The Marne starts in the Langres plateau, runs generally north then bends west between Saint-Dizier and Châlons-en-Champagne, joining the Seine at Charenton just upstream from Paris.
In the Champagne région, part of the water is led through the artificial lake Lac du Der-Chantecoq, in order to regulate the water discharge. This way, large inundations or low river levels downstream are prevented.
The Celts of Gaul worshipped a goddess known as Dea Matrona ("divine mother goddess") who was associated with the Marne.
The Marne is famous as the site of the eponymous two battles during the First World War. The first battle was a turning point of World War I, fought in 1914. The second battle was fought four years later, in 1918.
During the 19th and 20th centuries the Marne inspired many painters, among whom were:
The Marne's headwaters are around Eden Valley and Springton, and it passes through Cambrai before flowing into the Murray at Wongulla.
In pre-European times, the Ngarrindjeripeople used the Marne Valley as a route up into the hills to trade with the Peramangk people in the Barossa Valley and to cut barkcanoes from the River Red Gums in the hills which had thicker bark than those near the Murray. The original name of the Marne River was Taingappa, meaning footrack-trading road.
The Champagne vineyards producing the world-famous sparkling wine are located within Marne.
History
Marne is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from the province of Champagne.
Marne has a long association with the French Army. The training ground of the Camp Militaire de Mailly straddles the border with the département of Aube in the south while that of the Camp de Mourmelon occupies a large area north of Châlons-en-Champagne. The smaller Camp de Moronvilliers lies to the east of Reims and the Camp Militaire de Suippes lies to the east of that. These are all on the chalk of the Champagne plateau, a feature comparable in geology but not size, with the British military training ground on Salisbury Plain.

World War One - Battle of the Marne - In 90 Seconds
The Battle of the Marne was the first major encounter of Franco-British and German troops and shaped the course of the rest of the conflict. Both sides dug trenches which extended across the Western Front and for the next four years they struggled to break the stalemate it created. It also put an end to German's Schlieffen Plan to defeat France and Britain in 40 days. Find out about the build up to the battle and the outcome in 90 seconds.

One Amazing ww1 Memorial by the river Marne
In our trip to Chateau Thierry, we came across this.
One of many WW1 Memorials across the Marne region.
This amazing one, was dedicated to the American troops, that fought on the region. It stands tall and pround with an amazing view over the river Marne.
We had little info about the war that happend 100 years ago, so we went looking for more.
And WOW. You can almost feel what all those men, went through, during the war.
There are still weapons and shell holes across the land.
Hope you all enjoy.
