Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (Explained in 4 Minutes)
Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory in psychology comprising a five-tier model of human needs. The five-step pyramid model proposes that Base needs must be met before higher needs can be tackled. If a base need is not met, an individual’s drive, desire, and motivation will be to meet that base need, not a higher need.

Self-actualization is about finding your unique strengths and gifts and applying them to the world around you, for a fulfilling and purposeful life. The idea of self-actualization was first popularized by Abraham Maslow, who developed his Hierarchy of Needs theory in the 1970s. But modern cognitive psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman challenges that iconic ‘pyramid’ of needs, by proposing a new model that reflects our modern world.
Scott's own struggles, including an auditory processing disorder, led him to understand that traditional measures of intelligence, like IQ ...

STAGE 1
First, there are physiological needs, such as the need to breathe, eat, drink or sleep. The moment we got enough of that and we feel awake and our bellies are full, we get motivated by the next thing.
STAGE 2
Now we want safety. We try to earn money, build up resources and look for shelter that protects us against dangers. Once we are satisfied and feel safe, we have time to think about what we want next.
STAGE 3
At stage three we seek love and belonging. We desire to be close to family and friends, belong to a society or join a gang. But the moment we feel completely part of a group we already wish to be a little different than the rest.
At stage four we look for esteem, self-confidence, and respect from our peers. We want to be someone. If we have money, we buy a fancy watch. If we have a brain, we write or think or work a lot. Motivation to perform and compete is now at its highest. Students, sportsmen, and inventors excel. Neil Armstrong even flew to the moon.
STAGE 5
Only if we breathe and drink and eat and sleep enough and we feel safe and part of a group and still special, only then we can reach level five: self-actualization. Now we can relax, be creative, accept facts for what they are, give back or do whatever we want. No more pressure, unless of course there is trouble below.
If you are a leader and believe in the theory, use it. First, make sure everyone has eaten well. Then make them feel safe and help them belong to a group. Once they feel they belong, they are ready to stand out and excel.

Scott's own struggles, including an auditory processing disorder, led him to understand that traditional measures of intelligence, like IQ tests, don't capture the full potential of individuals. To better represent the self-actualization journey, Scott proposes a sailboat model: the boat's stability represents safety, connection, and self-esteem, and the sail represents exploration, purpose, and transcendence.
Unlike the linear pyramid, the sailboat model reflects integration of all needs, changing narratives, and creating new meanings. For Scott, and Stand Together, the ongoing journey of self-actualization involves helping others on their unique journeys, recognizing that what is good for individuals can create a thriving society.

Kaufman lives in Philadelphia and completed his doctorate in cognitive psychology from Yale University in 2009 and received his masters degree in experimental psychology from Cambridge University in 2005, where he was a Gates Cambridge Scholar.
His latest book Transcend: The New Science of Self-Actualization at https://amzn.to/2KyAL5t
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:
SCOTT BARRY KAUFMAN: People get a lot of things wrong about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. First of all, Maslow never even drew a pyramid. A lot of people might not know that as you're probably very used to seeing a diagram on Facebook or in your introductory psychology class or management class. So you see this pyramid with self-actualization at the top and different needs. I looked through Maslow's writings, and he never actually drew a pyramid to represent his theory. He actually viewed human – it was very clear to Maslow that life is not a video game. It's not as though you reach some level in life like safety needs and then you reach the safety needs and you get a certain number of that and then some voice from above is like congrats, you've unlocked connection. And then you go do, do, do, do, do and you move up to connection. It's not how life works. And Maslow is very clear about that. In a lot of ways Maslow was a developmental psychologist at heart. He really believed that human development was constantly this two steps forward, one step back dynamic.
We're constantly choosing the growth option, and then we're failing in some way or we have some struggle which is an inevitable part of life. And then we continue forward. Life is not some trek up a mountain and then you reach self-actualization as though you've achieved self-actualization and the final credits come on. Again, continuing the video game metaphor. Life is not like that. Self-development is a process. It's constantly in a form of development and we are constantly becoming, our being in the world is constantly becoming. And Maslow is very clear about that.
Abraham Maslow made it very clear that self-actualization is not the same as achievement. A lot of people in fact may achieve quite a bit in their lives and may be on the cover of magazines, may have all the awards, the whole trophy shelf of their house that they show off and still feel deeply, deeply unfulfilled. We feel much more fulfilled when we actualize our potentialities, our deepest potentials, the things that make us unique, the things that we can uniquely contribute to the world in ways that have a positive impact on the world. Just realizing your talents without the context of the meaning behind it is a recipe for a lot of talented people to live a very unfulfilled life.
So, Maslow defines self-actualization as becoming everything that you're capable of becoming and that you're most uniquely capable of becoming. So we have a lot of things, a lot of potentials that we share with other humans. We have the need for safety. We have the need for connection. We have the need for respect and a certain level of feeling worthy or self-esteem. We share that with others, but Maslow thought of self-actualization as those potentialities within you that, if grown to full heights, will have the biggest impact on the world uniquely. What do you most uniquely have to contribute to this world? I think that's how Maslow really thought about self-actualization. That's how I tend to think about self-actualization...

When we imagine Maslow's famous hierarchy of needs, we visualize a pyramid. This is all wrong, says humanistic psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman.
This is because life isn't a video game, where you unlock new levels until you reach the final prize of self-actualization. In fact, Maslow viewed human development as a two steps forward, one step back dynamic.
Kaufman rebuilt Maslow's hierarchy of needs, updating it for the 21st century with a solid scientific foundation. And a better metaphor for this is a sailboat.

SCOTT BARRY KAUFMAN:
Scott Barry Kaufman, Ph.D., is scientific director of the Imagination Institute in the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania, where he investigates the measurement and development of intelligence, imagination, and creativity. He has written or edited six previous books, including Ungifted: Intelligence Redefined. He is also co-founder of The Creativity Post, host of The Psychology Podcast, and he writes the blog Beautiful Minds for Scientific American. Kaufman lives in Philadelphia and completed his doctorate in cognitive psychology from Yale University in 2009 and received his masters degree in experimental psychology from Cambridge University in 2005, where he was a Gates Cambridge Scholar.

🔵 BASIC PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS
Fundamental to Maslow’s hierarchy are the basic physiological needs for food, water, air, shelter, sleep and warmth which are all essential in order to maintain biological wellbeing and survival.
🔵 SAFETY NEEDS
Safety needs include the need to feel both physically and psychologically safe. This involves feeling safe from illness, threat and violence. But it also represents feeling safe from family problems, financial difficulties or unemployment. Finding a job, saving money and moving to a safe area of town are all examples of actions motivated by our safety needs.
🔵 RELATIONSHIP NEEDS
Relationship needs are concerned with the giving and receiving of love, affection and feelings of belonging. According to Maslow, we all possess a need for a sense of belonging and acceptance among social groups which includes feeling a sense of belonging to your family, friends, religious group, an online community, even sports teams and work colleagues.
🔵 ESTEEM NEEDS
The need to feel competent and confident about your own ability to solve problems is implicit in the next set of needs, esteem needs. This includes the need for respect from others such as status and recognition, It’s also the the need for self-respect, self-competence and feelings of mastery.
🔵 SELF ACTUALISATION
At the peak of Maslow’s hierarchy is the need for self-actualisation and the drive towards knowledge and the realisation of your full potential. This is about the desire to accomplish everything that you can, to become the most that you can be. This can be a desire to be the best parent, create great art, develop your athletic performance, create music and so forth.
🔵 LATER DEVELOPMENTS (8 STAGE MODEL)
In the 1970’s Maslow upgraded his model to include cognitive needs and aesthetic needs. Cognitive needs refers to the desire to learn, explore and gain knowledge.Aesthetic needs refers to the motivation to view a beautiful piece of art, listen to a pleasing pice of music or enjoy your surroundings when walking in nature.
Just before Maslow’s death he added another dimension to the hierarchy, Self-transcendence. This involves transcending your personal concerns and seeing yourself, life and others from a higher perspective. This includes spirituality or giving back to the community without any self interest. Buddha, sages and religious saints are examples of people that reached transcendence.
