The lift span can be fully opened to allow large commercial vessels to pass. During summer, the lift section remains partially elevated every half-hour between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. for about 15 minutes. This allows smaller commercial and recreational boat traffic. The bridge is currently the only one of the three Piscataqua River bridges with provisions for pedestrians and bicycles. New Hampshire and Maine designated the bridge as part of their State Bicycle Routes, and the bridge is part of the proposed East Coast Greenway.
History
Previous bridge
Constructed between 1920 and 1923, the original Memorial Bridge was the first without toll to span the Piscataqua between Portsmouth and Kittery. The bridge was constructed as a joint venture between the states of Maine and New Hampshire and the federal government. It was dedicated as a World War I memorial.
Native Americans of the Abenaki and other Algonquian languages-speaking nations, and their predecessors, inhabited the territory of coastal New Hampshire for thousands of years before European contact.
The first known European to explore and write about the area was Martin Pring in 1603. The Piscataqua River is a tidal estuary with a swift current, but forms a good natural harbor. The west bank of the harbor was settled by English colonists in 1630 and named Strawbery Banke, after the many wild strawberries growing there. The village was fortified by Fort William and Mary. Strategically located for trade between upstream industries and mercantile interests abroad, the port prospered. Fishing, lumber and shipbuilding were principal businesses of the region.EnslavedAfricans were imported as laborers as early as 1645 and were integral to building the city's prosperity. Portsmouth was part of the Triangle Trade, which made significant profits from slavery.
In January 1776 it became the first of the British North American colonies to establish a government independent of the Kingdom of Great Britain's authority and it was the first to establish its own state constitution. Six months later, it became one of the original 13 states that founded the United States of America, and in June 1788 it was the ninth state to ratify the Constitution, bringing that document into effect.
Concord is the state capital, while Manchester is the largest city in the state. It has no general sales tax, nor is personal income (other than interest and dividends) taxed at either the state or local level. It is known for the New Hampshire primary, the first primary in the U.S. presidential election cycle. Its license plates carry the state motto, "Live Free or Die". The motto comes from a statement written by the Revolutionary War general John Stark, hero of the Battle of Bennington. The state's nickname, "The Granite State", refers to its extensive granite formations and quarries.
The 2001 New Hampshire 300 was a NASCARWinston Cup race held at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The race was originally scheduled for September 16, but was postponed to November 23 due to the September 11 attacks of that year. New Hampshire was the season finale as a result.
Summary
NASCAR did not want to cancel the event, but there were no scheduled off weeks from the September 16 date, so NASCAR's only option was November 23–25, the Thanksgiving weekend. The postponement would be a challenge for Goodyear, as they were not expecting a New Hampshire race in November. Goodyear brought a tire they hoped would suit the cold conditions. NBC carried the broadcast live except for the Pacific Coast, which was on tape delay to allow the third hour of Today.
The race saw Robby Gordon, driving the #31 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing, pick up his first career win. The race was also known to be the last race to have 42 cars or less until the 2014 Quaker State 400, with both races having 42 cars. 14% of this race was held under caution flag while the average green flag run was considered to be 32 laps.
The Memorial Bridge is a two-lane, 785 feet (239m) long bridge spanning the Roanoke River along U.S. Route 11 (Memorial Avenue) in Roanoke, Virginia. The bridge serves as a connection between the southwestern areas of the city (including the Grandin Village area) with central Roanoke. Built by contractor W.W. Boxley, the bridge consists of five 120 feet (37m) spans, with construction commencing in summer 1925. The bridge officially opened to traffic on May 6, 1926, at a final cost of $282,750.
Although officially open to traffic for over four months, its official dedication occurred on August 30 with U.S. Representative Clifton Woodrum in attendance. The delay in its dedication was attributed to delays involving the creation of the bronze, dedication plaques. It is officially dedicated to Roanoke's veterans of World War I.
The bridge features five plaques, with their contents determined by the Roanoke City Council. Four of them feature quotations from notable historic figures: Patrick Henry, Theodore Roosevelt, Stonewall Jackson and Thomas Jefferson; with the fifth containing the names of all the soldiers from Roanoke who died in World War I. Although dedicated to the veterans who fought in World War I, many did not attend due to the dedication ceremony due to not being originally conceived as a monument to former servicemen. The bridge was officially rededicated on November 11, 1991, sixty-five years after its original dedication.

I Drove Through Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This Is What I Saw.
Portsmouth might be the most charming New England town of all!
For this video, I drove through the beautiful seaside community of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. After a brief bit of clouds the day before, this day was spectacular, and as you’ll see, tons of people showed up from all over New England to take in the sun on a late winter day. It was on a Sunday, March 21, 2021 at about 2 in the afternoon.
Portsmouth is pretty much the only real somewhat large city along New Hampshire’s coast. Study after study call Portsmouth one of the best seaside communities in the country. It’s a vibrant place where you can shop and dine and feel safe. There’s only 20,000 people here, and the it was founded all the way back in 1653. Much of the downtown area we’ll explore has kept its historical vibe, but w...

Much of the downtown area we’ll explore has kept its historical vibe, but with a modern flare.
This is actually one of the coolest places I’ve visited. I think you’ll like it too.
While out and about in Portsmouth, I enjoyed a salmon dinner, which was so good I forgot to take a picture of it until I was almost finished. Here was the view from where I ate at - a place called River House. And no, they didn’t pay me to say that. I wish they did.

Join us as we take a quick trip up to the beautiful Portsmouth, New Hampshire to show you some of the top things to do in the city. We'll show you top locations throughout Portsmouth like delicious restaurants, quirky stores, and historic sites like the Strawberry Banke Museum.
Portsmouth is one of our favorite cities in New England, and it's not hard to see why when watching our travel vlog. The beautiful architecture, the winding streets, the fun storefronts, and the cafes whose chairs and tables spill out onto the sidewalks give the city an almost European feel. Portsmouth is a must-stop location for anyone traveling in the Northeast USA.

As Election Day for the 2024 U.S. Presidential race unfolds, the country watches closely as Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump make their final appeals to voters. Both candidates are focusing heavily on swing states like Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Michigan, where small voter shifts could determine the election outcome. Early voting has seen record participation, underscoring the high stakes and deep voter engagement. With polls indicating a tight race, the final hours of campaigning are intensifying, highlighting key issues like inflation, healthcare, and national security.
According to a new poll, Donald Trump is leading in all swing states. The seven swing states could hold the key to the final results and the poll’s outcome reflects a tight race in the November 5 election. The seven swing states are: Nevada, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Arizona.

As Election Day kicked off, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump were tied in the first official votes cast in New Hampshire's midnight voting. The early results, though symbolic, set the stage for what is expected to be a highly competitive race in the key swing state. With both candidates neck-and-neck, New Hampshire remains a critical battleground in the 2024 presidential election.

Does everyone in New Hampshire hate people from Massachusetts?
Is everyone in New Hampshire a libertarian?
And is everyone here white?
We’ll answer those questions and talk about a lot more! So let’s hop in the car - but we don’t have to wear our belts! Cause we’re drive through and Unbox the state of New Hampshire!
Okay so this looks pretty charming. A neat little town tucked away into the forests. The kind of place where they know your coffee order by heart, and where you can probably get all the local gossip from the maple syrup guy. This is the REAL America, mister. Before it got all screwed up. Of course, nowhere is perfect, and we’ll get to that, too.
New Hampshire sure doesn’t look like much, but it’s actually the 42nd most populous state. There’s actually big cities and stuff to do. I mean, it’s not ALL plaid flannel jacket wearing crotchety gun loving forest dwellers.
It’s beautiful. It’s safe. Kinda boring and very independent. To get a well-rounded view of this state, we need to look at the whole place and then visit each different area. Then we’ll know what New Hampshire is REALLY like.
This is New Hampshire. As you can see, most of the state is heavily forested with small towns scattered throughout, and most of the population and entertainment is on the southern end of the state. But we’re going to begin up here first. Northern New Hampshire is kinda like Alabama with snow.

Watch live as the first votes are cast on Election Day 2024 in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.
Will Americans choose to return Republican Donald Trump to the White House? Or will voters elect Democrat Kamala Harris to be the nation's first female president?
#trump #kamalaharris #news #election2024
The first ballot has been cast in the US for the 2024 Presidential elections in New Hampshire's small township of Dixville Notch. Dixville Notch becomes the first place in the US to cast a ballot as the country goes into elections on November 5 and November 6. The township is located along the US-Canada border and sits at the northern tip of New Hampshire. It opened and closed its poll just after midnight ET in a tradition that dates back to 1960, CNN reported.
The place saw a split decision, recording three votes for Kamala Harris and three for former US President Donald Trump. This is in line with the national trends predicted for the two leaders through various polls in the country.
