Manchester University Press is the university press of the University of Manchester, England and a publisher of academic books and journals. Manchester University Press has developed into an international publisher. It maintains its links with the University.
Publishing
Manchester University Press publishes monographs and textbooks for academic teaching in higher education. It produces around 140 new books annually. It also publishes 6 journals.
Areas of expertise are history, politics and international law, literature and theatre studies, and visual culture.
MUP books are marketed and distributed by Oxford University Press, in the United States and Canada, and in Australia by Footprint Books: all other global territories are covered from Manchester itself.
Open access
MUP has been actively involved in open access publishing for several years. It is one of thirteen publishers to participate in the Knowledge Unlatched pilot, a global library consortium approach to funding open access books.
A university press is an academic publishing house specializing in academic monographs and scholarly journals. Most are nonprofit and an integral component of a large research university. They publish work that has been reviewed by scholars in the field. They produce mainly scholarly works, but also often have "popular" titles, such as books on religion or on regional topics. Because scholarly books are mostly unprofitable, university presses may also publish textbooks and reference works, which tend to have larger audiences and sell more copies. Most university presses operate at a loss and are subsidized by their owners; others are required to break even. Demand has fallen as library budgets are cut and the online sales of used books undercut the new book market. Many presses are experimenting with electronic publishing.
Gill is a publisher based in Park West, Dublin, Ireland, and is a publisher of educational and non-fiction in Ireland. It is a member of CLE, the Irish Book Publishers' Association.
History
In 1856, Michael Henry Gill, printer for Dublin University, purchased the publishing and bookselling business of James McGlashan, and the company was renamed McGlashan & Gill. In 1875, it was renamed M.H. Gill & Son. In 1968, the company became associated with the London based Macmillan Publishers (founded 1843) and Gill & Macmillan was established.
Products
Gill mainly publishes educational books for school and college students. They also publish a range of general interest fiction and non-fiction titles including the annual best-seller Money Doctor finance guides.
As well as handling its own published titles, Gill also handles the warehousing and distribution for a number of Irish-based publishers, including O'Brien Press.
Gill also runs eTest.ie, an online learning resource aimed at Irish second-level students. They also have a series of online tests designed to accompany many of their educational books, covering a growing list of secondary school subjects.
The University Press, also commonly referred to as the UP, is the student-run magazine of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida, USA. The magazine is published semimonthly during the summer and weekly during the fall and spring semesters. The current editor-in-chief is Emily Bloch. Dan Sweeney served as adviser to the magazine until the end of Spring 2014. Former adviser Michael Koretzky continues to advise the paper on a volunteer basis.
History
The UP in its current form was established in 1998 after being shut down for a period of nine months. It restarted up as a broadsheet but since has changed its format to a tabloid or magazine sized paper.
The University Press and FAU's Student Government have clashed a number of times in recent years. In 2004, the Student Government tried to lock the paper's staff out of their offices, cut their funding, and fire their adviser. This resulted from claims that UP staff were not conducting their required office hours. The UP countered that the Student Government was instead retaliating following a story that the Student Government's leaders gave themselves a 25%, 6-month retroactive pay raise without public comment. The situation was resolved after the University Press' adviser received a letter of reprimand from the Student Government.
The University of Manchester (UoM) is a publicresearch university in the city of Manchester, England, formed in 2004 by the merger of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (est. 1956) which had its ultimate origins in the Mechanics' Institute established in the city in 1824 and the Victoria University of Manchester founded by charter in 1904 after the dissolution of the federal Victoria University (which also had members in Leeds and Liverpool), but originating in Owens College, founded in Manchester in 1851. Manchester is a member of the worldwide Universities Research Association, the Russell Group of British research universities and the N8 Group. The University of Manchester is regarded as a red brick university, and was a product of the civic university movement of the late 19th century. It formed a constituent part of the federal Victoria University between 1880, when it received its royal charter, and 1903–1904, when it was dissolved.
Manchester University (formerly Manchester College) is a liberal arts university with a campus located in North Manchester, Indiana, and a second campus in Fort Wayne, Indiana, home to the University's College of Pharmacy. Total enrollment is approximately 1,500 students.
History
Manchester University (formerly Manchester College) was founded in Roanoke, Indiana, as the Roanoke Classical Seminary in 1860 by the United Brethren Church. David N. Howe served as the last president of Roanoke Classical Seminary, which was moved to North Manchester to become North Manchester [Manchester] College. He served as Manchester College's first president from 1889–1894 and is known as the founder. The school was renamed Manchester College in 1889 when it moved to North Manchester. In 1932, Manchester merged with Mount Morris College of Mount Morris, Illinois, a Methodist seminary founded in 1839. Manchester is a college of the Church of the Brethren.
The Peace Studies Institute and Program for Conflict Resolution—the first undergraduate peace studies major in the U.S., was established at Manchester in 1948. The program was chaired by Kenneth Brown from 1980 until 2005.
Manchester was settled by colonists around 1672 as a farming community, although at the time it was known just as Orford Parish (the name that can be found on the memorial to the Revolutionary soldiers from the town). The many rivers and brooks provided power for paper, lumber and textile industries, and the town quickly evolved into an industrial center. The town of Hartford once included the land now occupied by the towns of Manchester, East Hartford, and West Hartford. In 1783, East Hartford became a separate town, which included Manchester in its city limits until 1823.
The Pitkin Glassworks operated from 1783-1830 as the first successful glassworks in Connecticut. The Pitkin Glassworks Ruin have been preserved by a historical society.
