Chios Mastic Mastiha (Greek:Μαστίχα) is a resin obtained from the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus). In pharmacies and nature shops, it is called "Arabic gum" (not to be confused with gum arabic) and "Yemen gum". In Greece, it is known as the "tears of Chios," being traditionally produced on that Greek island, and, like other natural resins, is produced in "tears" or droplets.
Originally a sap, mastic is sun-dried into pieces of brittle, translucent resin. When chewed, the resin softens and becomes a bright white and opaque gum. The flavor is bitter at first, but after some chewing, it releases a refreshing, slightly pine or cedar-like flavor.
The word mastic is derived from the Greek verb, μαστιχειν (mastichein) "to gnash the teeth", which is the source of the English word masticate. The word mastic is a synonym for gum in many languages.
Commerce
Within the European Union, mastic production in Chios is granted protected designation of origin. The island's mastic production is controlled by a co-operative of medieval villages, collectively known as the 'Mastichochoria' (Μαστιχοχώρια), which is also located in southern Chios. There is even a small Museum of Mastic in the village of Pyrgi.
Precise numbers are difficult to determine, but as of 2010, there are thought to be 300–315 thousand species of plants, of which the great majority, some 260–290 thousand, are seed plants (see the table below). Green plants provide most of the world's molecular oxygen and are the basis of most of the earth's ecologies, especially on land. Plants that produce grains, fruits and vegetables form mankind's basic foodstuffs, and have been domesticated for millennia. Plants are used as ornaments and, until recently and in great variety, they have served as the source of most medicines and drugs. The scientific study of plants is known as botany, a branch of biology.
The plantá (which comes from the verb to plant; in Valencian, plantà) is the act of erecting a Falla or bonfire monument, in the Fallas or the Bonfires of Saint John, festivals held respectively in March and June in different localities of the Community of Valencia (Spain). The plantà is currently considered the exact moment when the falla or bonfire is completely finished and ready to be visited, with all its “ninots” (human figures made of combustible materials, such as cardboard or wood, which has a critical or mocking nature), posters and a variety of features (lights, matted grass, interpretive signs...).
In the Fallas of Valencia, the plantá takes place on March 15, when all the Falla monuments must be positioned correctly. The reason is that the jury appointed by the Central Fallera committee has to go to the next day to assess the falla. Formerly, the plantà began and ended the same day but, due to the complexity of the monuments and the fact that the makers of Fallas are responsible for several Fallas monuments at the same time, it usually begins a few days before. The burning of the Falla or cremá is carried out four days later, on the night of March 19.
Mastiha: The Unique Mastic Gum of Chios People Call ‘White Gold’
http://GreekReporter.com - Mastic, often referred to as the “Tears of Chios” or the “White Gold of Chios,” is a product produced only on that particular Greek island. High global demand for Chios mastic | Money Talks
For centuries, farmers on one Greek island have made a living cultivating a rare and precious crop. Mastic trees grown only on the southern tip of Chios. They produce a uniquely flavoured resin, and it's in demand all around the world.

Woodturning - Plywood Lampshade
Welcome to another woodturning project! This week I turned a lampshade by cutting plywood into small cubes and casting them in epoxy resin. Pretty simple concept, only the turning part took a bit, since the lampshade is quite larger than a bowl.
Hope you enjoy the video!

Turning a window vase / Wood Turning
Getting a wood turning hybrid blank that already has resin in it can be a curse or a blessing, it all depends on how you think about it. I know a few turners that almost panic at the thoughts of turning resin. I get all of my exotic blanks from a friend who makes river tables and sells me his offcuts. Frequently they have resin running through them. Over the years I have learned to adapt to this and now look forward to getting them. I enjoy the challenge and opportunity to turn something different. It does mean that I had finally get some carbide wood turning tools and learn how to use them as when turning resin they really can get you out of trouble.

Wood turning can be a dangerous hobby. My videos show my methods of turning and if you do not feel comfortable with my methods please do not copy them but rather use a method you feel comfortable using. Your safety is your responsibility as is the safety in your workshop. Enjoy the videos, hopefully something inspires you or helps you along the way.
