The Monster Walks is a 1932 American Pre-Code black-and-white horror film directed by Frank R. Strayer.
SYNOPSIS
People in an old dark house on a stormy night are menaced by a killer ape.
The film opens with Ruth Earlton and her fiancé Dr. Ted Carver arriving at her father's house. She has been told that her father has died, and is returning to find out what will be done with the estate. They arrive on a stormy night, and are greeted by her invalid uncle Robert, the housekeeper Mrs. Krug and the housekeeper's son Hanns.
While exploring the mansion, Ruth is dismayed to find a large ape her father used to conduct experiments in the basement. She and the others then gather to learn how the Earlton estate will be divided. Earlton has left his estate to Ruth, but it will go to her uncle Robert in the event of her death. Very small monthly sums are also left to the housekeeper Mrs. Krug and her son Hanns, and these two are very upset about the small amount of the allowance.
When Ruth goes to bed that night, a large, hairy hand reaches through the headboard and attempts to strangle her. When she screams, it disappears. Her fiancé and Mrs. Krug arrive at her room, and attempt to comfort her. Ted gives her a sleeping potion, and she falls asleep in a chair in her room while Mrs. Krug stays with her, taking the bed.
The hairy hand reappears through the headboard and strangles Mrs. Krug this time, killing her. Ruth awakens and alerts the rest of the household to what has happened. Afterward, Hanns Krug meets with Robert Earlton in secret, who tells him that their plan to kill Ruth Earlton has failed and Hanns has accidentally murdered his own mother. Hanns blames Robert for this, and after mentioning that Robert is actually his father, he strangles him as well, leaving him for dead.
Dr. Clayton visits Robert's room, and Robert regains consciousness. He tells Clayton about the plan he and Hanns had to murder Ruth, so that the estate would go to them instead. Clayton rushes out to find Ruth and warn her. She has already been taken by Hanns to the basement though, where he attempts to force the ape to kill her. The ape turns on him instead, killing him. Clayton arrives to find Ruth alive and well.

The wealthy Kent Mortimer (Wellington A. Playter) has been bankrupted, and while attending a dress ball with his fiancee, Adele Hoyt (Gertrude Astor), he tells her that he must sell all of his household goods to pay off his debts. Adele immediately breaks their engagement and returns all of his gifts, except for a string of pearls which she drops on the sidewalk as she enters her cab. Mary Stevens (Priscilla Dean), a pickpocket and thief, snatches up the pearls and flees the scene with the police in hot pursuit. She sees an open door in a mansion and takes refuge inside.
The mansion is that of Kent Mortimer, and she learns that the pearls really belong to him, but she doesn't let him know she has them. Mary later gets a job as a waitress, and one day Mortimer wanders into the restaurant where they meet again. He begins to date Mary regularly, and Stoop Connors, one of Mary's fellow gang members, gets jealous and shoots Mortimer in the arm. Mary helps Mortimer to walk home (he's living in a run down apartment building now), and learns that his rent is overdue and that he is about to be evicted very soon. She sells two of the pearls to a fence named Fadem (Spottiswoode Aitken), and gives the money to Mortimer's landlady to bail him out.
Fadem and Stoop search Mary's apartment trying to find the rest of the pearls, but she constantly carries the pearls on her. Mortimer is shocked to learn of Mary's true past life as a criminal and tells her they cannot see each other any longer. Mary sends the pearls back to Adele who, in turn, returns them to Mortimer. When Mortimer finds out what Mary has done, he goes off in search of her to beg her forgiveness, but Fadem and Stoop have kidnapped Mary and are trying to force her to tell them where the pearls are.
Mortimer breaks in just as they are choking her to death. He attacks the two men, and a terrible fight ensues. Mary slips from the room and calls the burly bartender (Kalla Pasha) from the cafe below, a huge brute of a man who worships Mary, and he arrives just in time to save Mortimer from being stabbed to death. Fadem and Stoop both slink off like rats into the night, and Mortimer winds up with Mary. They buy a farm out in the country, and hire the bartender as their handyman.

'Old San Francisco is a 1927 American silent historical drama film starring Dolores Costello and featuring Warner Oland. The film, which was produced and distributed by Warner Bros., was directed by Alan Crosland.
Plot
Chris Buckwell, cruel and greedy czar of San Francisco's Tenderloin District, is heartless in his persecution of the Chinese, though he himself is secretly a half-caste, part Chinese and part European. Buckwell, eager to possess the land of Don Hernandez Vasquez, sends Michael Brandon, an unscrupulous attorney, to make an offer. Brandon's nephew, Terrence, meets the grandee's beautiful daughter, Dolores, while Vasquez refuses the offer. Terry tries to save the Vasquez land grants, but when Chris causes the grandee's death, Dolores takes an oath to avenge her father. Learning that Chris is half Chinese, Dolores induces his feeble-minded dwarf brother to denounce him; he captures her and Terry, but they are saved from white slavery by the great earthquake of 1906 that kills the villain.

Production
The film was released in a silent version and in a Vitaphone version, with sound-on-disc recording of music and sound effects only. It was the fifth Warner Brothers feature film to have Vitaphone musical accompaniment. Just one month later, on October 6, Warner Bros. released The Jazz Singer with music, sound effects, and spoken dialogue. Warner Bros. later reused some of the footage from Old San Francisco for the 1906 San Francisco earthquake sequence in The Sisters (1938). This is Charles Emmett Mack's final film appearance; he was killed in an automobile accident six months prior to the film's release.
Reception and box office
The film was a commercial success but it was considered a sub-par feature for its salacious elements. The New York Post called it "violently melodramatic and preposterous in the extreme -- and one of the silliest pictures ever made."
A slightly later reviewer wondered cynically why it had not been censored: "Just as the villain is giving thanks to Buddha, the San Francisco earthquake intervenes to save [Dolores and Terry], thus explaining a catastrophe that cost many lives. Old San Francisco was not censored because it satisfied the one great tenet of the movie censors: 'God is a force in the world that moves to preserve Christian virginity.' "
According to Warner Bros records the film earned $466,000 domestically and $172,000 foreign.
Preservation status
A print of the film still exists at the Library of Congress, George Eastman House and Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research, as well as its Vitaphone soundtrack and has been restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive in association with other organizations such as the Library of Congress and the Museum of Modern Art. And was released on manufactured-on-demand DVD by the Warner Archive Collection series on September 15, 2009.
