

Thompson was born in Teignmouth, Devon. His father, a miner, joined the Royal Navy at the start of World War II and was lost in action whilst crewing submarines. When Thompson was aged 6, the family moved to London and he was brought up in the working-class area of Battersea. At school he excelled at football and played as a junior for Chelsea, the team he has supported ever since. Whilst at school he learnt guitar, mandolin, trumpet and trombone before settling on the upright bass as his instrument of choice.

Danny Thompson (racing driver)

Danny P. Thompson (born October 28, 1948) is an American race car driver and the son of the late entrepreneur and motorsports innovator Mickey Thompson.

He began his career at age 9, winning his first quarter-midget championship one year later. He moved on to motocross and Formula Atlantic cars in his teens, before graduating to sprint cars and stadium trucks later in life. He took control of the Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group after the death of his father. He left the industry in 1996 following the company's bankruptcy.

In 2003 Thompson succeeded in joining his father in the Bonneville 200 MPH Club. He became the driver of the world's fastest production Ford Mustang in 2008, and is currently restoring his father's 1968 prototype streamliner the Challenger II. He has announced plans to run it at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 2014.

Thompson is responsible for the restoration and exhibition of many historically significant racing vehicles.

Danny Thompson (drummer)

Danny Thompson (May 23, 1967) is an American musician from Naperville, IL. Thompson has been the drummer for the punk rock band Face to Face since 2008.

Career

Danny Thompson joined Face to Face in 2008 after drummer Pete Parada left the band to join The Offspring. Prior to playing with Face to Face, Thompson drummed for Material Issue, The Uprising and Why We Kill.

Business Interests

In addition to drumming in Face to Face, Thompson is the co-owner of Music Factory School of Music in Coasta Mesa, CA and runs a line of men's grooming products called Old Ironsides Gentlemen's Care.

Musical Equipment

Thompson uses LTD Classic Maple drums and Sabian cymbals.

Danny Leon Thompson (February 1, 1947 – December 10, 1976) was a professional baseball player, a major league shortstop from 1970 to 1976.

Born in Wichita, Kansas, Thompson grew up in tiny Capron, Oklahoma, and played college baseball at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, where he was an All-American. He broke into the majors with the Minnesota Twins in 1970 and had his first full season in 1972; he played for them until June 1976, when he and pitcher Bert Blyleven were traded to the Texas Rangers for four others in a six-player deal.

Leukemia

Following a routine pre-season physical the day before his 26th birthday, Thompson was called in for additional tests and diagnosed with granulocytic leukemia in early February 1973, but he continued his major league career for the next four seasons. He received the Hutch Award in Seattle following the 1974 season, and batted .270 in 1975, leading all American League shortstops.

Thompson appeared in 98 games in 1976, and went 1 for 3 in his final start for the Rangers on September 29, appropriately at shortstop in Minnesota's Metropolitan Stadium. In his final game on October 2, less than ten weeks before his death, he was used as a pinch hitter.

On Sunday, August 12th, Danny Thompson laid down a 450.909mph record run at the Bonneville Salt Flats using the Challenger 2, a vehicle originally built by his father, Mickey Thompson, in 1968. This run, averaged with a 446.605mph pass he made the previous day, gives the Challenger 2 a new AA/FS record of 448.757mph, and makes it the world's fastest piston driven record holder. Not bad for a 50 year old race car! As you can tell, it was a hairy ride, with Danny going almost lock-to-lock on the steering wheel to control a slide at over 430mph. Danny Thompson

Daniel Henry Edward 'Danny' Thompson (born 4 April 1939) is an English multi-instrumentalist best known as a double bassist and businessman. He has had a long musical career playing with a large variety of other musicians, particularly Richard Thompson (no relation) and John Martyn, but including many others: at various times he has for example played with Nick Drake, Roy Orbison, Julie Felix, Freddie and the Dreamers, Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott, Tom Paxton, Donovan, John McLaughlin, Vivian Stanshall, David Sylvian, Kate Bush, Linda Lewis, Mary Hopkin, Loreena McKennitt, Tim Buckley, and Davey Graham. For four years (1964-1967), he was a member of Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, and he was a founding member of the British folk-jazz band Pentangle. Since 1987, he has also recorded four solo albums. He converted to Islam in 1990.

Biography and career

Thompson was born in Teignmouth, Devon. His father, a miner, joined the Royal Navy at the start of World War II and was lost in action whilst crewing submarines. When Thompson was aged 6, the family moved to London and he was brought up in the working-class area of Battersea. At school he excelled at football and played as a junior for Chelsea, the team he has supported ever since. Whilst at school he learnt guitar, mandolin, trumpet and trombone before settling on the upright bass as his instrument of choice.
