Mastering Start To Finish: A Step by Step Guide to Loud and Clear Masters
In this video, I turned the camera on while mastering a mix to show you the steps I took to make it loud, clear and ready for release.
Initially, the peak loudness of the mix was at -0.3dB but the average loudness of the mix was too low. This meant that it sounded quiet on most playback systems and could not be turned up to a good listening level. My main objectives were to increase the average loudness without creating any audible distortion or ducking and to bring a little more excitement to the mix. I also listened critically to ensure there were no issues or edits missed.

Picking The Right Mastering Engineer | Don't Get Fooled!
Picking the right mastering engineer can be a challenge. It's really tough to give our songs or mixes to another engineer after we have put so much work into them. I do believe having having a second set of ears on your mix is the right move though. Choosing the right mastering engineer is challenging... but we just have to soft through the duds. I recently discovered that a lot of these "well known" engineers are ripping us off! In this video I will show you how to listen to your masters correctly so that you can be sure that there is an improvement on your mix. I will also show you some of the horrible results I got back from some of these well known engineers.

In each case, he critiques the mix, matches overall loudness for comparison and proceeds to master while A-B’ing with the unmastered version. He divulges on precise EQ alterations, de-essing, soft saturation and limiting considerations, and explains why he uses little or no compression or stereo widening. He also comments on streaming platform algorithms and mastering for various formats.

►Gear I am using and more notes:
Interface: Lynx Hilo
Headphones: Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro
Speakers: PSI A23-M
DAW: FL Studio 20 (all daws can do this, free or paid)
Plugins: You can use any EQ and limiter. I chose the Youlean Loudness meter (free), Ozone Vintage Limiter, EQ and Maximiser.
Q) Why are you not using more scopes and analysers?
A) I have some more scopes on my interface but when you get used to listening on a good system, your ears can pick out the issues more easily.
Q) Why are you not using analogue gear or "analogue" plugins?
A) I love using both but I felt this mix did not need any more analogue character!
Q) Do you master using headphones?
A) I use the Beyerdynamic DT1990 when mastering, especially for final checks.
Many engineers push for higher sample rates such as 96kHz or 192kHz to try and give the impression of higher quality. Higher sample rates often lead to lower quality. This is due to intermodulation distortion caused by inaudible frequencies.
Unless the AD/DA converters are world class and you have an incredible playback system capable of reproducing 0Hz-96kHz with almost zero distortion then higher sample rates than 48kHz will offer no improvement to your recordings, mixes and masters. Oversampling inside plugins is a different discussion entirely, as this is a digital process and often does lead to better results. TL;DR: Higher sample rate does not equate to higher quality of music.

In this sneak peek we take a look at John Greenham's process when mastering the world-wide hit song 'Bad Guy' by Billie Eilish
Step inside the private studio of elite mastering engineer John Greenham! In his debut MWTM series, Greenham takes you through the process of how he mastered Grammy award-winning records for Billie Eilish and songs by the artists K.Flay and Donna Missal. With the sessions open in Sequoia, John demonstrates his approach on four different tracks. You will learn how he set up the elements of his entire analog and digital signal chains to bring the expertly-mixed material to a new level. Greenham shows the impact of his work by referencing the received mixes and bypassing inserts throughout the process. You'll hear the subtle effects of every separate piece of gear and plug-in he combined to enrich the audio with depth and energy. Aside from focussing on the program material, John elaborates on a number of topics pertinent to his field including monitors, clocking, room design, metering, and more!
