Israeli tanks crossed the border into Lebanon on Saturday and headed towards the Lebanese village of Maroun al-Ras.
Several Israeli soldiers, backed by artillery and tank fire, moved into the village and said it was under Israeli control.
But Lebanese security sources said the Israeli military had made incursions of only a few hundred meters (yards) into Maroun al-Ras and Yaroun villages.
The Israeli army says Maroun al-Ras is a launching point for rocket attacks on northern Israel, including those on the Israeli city Nazareth.

STORYLINE
Israeli tanks crossed the border into Lebanon on Saturday and headed towards the Lebanese village of Maroun al-Ras.
Several Israeli soldiers, backed by artillery and tank fire, moved into the village and said it was under Israeli control.
But Lebanese security sources said the Israeli military had made incursions of only a few hundred meters (yards) into Maroun al-Ras and Yaroun villages.
The Israeli army says Maroun al-Ras is a launching point for rocket attacks on northern Israel, including those on the Israeli city Nazareth.
Israeli forces have kept up the pressure on southern Lebanese border towns, pounding them with artillery fire throughout the night and making brief incursions.

STORYLINE:
Large explosions shook southern Lebanon on Sunday as Israel continued its bombardment of the country.
Similarly, rockets pounded northern Israel throughout the morning, with many hitting Haifa and its densely populated suburbs
Morning footage shot by AP Television showed a Hezbollah flag flying near the Lebanese border town of Maroun al-Ras.
Maroun al-Ras is believed to be a launching point for rocket attacks on northern Israel, including those on the Israeli city Nazareth.
About 32 local residents are taking refuge at the UN observers post there.
Almost the entire remaining population of the village, which had swelled from 1,500 to 2,300 with summer visitors before the crisis broke out, were believed to have fled, Lebanese security officials said.
Many border villages are now nearly empty, but as Israeli troops advance into Lebanon, they are likely to encounter towns and villages where tens of thousands are believed still trapped in their homes.
More than 373 people, the vast majority of them civilians, have been killed in Lebanon.
Fifteen Israeli civilians and 20 soldiers have also died since the fighting erupted twelve days ago.

STORYLINE
Israeli artillery and Apache helicopters pounded the large Lebanese border village of Maroun al-Ras on Sunday as Israel's offensive against Hezbollah entered its twelfth day.
Israeli soldiers had battled militants throughout the day on Saturday, raiding Maroun al-Ras in several waves before finally taking control, military officials said.
In an act of defiance, a Hezbollah flag was posted on Sunday morning near the town.
More than 30 local residents have taken refuge at the United Nation observers' outpost here.
Almost the entire remaining population of the village, which had swelled from 1,500 to 2,300 with summer visitors before the crisis broke out, are believed to have fled, according to Lebanese security officials.
Maroun al-Ras, like many border villages, is now nearly empty.
But as Israeli troops advance into Lebanon, they are likely to encounter towns and villages where tens of thousands are believed still trapped in their homes.
Meanwhile, more Israeli ground forces were moving towards the Israel Lebanon border on Sunday morning.
A convoy of military vehicles and soldiers was seen on the highway near Kiryat Shemona in northern Israel en route to positions along the border.
The growing use of ground forces, 12 days into the fighting, signalled Israeli recognition that its air strikes alone were not enough to drive Hezbollah out of southern Lebanon.
Israeli military officials have said they want to push Hezbollah beyond the Litani River, about 30 kilometres (20 miles) north of the border, with the Lebanese army deploying in the border zone.

STORYLINE:
Smoke rose on Saturday from the southern Lebanon town of Bint Jbail, the morning after a heavy night of fighting between Israeli troops and Hezbollah guerillas in the town.
According to the Israeli army 26 Hezbollah fighters were killed in the skirmishes. No Israelis died, the army said, but Israel Radio said six soldiers were wounded.
Hezbollah has verified 35 guerrilla casualties. The competing claims could not be resolved independently.
Meanwhile Israeli troops in the Avivim area, near the Israel-Lebanon border, made early preparations on Saturday for the 18th day of its bloody offensive in Lebanon.
Shelling could be heard, meanwhile, in the southern Lebanon town of Maroun al-Ras.
Israel has faced fiercer resistance than expected during its advance across the border in its campaign against Hezbollah.
On Friday Israeli warplanes and artillery intensified their strikes, hitting Hezbollah positions and crushing houses and roads in towns in southern Lebanon, killing at least 12 people, officials said.
Israel launched its military bombardment against Lebanon's population, infrastructure and Hezbollah fighters on July 12 in response to the militants' capture of two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border attack.
Since then, Israeli planes have bombed what they say are Hezbollah's headquarters, officials and hideouts in south and east Lebanon.
The southern suburbs of Beirut, where Hezbollah have strong support, have also been badly hit by airstrikes.
However Israel's relentless bombing of Lebanon has so far failed to force the release of the two soldiers or halt the daily barrage of Hezbollah rockets into northern Israeli towns.
