Martial law in the Philippines (Tagalog:Batas Militar sa Pilipinas; Spanish: ley marcial en Filipinas) refers to several intermittent periods in Philippine history wherein the Philippine head of state (such as the President) proclaims that an area is placed under the control of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Martial law is declared either when there is near-violent civil unrest or in cases of major natural disasters, however most countries use a different legal construct like "state of emergency".
Hostilities that began the Philippine Revolution of 1896 started on the evening of 29 August 1896, when hundreds of rebels attacked the Civil Guard garrison in Pasig, just as hundreds of other rebels personally led by Andrés Bonifacio were massing in San Juan del Monte, which they attacked hours later on the 30th. Bonifacio planned to capture the San Juan del Monte powder magazine along with a water station supplying Manila. The defending Spaniards were outnumbered, and fonce piece pirates pmugaiaff rebels until reinforcements arrived. Once reinforced, the Spaniards drove Bonifacio's forces back with heavy casualties. Elsewhere rebels attacked Mandaluyong, Sampaloc, Santa Ana, Pandacan, Pateros, Marikina, and Caloocan, as well as Makati and Taguig. Balintawak in Caloocan saw intense fighting. Rebel troops tended to gravitate towards fighting in San Juan del Monte and Sampaloc. South of Manila, a thousand-strong rebel force attacked a small force of civil guards. In Pandacan Katipuneros attacked the parish church, making the parish priest run for his life.
Martial law is the imposition of the highest-ranking military officer as the military governor or as the head of the government, thus removing all power from the previous executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government. It is usually imposed temporarily when the government or civilian authorities fail to function effectively (e.g., maintain order and security, or provide essential services).
Martial law can be used by governments to enforce their rule over the public. Such incidents may occur after a coup d'état (such as Thailand in 2006 and 2014); when threatened by popular protest (China, Tiananmen Square protests of 1989); to suppress political opposition (Poland in 1981); or to stabilize insurrections or perceived insurrections (Canada, The October Crisis of 1970). Martial law may be declared in cases of major natural disasters; however, most countries use a different legal construct, such as a state of emergency.
Martial law has also been imposed during conflicts and in cases of occupations, where the absence of any other civil government provides for an unstable population. Examples of this form of military rule include post World War II reconstruction in Germany and Japan as well as the southern reconstruction following the U.S. Civil War.
Investigating the mysterious death of a colleague, LAPD cops Sean Thompson, who is now a detective, and "Billie" Blake begin to uncover a deadly ring of murder and corruption. Their search leads to a nightclub, where the rich and powerful are entertained by a stable of beautiful girls and protected by martial arts experts hired by a ruthless crime lord. When Thompson is called off the investigation by his commander, Billie goes undercover and infiltrates the ring on her own; soon, both are facing impossible odds in a climactic battle.
Release dates
The film made its world debut at the American Film Market in October 1991, but would eventually see wide release in the United States only on home video. In the Philippines, where Rothrock was already an A-list star, the film opened in January 1992, exhibited in Manila theaters as a "super roadshow presentation" with tickets priced at P 14 for orchestra seats and P 18 for the balcony. The movie would be released on videocassette in August 1992 by MCA/Universal Home Video. The film was released on DVD in Europe, by Bellevue Entertainment. It is part of a movie package that also contains Savate, Martial Law and Mission of Justice, but the film has yet to arrive onto DVD in the United States.
The Philippines (i/ˈfɪlᵻpiːnz/; Filipino:Pilipinas[ˌpɪlɪˈpinɐs]), officially known as the Republic of the Philippines (Filipino:Republika ng Pilipinas), is a sovereignisland country in Southeast Asia situated in the western Pacific Ocean. It consists of about 7,500 islands that are categorized broadly under three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The capital city of the Philippines is Manila and the most populous city is Quezon City; both are part of Metro Manila.
To the north of the Philippines across the Luzon Strait lies Taiwan; Vietnam sits west across the South China Sea; southwest lies Malaysia in the island of Borneo across the Sulu Sea, and to the south the Celebes Sea separates it from other islands of Indonesia; while to the east it is bounded by the Philippine Sea and the island-nation of Palau. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and close to the equator makes the Philippines prone to earthquakes and typhoons, but also endows it with abundant natural resources and some of the world's greatest biodiversity. At approximately 300,000 square kilometers (115,831sqmi), the Philippines is the 72nd-largest country in the world.
Marcus Valerius Martialis (known in English as Martial/ˈmɑːrʃəl/) (March, between 38 and 41 AD – between 102 and 104 AD), was a Roman poet from Hispania (the Iberian Peninsula) best known for his twelve books of Epigrams, published in Rome between AD 86 and 103, during the reigns of the emperorsDomitian, Nerva and Trajan. In these short, witty poems he cheerfully satirises city life and the scandalous activities of his acquaintances, and romanticises his provincial upbringing. He wrote a total of 1,561, of which 1,235 are in elegiac couplets. He is considered to be the creator of the modern epigram.
Early life
Knowledge of his origins and early life are derived almost entirely from his works, which can be more or less dated according to the well-known events to which they refer. In Book X of his Epigrams, composed between 95 and 98, he mentions celebrating his fifty-seventh birthday; hence he was born during March 38, 39, 40 or 41 AD (x. 24, 1),
under Caligula or Claudius. His place of birth was Augusta Bilbilis (now Calatayud) in Hispania Tarraconensis. His parents, Fronto and Flaccilla, appear to have died in his youth.

Forty years ago, President Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law in the Philippines and his absolute rule over the country continued for another 14 years. Thousands of people were tortured and killed during that time, until he was forced out of power in 1986. But decades later, the victims and families of those who suffered under his rule continue to wait for compensation from the government. Al Jazeera's Jamela Alindogan reports from Manila.

The Philippines is possibly the most intriguing nation of maritime Southeast Asia. The archipelago has almost eight thousand islands that form the apex of the Coral Triangle of the Asian Pacific, as well as abundant marine life that constitutes almost half of this magnificent area’s oceanic megadiversity. Created from volcanic activity, the archipelago offers everything from extensive beaches to tropical forests and Himalayan-type highlands. Lush valleys and world-renowned rice terraces nestle between the mountains and volcanoes. The Philippines boasts an overwhelming array of biodiversity, both fauna and flora, with many of the species being endemic. The islands have not always been as distant from the mainland, and as sea levels rose and fell during the ice ages, the Philippines became home to successive waves of migrants over the millennia. The Philippines is as old as it is beautiful, and it has produced one of the earliest examples of ancient humankind on Earth and provides a wealth of ancient artifacts from human civilizations, as well as prehistoric creatures.

The Philippines has imposed martial law in the restive province of Mindanao and has warned it might be extended to the whole country. The epicenter of that violence has been the city of Marawi, where a siege to root out militants left at least 19 dead over the weekend. The Philippine government says the rebels are linked to Daesh, and could pose a threat to the entire nation. We discuss how severe the threats are and how the Philippine government looks to tackle them.

Almost 30 years ago, a U.S. court ruled that victims of human rights violations by the Ferdinand Marcos regime in the Philippines should be compensated. The former president's alleged graft, estimated to be as much as $10 billion by the Philippine government, set off what was arguably the most ambitious global treasure hunt of all time, as investigators and lawyers scrambled to track down the fortune.

The numbers — 70,000 detained, 35,000 tortured, 3,200 killed — represent the victims of PresidentFerdinand E. Marcos’ era of martial law, from 1972 to 1986. They mark one of the darkest periods in the Philippines’ history ....
In 2017, Duterte declared martial law for 60 days in Muslim-majority Mindanao, a historically resource-rich and war-torn region with the highest rates of poverty in the Philippines and a 400-year history of resisting colonial forces.
Never forget that 50 years ago this month, the dictator Ferdinand Marcos placed the entire Philippine archipelago under martial law ... period remains one of the darkest in Philippine history.
