STORYLINE:
A suicide car bomber targeting a Baghdad gas station killed two people on Thursday, a day after dozens died across the country as the US president insisted American troops must stay in Iraq until the job is done.
The suicide car bomb exploded at a gas station in the Mashtal area in eastern Baghdad, killing a woman and a man and wounding 13 people, a police spokesman said.
He said US forces took three of the wounded to their nearby base because their injuries were severe.
The others were taken to a local hospital.
One of the injured men, while describing his ordeal, said he didn't know whether the blast had targeted police in the area.
Due to a severe fuel shortage, lines of cars at Baghdad gas stations often stretch for several kilometres, and drivers sometimes have to wait overnight to fill their cars.
Also on Thursday, a roadside bomb exploded in the upscale Mansour neighbourhood, next to a convoy of SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles) often used by foreign contractors.
Five people including three children were wounded in the blast which also damaged a civilian car, police said.
The blast scene houses several governmental institutions and embassies.
Iraqi police immediately cordoned off the area fearing further attacks.
Despite the continuing bloodshed, US authorities have expressed optimism that Iraqi forces will be ready to assume control of security operations with little coalition support within 18 months.

STORYLINE:
A series of bombings Friday have rocked central Iraq, killing several policemen and civilians.
An IED (improvised explosive device) missed a US convoy and hit two civilians cars, killing three people and injuring two, according to an eyewitness.
In Hilla, 100 km south of Baghdad, a suicide bomber exploded himself amid a group of policemen, killing 4 policemen and injuring four.
Another bomb exploded near a US convoy at 9:30 local time (0530 GMT) in the western al-Mansour district of Baghdad, witnesses said. A damaged Humvee could be scene in the area, which was sealed off by US forces.
Six civilians injured in the blast were treated at the Yarmouk Hospital.
The latest attacks represent a renewed upsurge in violence. On Thursday, twin car bombs killed 18 people (including a Kurdish TV crew) Al Jadiriyah, Baghdad, the highest death toll from an explosion in Iraq in over a month.
Explosions also shook Baghdad after dark on Thursday, police said. The blasts appeared to have been caused by mortar rounds or rockets that landed near the city's Technology University.
On person was killed and four injured in Hay al Wihdah, central Baghdad, when a private house was hit during the attack.

Insurgents exploded three roadside bombs Friday in the Iraqi capital, killing at least one civilian and wounding eight others, officials said.
One bomb exploded near a US convoy at 9:30 local time (0530 GMT) in the western al-Mansour district, witnesses said. A damaged Humvee could be scene in the area, which was sealed off by US forces.
Six civilians injured in the blast were treated at the Yarmouk Hospital.
Another device exploded in an eastern neighbourhood where US forces were also on patrol, killing one civilian and wounding three others, said a police official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
A third blast didn't appear to cause any injuries, according to police.
The US military confirmed the trio of attacks, but had no further information.
The latest attacks represent a renewed upsurge in violence. On Thursday, twin car bombs killed 18 people in Baghdad, the highest death toll from an explosion in Iraq in over a month.
Explosions also shook Baghdad after dark on Thursday, police said. The blasts appeared to have been caused by mortar rounds or rockets that landed near the city's Technology University.
At least four people were wounded when a private house was hit.
A main market in the city also went up in flames late on Thursday, but officials said on Friday they didn't believe foul play was behind the inferno that engulfed al-Shurja market.
Reports of daily gun battles and explosions had died down in mid-March, and the Iraqi and US governments declared the lull a sign that their fighters were winning the battle against the insurgency. But militants have stepped up assaults this month.

STORYLINE
A huge car bomb exploded outside a popular restaurant in Baghdad's prosperous Mansour area on Monday night.
Hospital officials reported at least two people were killed and 17 were wounded.
Dr. Muhanad Jawad of Yarmouk Hospital said most of the victims were women.
Jawad said three people were treated for minor wounds, but that 14 others remained in hospital.
It was not immediately known how serious their injuries were.
The last major car bombing in the Iraqi capital was on Thursday, when a black BMW exploded as a convoy carrying U.S. security contractors drove past.
That blast, near the heavily fortified Sadir Hotel where the security men lived, sent a huge plume of smoke into the sky in Baghdad's busy Karradah district, a main shopping and commercial district.
Three passers-by were injured.
