Can any Number be a Base?
There are many different ways to express numbers. The most popular is definitely the decimal system, or in other words base 10. Base 2 and base 16 are also used in computers. But did you know that we can make number bases not only from integers?

logarithm with negative base and negative input
What if we have both a negative base and a negative input in a logarithm! People often say we cannot have a negative number inside of a logarithm. Most of the time log(negative) gives us an imaginary number. But since (-2)^3=-8, so what do you think the answer to log base -2 of -8?

In this video, we learn how to deal with exponents that have a negative base (integer base). This problem arises because of notation. -2^2 is an entirely different problem then (-2)^2. The first asks for the opposite of two squared, which is negative four. The second asks for two factors of negative two which is positive four.

Some of the numerical base numbers that are mentioned in this video are Base 10, Base 10, Base 10, Base 10, Base 10, and Base 10... Just kidding, kinda. That IS how these bases would write their own base number haha (but we'll discuss that in a later episode). Of course it's easier to describe their names from a fixed standpoint like Base Ten, so let me rephrase it in more familiar terms: Some of the numerical base systems that are mentioned in this video are Base 10, Base 12, Base 6, Base 2, Base "1", Base -2, Base -10, Base -6, and a brief mention of some stranger potential bases at the end....

Grade 7th on Khan Academy: 7th grade takes much of what you learned in 6th grade to an entirely new level. In particular, you'll now learn to do everything with negative numbers (we're talking everything--adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, fractions, decimals... everything!). You'll also take your algebraic skills to new heights by tackling two-step equations. 7th grade is also when you start thinking about probability (which is super important for realizing that casinos and lotteries are really just ways of taking money away from people who don't know probability) and dig deeper into the world of data and statistics. Onward! (Content was selected for this grade level based on a typical curriculum in the United States.)
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.
