The top reason I wanted to visit Crete, the biggest island of Greece, was to experience the food. Cretan food is known for its incredible Mediterranean based food diet. Even though it’s an island surrounded by the sea, Crete is such a huge island that it’s actually more well known for lamb and meat rather than seafood.

The top reason I wanted to visit Crete, the biggest island of Greece, was to experience the food. Cretan food is known for its incredible Mediterranean based food diet. Even though it’s an island surrounded by the sea, Crete is such a huge island that it’s actually more well known for lamb and meat rather than seafood.
One day while my wife and I were in Chania, Crete, we drove over to a countryside restaurant in the mountains called Ντουνιάς (I’m not sure of the English name). Immediately as we arrived, and met the incredibly passionate owner, and watched him cooking traditional Crete food in clay pots over fire, I knew it was going to be an incredible food experience.
Before eating, I took a quick walk around the farm, to see all the produce and animals they had on their property. The owner was quick to mention to met that it wasn’t just a restaurant, but a farm. Everything he cooked was from his farm on his land - the meat, the vegetables, the fruit, the seasonings, even the wine. Everything was local and seasonal.
After walking around, I just asked the owner to serve me a few of his favorite dishes of the day. We enjoyed some incredible house wine, bread, and then mountain goat. Everything was purely delicious, seasoned with wine and rosemary, and full of natural Mediterranean heb flavors. We were also served a few more Cretan dishes, all of which were stunningly good.
My only complaint was that we didn’t plan to stay long enough. We had to eat, and then head back to Chania town because I had something else planned that day as well. It’s the type of restaurant you could go and hang out for the entire day.

(1) Mediterranean chicken thighs. Braised and roasted in one pan. An explosion of the healthy Mediterranean flavours! Mediterranean chicken thighs, cooked using chicken thighs with the bone. It’s the cooking with the bone that keeps the thigh juicy and flavourful making it the tastiest part of the chicken. Similar to a Fricassée, it’s first sautéed in olive oil and then gently braised in the oven in its own juices until cooked moist and tender. Always a hit with any chicken lovers.
(2) Braised Chickpeas Mediterranean Style. Healthy Vegan Meal.This chickpea recipe is Mediterranean Greek style and so healthy. It’s cheap to make and perfect when there’s a shortage of fresh ingredients. The chickpeas can be used from cans or dried in packets. If dried, you’ll have to soak them overnight, then cook them until tender. Accompany them with rustic sour dough bread that’s been toasted, drizzled with olive oil. A great meal at anytime. Enjoy My Mediterranean Style Braised Chickpeas.
(3) Mediterranean Baked White Fish, in a tomato and black olive sauce. A simple and healthy Mediterranean dish ready to serve in 45 minutes. The sour dough bread is crunchy on top and also soaks up the sauce on the bottom. Enjoy Baked White Fish today, it’s so easy and tasty!
(4) Snapper Fish Mediterraneo. A trip to paradise and back! I’m sure you’ve all heard of the Mediterranean diet which is good for the heart. A large component of this lifestyle is fish, tomatoes and olive oil. This recipe has heart plus more, although healthy, it’s really about the incredible combination of flavours, if you’ve ever been near the Mediterranean sea, this will bring back memories (can you hear the waves crashing on the rocks?). It’s relatively easy to make and the crunchy pops of salty capers bring in that extra texture that will make your taste buds rock! You can use any other similar white fish if Snapper is not available in your area. Buy a whole fish that’s been filleted with the skin on, and make it fresh! I think I could eat this everyday!
(5) Mediterranean Baked Beans. a Healthy Vegetarian Meal. A nutritious and delicious Mediterranean meal. The beans are creamy and succulent, full of flavours and topped with a toasted olive oil parsley crust. This recipe is also perfect for vegans and vegetarians, simply use vegetable stock instead of chicken. It’s best to soak the beans the day before, however you can cook them from dry if you don’t have the time. They will take longer and be a little mushier. Even though the beans will bake for over 40 minutes, don’t under cook the beans when boiling, try and cook them so they are firm but ready to eat before baking. Enjoy my healthy Mediterranean Baked Beans.
(6) Mediterranean Spiral Pasta. Vegetarian meal made with eggplant, capsicum, sun dried tomatoes, olives and feta cheese. This spiral pasta is called “Fusilli” which comes from a word meaning rifle as it looks like the inside of a barrel gun. It’s a cork screw shape pasta designed to retain some of the sauce for more flavour in each mouthful. This recipe is vegetarian and uses char grilled vegetables. It’s made with eggplant, capsicum or bell pepper, green olives and sun dried tomatoes. You can usually buy them already grilled from your deli which will half the cooking and prep time. Or grill them yourself on your griddle for a fully home made meal.

The Mediterranean diet is a diet inspired by the eating habits of people who live near the Mediterranean Sea. When initially formulated in the 1960s, it drew on the cuisines of Greece, Italy, France and Spain. In decades since, it has also incorporated other Mediterranean cuisines, such as those in Turkey, the Balkans, the Middle East, North Africa and Portugal.
The principal aspects of this diet include proportionally high consumption of olive oil, legumes, unrefined cereals, fruits, and vegetables, moderate to high consumption of fish, moderate consumption of dairy products (mostly as cheese and yogurt), moderate wine consumption, and low consumption of non-fish meat products. Olive oil has been studied as a potential health factor for reducing all-cause mortality and the risk of chronic diseases.
The Mediterranean diet is associated with a reduction in all-cause mortality in observational studies. There is some evidence that the Mediterranean diet lowers the risk of heart disease and early death, although a 2019 review determined that the evidence had low quality and was uncertain. The American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association recommend the Mediterranean diet as a healthy dietary pattern that may reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes, respectively. The Mediterranean diet may help with weight loss in obese people. The Mediterranean diet is one of three healthy diets recommended in the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, along with the DASH diet and vegetarian diet. The Mediterranean and DASH diets are two of the main sources for the MIND diet recommendations.
The Mediterranean diet as a nutritional recommendation is different from the cultural practices that UNESCO listed in 2010 under the heading "Mediterranean diet" on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity: "a set of skills, knowledge, rituals, symbols and traditions concerning crops, harvesting, fishing, animal husbandry, conservation, processing, cooking, and particularly the sharing and consumption of food", not as a particular set of foods. Its sponsors include Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Morocco, Spain and Portugal.
