A maternity den, in the animal kingdom, is a lair where the mother gives birth and nurtures the young, when they are in a vulnerable life stage. While such dens are typically subterranean, they may also be snow caves or simply beneath rock ledges. Characteristically there is an entrance, and optionally an exit corridor, in addition to a principal chamber.
Examples
The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) creates a maternity den either in an earthen subterranean or in a snow cave. On the Hudson Bay Plain in Manitoba, Canada, many of these subterranean dens are situated in the Wapusk National Park, from which bears migrate to the Hudson Bay when the ice pack forms. The maternity den is the bear's shelter for most of the winter. "When all the other polar bears are heading off to the openness of the ocean, the pregnant female polar bears begin looking for a maternity den. This maternity den is usually in a snow bank, or along an ice patch of ocean shore. It is here that the female polar bear will go into a hibernation type state. Female polar bears dig their own maternity den. It is important the the[sic] female polar bears have fed enough in the spring and summer before fall, because of the scarcity of food on land when winter comes. While in the maternity den, the mother polar bear will not eat, drink or defecate. The female polar bear will stay in the maternity den and give birth to her cubs."
Augrabies National Park 2021 Thread-waisted wasp preparing maternity den
This wasp usually forms breeding colonies but with each female excavating her individual maternity burrow. After digging the burrow she hunts for caterpillars, which she paralyses with her venom. She then takes the caterpillars into the burrow, lays an egg on one and then closes the burrow. Now comes the intricate part where she selects small pebbles to create a barrier near the mouth of the burrow. Just watch how she selects for the correct pebbles. Once all pebbles are in place she then covers the entrance with sand and flies away.
And we humans think we are so clever and this is a simple insect. We wonder if the politicians will get this right; doubtful.

IJsberin Olinka verkent kraamverblijf/Polar bear Olinka discovers maternity den
#Bear When pregnant, polar bears enter their maternity dens in November and fast for #Shorts
When pregnant, polar bears enter their maternity dens in November and fast for anywhere from four to eight months, neither eating nor drinking. Their sole purpose is to provide for their cubs.
Cubs are usually born in December, and measure 30 to 35 cm (12 -14 inches) at birth and weigh little more than half a kg (one pound). They grow quickly, nourished by the richness of their mother’s milk (which is 36% fat), and are ready to leave the den in the early spring, in March or April.
The mother will continue to nurse her cubs for a year or more. The cubs will stay with their mother until they're two-and-a-half- to three-years-old.

The upcoming period is an exciting one for Rotterdam zoo: Is polar bear Olinka pregnant or not? The signs are certainly positive. Olinka and Eric (Rotterdam zoo's male polar bear) mated several times last spring. The maternity den is open now for Olinka. When she is ready, Olinka can withdrawn into her maternity den. Right now she spents much time in her den, but also comes out to eat.
This movie shows how she is discovering her dark and silent in her den. When she is ready, the doors of her den will close. Cameras and infrared lights have been installed in Olinka's dark den so that the keepers can keep an eye on her progress.
