They are characterised by alternate, usually pinnate leaves without stipules, and by syncarpous, apparently bisexual (but actually mostly cryptically unisexual) flowersborne in panicles, cymes, spikes, or clusters. Most species are evergreen, but some are deciduous, either in the dry season or in winter.
The family includes about 50 genera and 550 species, with a pantropical distribution; one genus (Toona) extends north into temperate China and south into southeast Australia, and another (Melia) nearly as far north.

Singthupi kan / Fried Meliaceae Shoots
Locally known as 'Singthupi' in our local dialect, the tender shoots of this plant are first cooked in a pressure cooker until it whistles and the water is discarded. It is a seasonal delicacy enjoyed by people belonging to the Zomi community. The rest of the preparation are as follows:
1. Heat Oil (preferably mustard oil)
2. Add Chopped Onions and Chopped Garlic
3. 1tsp Turmeric
4. Red Chilli Powder
5. Finally Add The Shoots.
6. Cook For 25-30 Minutes On Low Flame or until the desired texture is met.

Melia dubia originates from the Meliaceae family and is a native species of tree to India, lately one of the most extensively planted tree species in Southern India. Categorized under fast growing tree species, the wood fetching enormous demand in plywood industries, hence branded as a short duration money whirling plantation tree. Currently plantation wood satisfies some 33% of global demand. With doubling of global population between 1960 and 2010, reaching nearly 7 billion and global wood use increased more than 50% in the same period. Consequently, the country’s demand for wood has tended to follow population growth.
