Maritime security is concerned with the prevention of intentional damage through sabotage, subversion, or terrorism. Maritime security is one of the three basic roles of the United States Coast Guard has gradually developed in response to a series of catastrophic events, which began in 1917.
There are three main maritime security activities conducted by the Coast Guard:
The principle laws that support this mission of the United States Coast Guard are:
Espionage Act of 1917 - This act empowered the Coast Guard to make regulations to prevent damage to harbors and vessels during national security emergencies.
Magnuson Act, 1950 - Enacted as a result of the "Red Scare," this act provided permanent port security regulations, and broad powers to search vessels in U.S. waters and control the movement of foreign vessels in U.S. ports.
Ports and Waterways Safety Act, 1972 – Resulting from several major groundings and oil spills, this act provided port safety authority beyond the Magnuson Act to protect the use of port transportation facilities, and to enhance efforts against the degradation of the marine environment.
1215 Working With Maritime Security Guards - Trailer
As part of their anti piracy measures, many shipping companies now employ armed security guards aboard vessels that transit pirate waters. However, there are legal and safety risks associated with the use of armed guards, and it is vital to choose a Private Maritime Security Company (PMSC) that offers highly competent and professionally trained guards who have experience in protecting ships against pirate attacks. WORKING WITH MARITIME SECURITY GUARDS is intended to give shipping companies and personnel on board ship useful guidance on how to engage and work successfully with armed guards, from selecting the PMSC through to the guards' disembarkation at the end of their deployment. It is a companion programme to Videotel's PIRACY AND ARMED ROBBERY, EDITION 3, which deals with piracy preven...

ISO28007 Maritime security
As I continue this current audit trip, I thought I would upload a short video while auditing off the coast of Oman.
This particular audit is on ISO28007 and ISO28000. The message is that maritime security has some uniques difficulties due to the lack of support - in essence, planning and liaison must be really tied down to best ensure a robust response post incident.
If you are new to security, it would be worth while taking a look at the maritime security industry as it offers some interesting areas to study ... citadels ... PCASPS ... ISO28007 ... Ship Security Assessments and Ship Security Plans ... to name but a few.
On a separate note, hat's off to all those sea farers who spend a lot of life away from family and friends. Kudos.
Thanks for watching if you do, Andy
