Masaya Nicaragua - Culture
Considered to be Nicaragua's most folkloric department, the city of Masaya and the surrounding areas abound with culture, traditional artwork, and handicrafts. From handwoven hammocks to terra cotta pottery, furniture, and musical instruments, Masaya specializes in most everything creative.
It's highly recommended to spend an afternoon visiting the group of picturesque artisan villages known as the Pueblos Blancos. Visitors can stop by workshops to watch the artists at work or enjoy a casual stroll through the quiet towns. Chances are you'll even find a keepsake to take home with you.
The natural jewelof this region is the freshwater Crater Lake, Laguna de Apoyo. Famed to be Nicaragua's cleanest swimming hole, the fresh water lake is a perfect respite for any traveler. Measuring 200 mete...

Masaya Volcano
Masaya is the most active volcano in the region. It is actually made up of two volcanoes; Masaya and Nindiri with a total of five craters. The Spanish first described the volcano in 1524. Since then, Masaya has erupted at least 19 times. From 1965 to 1979 Masaya contained an active lava lake. The last reported eruption event at Volcan de Masaya was in 2003, when a plume reportedly shot ~4.6km into the air. Masaya is an unusual basaltic volcano because it has had explosive eruptions. The eruption in 4550 B.C. was one of the largest on Earth in the last 10,000 years.

Masaya (from Nahuatl : Masayan 'Place of deer' ) is a municipality and city in the Republic of Nicaragua , head of the department of Masaya . It is 28 kilometers from the capital of Managua and is part of the Metropolitan Region of Managua .
It is known as " City of Flowers " and " Cradle of Nicaraguan Folklore " for its great cultural vigor; however, given that Nicaragua is multicultural, Masaya has currently been called the Capital of Nicaraguan Folklore. 4 Within the territorial and administrative division of the Captaincy General of Guatemala there was the so-called " Corregimiento de Monimbó". Currently there is the indigenous community of Monimbó.
Toponymy
Etymologically " Masaya ", formerly " Masāyān " derives from the language of the Nahuas (a variant of Nahuatl or Pipil ) and comes from the word masātl which means "deer" and the particle -yān which denotes "site or place". That is, " deer place ."

Measuring 200 meters in depth at its lowest point, it's the deepest point in Central America but stays surprisingly warm because of the thermal activity below the surface.
While easily accessible by car, the lake is surprisingly undeveloped. Visitors can hide away in one of the few hotels encircling the shores of the lake and feel like they are the only ones there. Toucan, hummingbirds, howler and white-faced monkeys are a common sight for those who choose to stay for a day or two.
The department of Masaya is also home to Nicaragua's most accessible volcano, Volcán Masaya. If the wind is blowing in the right direction, you might even get a whiff of sulpher emitting from this very much active volcano. Hiking trails allow visitors to further explore the national park and there is also a very interesting museum at the bottom.
Another interesting site in the area is the historical fortress, El Coyotepe. Built in 1893 and used as a prison during the Somoza regime, the dungeons and fortress can now be explored on a guided tour led by the Boy Scouts. This historical site is also great for its breathtaking views.

Masaya, Nicaragua
Masaya is the capital city of Masaya Department in Nicaragua. It is situated approximately 31 km southeast of Managua. It is located just east of the Masaya Volcano, an active volcano from which the city takes its name. Laguna de Masaya is often times confused with the Apoyo Lagoon.
Masaya is known as "The Cradle of Nicaraguan Folklore.”
Nicaraguan's favorite sport is baseball. Their stadium is called "Stadium Roberto Clemente.” The Masaya baseball team is called "Fieras."
Laguna Masaya is 10.1km from Volcano Masaya.
The main market in Masaya is located next to the central bus station where you can find the best deals of all sorts of souvenirs. It is the very heart of Nicaraguan handicrafts. They make everything from hammocks, typical outfits, toys, statues, & more.
There are 788 species of birds in Nicaragua.
Nicaragua’s national bird is known as the “Guardabarranco.”
Nicaragua’s national flower is known as the “sacuanjoche.”
I'm told that Masaya is most famous for its traditional dish "Baho" you gotta try it. It’s made out of two different plantains, yucca, beef, a special salad & is usually served on a banana leaf. The whole dish is steamed for a long time in banana leaves. The word baho itself comes from the verb “vaporize”.
We paired our baho with real fruit smoothies. Mine was made with orange juice & watermelon. My dad had orange juice, pineapple, mango & banana.

Masaya, called the City of Flowers, is the capital city of the Masaya department of Nicaragua.
It is situated approximately 14 km north of Granada and 17 km south from Managua. The town of Masaya is situated just South of the Masaya volcano (Volcan de Masaya), an active Volcano from which the city takes its name. The 2005 population estimate was 146,000.
Masaya is located centrally to a large agricultural production region in Nicaragua. Much of the production from the departments of Masaya and Carazo and the surrounding areas is shipped through Masaya on its way north, towards Managua and Leon. Masaya is also a notable industrial center, producing footwear and clothing. Other industries in the city include the processing of fiber and the manufacture of cigars, leather products, soap, and starch. Many of the communities surrounding Masaya produce hardwood and wicker furniture, and there is a neighborhood in Masaya near the lake dedicated to the production of hammocks.
Masaya is known as "The Cradle of Nicaraguan Folklore" and is the very heart of Nicaraguan handicrafts. The main market in Masaya and is located next to the central bus station. The market is divided into sections, with each section serving a different need. Aside from unique Nicaraguan products such as hand woven hammocks, embroidered blouses, wood carvings, and hemp weaving the market is very diverse. An entire section of the market is dedicated to selling electronic devices and clothing, while another area is reserved for raw meat. Everything is available in the market from hardware and beauty supplies to produce from the surrounding area.
The Mercardo de Artesanias (Craft Market) is located inside what used to be the "mercado viejo" (old market), a 1900s structure that is located near the center of the city and a couple of blocks away from the general population market. These market has been revitalized and set as a tourist spot, where crafts from Masaya and other areas of Nicaragua can be found. In addition, every thursday night there is a Noche de Verbena or Night of Revelry, where folkloric dances are presented and nicaraguan food is available for a very reasonable price (~ $1 - $2, depending on the entertainment).
Masaya is noted for the annual fall fiesta of San Jerónimo, which is rooted in the Roman Catholic faith of the people who celebrate their patron saint, San Jerónimo. Although many people, including some Nicaraguans, may consider this event a cultural event without participating in the religious content, the vast majority are rendering their devotion to their saint when they participate in the folkloric dances and other street processions, such as the carnivalesque "Torovenado" celebrations, which often have groups and individuals who perform satires of local and national political figures. This celebration is famous within the country to the extensiveness (~ 3 months) and richness of folkloric elements.
The historical city center has open plazas and two large 16th Century baroque architecture churches.
