Messina (/məˈsiːnə/; Italian pronunciation: [mesˈsiːna], Sicilian: Missina; Latin: Messana, Greek: Μεσσήνη) is the capital of the Italian province of Messina. It is the 3rd largest city on the island of Sicily, and the 13th largest city in Italy, with a population of more than 252,000 inhabitants in the city proper and about 650,000 in the province. It is located near the northeast corner of Sicily, at the Strait of Messina, opposite Villa San Giovanni on the mainland, and has close ties with Reggio Calabria.

The city's main resources are its seaports (commercial and military shipyards), cruise tourism, commerce, and agriculture (wine production and cultivating lemons, oranges, mandarin oranges, and olives). The city has been a Roman Catholic Archdiocese and Archimandrite seat since 1548 and is home to a locally important international fair. The city has the University of Messina, founded in 1548 by Ignatius of Loyola.

Messina has a light rail system, Tranvia di Messina, that was opened on 3 April 2003. This line is 7.7 kilometres (4.8 mi) and links the city's central railway station with the city centre and harbour.

Messina (album)

Messina is a 2012 triple album by French singer-songwriter Damien Saez. Each CD was named separately with CD 1 named "Les Échoués", CD 2 "Sur les quais" and CD 3 "Messine". The full set was titled Messina (with an a). the set was released on 17 September 2012. on Wagram Records.

The triple album was not the first by Saez as he had released in 2008 the triple album titled Varsovie - L'Alhambra - Paris. Messina is the name of a Sicilian city of particular significance for Saez. And similar to the Varsovie - L'Alhambra - Paris album, this triple album carries many geographical references and to personalities.

On 29 August 2012, two titles from the album "Betty" and "Les fils d'Artaud" were made available for free downloading. On 16 September 2012, a third track "Messine" was offered free online. Two tracks, "Marie" and "Petite Couturière" were included on album despite being much older recordings.

  Why Italy CAN'T Build a Bridge to Sicily

  The Strait of Messina is all that separates the Italian mainland from Sicily. The waterway is only 2 miles or 3.2 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, and since Sicily is Italy’s largest territory aside from ‘the boot,’ it seems odd that no direct connection exists between the island and the mainland. There are several reasons for this, including lack of funds, geographic concerns, and, like so many other things in Italy, the mafia. But recent plans by the Italian government may change all of this by constructing what would become the world’s longest, tallest, and most destructive suspension bridge. Today we'll take a closer look at these issues, and explain why the planned bridge to Sicily is destined to fail. #mappack #italy #sicily

The waterway is only 2 miles or 3.2 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, and since Sicily is Italy’s largest territory aside from ‘the boot,’ it seems odd that no direct connection exists between the island and the mainland. There are several reasons for this, including lack of funds, geographic concerns, and, like so many other things in Italy, the mafia. But recent plans by the Italian government may change all of this by constructing what would become the world’s longest, tallest, and most destructive suspension bridge. Today we'll take a closer look at these issues, and explain why the planned bridge to Sicily is destined to fail. #mappack #italy #sicily

The waterway is only 2 miles or 3.2 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, and since Sicily is Italy’s largest territory aside from ‘the boot,’ it seems odd that no direct connection exists between the island and the mainland. There are several reasons for this, including lack of funds, geographic concerns, and, like so many other things in Italy, the mafia. But recent plans by the Italian government may change all of this by constructing what would become the world’s longest, tallest, and most destructive suspension bridge.
