The District of Metchosin is a coastal community of just over 5000 people in the metro Greater Victoria region of British Columbia. It is part of the Western Communities and one of the 13 regional municipalities. Many Metchosians are operators of small farms (vegetables, orchards, poultry, sheep, some pigs and cattle). Most are retired or work outside the community. There are also many home based businesses (everything from massage and dentistry to international consulting). Located on the edge of a rapidly growing urban area, Metchosin is subject to a variety of pressures. While the municipality has maintained its slow population growth, traffic has exploded due to growth in the larger region.
Metchosians, especially the younger ones, are traditionally friendly rivals of neighbouring communities Sooke, East Sooke, Langford, and Colwood. A 1995 move to merge Metchosin and East Sooke, which has a similar rural-utopian character, failed; some East Sookese adopted the slogan "East Sooke Forever, Metchosin Never!" as they saw the proposition not as a merge but as an assimilation into larger Metchosin. Since then, several pieces of East Sooke have been assimilated into its urban neighbour, Sooke. Remaining rural residents are seeking to join Metchosin, and a new set of studies and consultations started in 2007 and is ongoing.
While visiting Pedder Bay Marina & RV Resort, there is so much to see and explore in the Metchosin area. The nature is plentiful and exploration is endless on this part of Vancouver Island. Only a 40 minute drive from the capital city of BC, you'll find our local places of paradise.
Locations to explore within a 5 minute drive of each other include Pedder Bay Coffee House, East Sooke Park, Sea Bluff Farm, Galloping Goose Trail, Matheson Lake, Metchosin Golf & Country Club, Witty's Lagoon, and My Chosen Cafe.

METCHOSIN -- One by one they drop from a Sea King helicopter into the Pacific off Rocky Point which, early Friday morning, is actually the country of "Kumar."
Armed soldiers from Victoria's Canadian Scottish Regiment and the Rocky Mountain Rangers of Kamloops swim ashore joining the rest of their team working to locate and takeout a target with enemy intelligence to use in future operations.
The army reservists scaling rocky banks with knives between their teeth all work "regular" jobs and have come from around the province to be a part of this complex operation that coordinates sea, land and air forces.
While the infantry regiments establish themselves on land, there is plenty more going on at sea. HMCS Ottawa and Regina are on loan from CFB Esquimalt for the exercise along with Canada's only operational submarine HMCS Victoria, and several U.S. Navy ships from Washington and California.
Their objective on this day is fictional but the intent behind it is to be ready for when it's real. "The last one I can think of is U.S. Marines landing in Somalia. This is an unopposed landing, it's fairly easy, so there's no gunfire to support the landings but this could occur. Small baby steps for us" says the Scottish Regiment's Major Stu Parkinson.
It's a long way from a Friday at the office.
