Napoleon and the Legendary Black General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas
A gripping tale of revolution, race, and empire, complete with sword fights, romance, and betrayal. The life of France’s first Black general, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas (father of the famed novelist Alexandre Dumas), brings us to Alpine ice cliffs and hostile Egyptian deserts, and features everyone from Louis XVI and Robespierre to Napoleon Bonaparte. This historical documentary aims, most of all, to situate Dumas in that contradictory Age of Revolution, wherein the language of inalienable rights gained prominence during the height of an Atlantic slave trade that subjugated people of African descent.

GENERAL THOMAS ALEXANDRE DUMAS' GOLDEN LEGACY
Born Thomas-Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie on the Caribbean island of Haiti to the Marquis Alexandre Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie, a white French nobleman and Marie-Cessette Dumas, an enslaved woman of African descent. Due to the enslaved status of his mother Dumas was born into slavery. Following the death of his mother he was taken to France by his father, thus gaining his freedom and a noble upbringing, as the son of a Marquis (duke). His rise to fame, as one of France's greatest generals, set the stage for his son and grandson. On par with Napoleon it was his devotion to the French people that led to Napoleon's rise to power.

Thomas Alexandre Dumas: The First Black General in the French Army
Thomas Alexander Dumas
Shortly after the Black Legion was formed Dumas was promoted from corporal to second in command of the legion as the Lieutenant Colonel. Information suggests that Chevalier de Saint-Georges grew disinterested in continuing as a leader in the French army and left the Black Legion under the leadership of Dumas. The Black Legion was highly successful under Dumas, they were so successful that Dumas was promoted to General of La Légion Américaine in 1793, making him the first black person to become a general in the French Army.

Despite the fact that this individual was so briefly depicted in Unity (just appearing in one co-op mission and a few side missions) I still felt he was definitely worth covering in a video. I do apologize for the limited footage of Dumas proper, throughout this episode.

I am an amateur historian. History is not my official field of study, but rather a passion. This series acts as my hobby and as a way to share with you the real history behind characters, groups, events and locations that are depicted in the Assassin’s Creed video game series. Although I work hard to be as detail-oriented as possible, I am clearly not without fault and therefore welcome you to let me know whether you feel I have missed anything important or have misrepresented something in my video.

Alexandre Dumas wrote some of the most widely-read books of all time, among them “The Three Musketeers” and the “Count of Monte Christo.” Lesser known is that some of his most famous characters were inspired by his father, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas. The History Guy recalls the forgotten story of the man who inspired some of literature's greatest adventure heroes.
