Manurewa Intermediate School started in 1961 and was officially opened in 1962.
Culture
The school draws from a large range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. This has led to the formation of several cultural groups within the school, notably:
Manurewa Intermediate also has a Morning Live school News, called MITV. It has useful information for students at the school (for example: fitness and trips). It is hosted by two students.
Manurewa is Māori for "drifting kite". The name refers to a kite flying competition where a kite line was severed and drifted away. The kite's owner was the chief Tamapahore who had a pā (fortified village) on Matuku-tururu (Wiri Mountain). The name Manurewa commemorates the incident by the name Te manu rewa o Tamapahore – The drifting kite of Tamapahore.
Manurewa has a high proportion of non-European ethnicities, making it one of the most multi-cultural suburbs in New Zealand. Employment for many is at the many companies of nearby Wiri, Papakura, and at the steel mill at Glenbrook.
Manurewa AFC was formed by the merger of Tramways (1929 Chatham Cup winner) and another club named Manurewa. The merged entity initially used the portmanteau name of Tramurewa, during which time the club won the 1931 Chatham Cup. Tramuwera reverted to the name of Manurewa in 1959, the name currently used by the club. The club has recently enjoyed the success of being promoted into the Lotto Sport Italia NRFL Division 1A.
In boundary changes in 2002, some areas moved to Clevedon and Manukau East electorates. In the 2007 boundary review, Wattle Downs and parts of Manurewa East moved to Papakura electorate. Boundary changes for the 2008 election made Manurewa even safer for Labour, although some party loyalists were apparently upset that this had the effect of making the neighbouring seat of Papakura less marginal and more inclined towards National.
The 2013/14 redistribution did not change the boundaries further.
History
Manurewa is generally regarded as a safe Labour seat. Louisa Wall won the Manurewa electorate in the 2011 election and was returned to the 50th New Zealand Parliament; she had opted not to be on Labour's party list that time. She was back on the list (in position 12) for the 2014 election but won her electorate comfortably.
A wide range of resources and activities form the sustainability programme at Manurewa Intermediate. Starting with a greenhouse built from recycled plastics, adding pigs to reduce food waste, the school now has chickens and is planning for goats.
Food technology classes use produce from the gardens and animals, while their Sustainable Enterprise classes, deepen learning for their tamariki with research, planning and business development.
Eco Councillors keep a focus on recycling around the school, which has recently won an Enviroschools Green-Gold Award.
