The Hillsboro Main Street Bridge is a tied concrete arch bridge located in Hillsboro, Oregon. The bridge carries light rail traffic on the MAX Blue Line over Main Street and 18th Street. Completed in 1997, the 425-foot (130m) long bridge was built with a 78-foot (24m) tall arch in the center. It is located between the 12th Avenue Station and the Fair Complex Station.
Design
The bridge is a post-tension box girder structure with the center pier as an arch support straddling the road. Used in lieu of a center support, the arch is 110 feet (34m) wide and 75 feet (23m) tall. Six cables measuring four inches (102mm) in diameter run from the arch to the main structure of the bridge at the center. The two ends of the reinforced concrete arch are connected to each other underground using a post-tension tie beam, making the structure a tied arch.
The Main Street Bridge in Columbus, Ohio is a 700ft (210m), three-span, inclined arch suspension bridge over the Scioto River. The bridge is the first in North America and the fifth in the world to use an inclined single-rib-tied arch superstructure. The final cost for the bridge was $60.1 million.
History
The original Main Street bridge was a multiple-span, art-deco open-spandrel concrete deck arch bridge, built in 1937. After years of degradation due to weather and traffic, the bridge was deemed unfit for use and closed in 2002.
Wanting an iconic structure to replace the old bridge, the city of Columbus contracted Dr. Spiro Pollalis, professor of design technology and management at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design to design the bridge. His design, altered slightly for budget reasons, opened for traffic on July 30, 2010.
When the former bridge closed, engineers estimated that a replacement would cost approximately $19.5 million. However by 2004, estimates climbed $29.5 million. When planners received construction bids in 2006, the lowest was $44.1 million. Cost overruns, design changes and inspections added another $10 million to the structure's final cost.
Paul Smith's Electric Light and Power and Railroad Company Complex
Paul Smith's Electric Light and Power and Railroad Company Complex is a national historic district located at Saranac Lake in Franklin County, New York. It contains two contributing buildings (a powerhouse and an office building) and two contributing structures (a dam and a bridge). The powerhouse was built in 1908-1909 and is a one story, single room brick building on a stone foundation measuring 40 feet by 55 feet. The office building was built in 1927 and is a three story steel and masonry building with a terra cotta exterior. It is three bays wide by four bays deep. The Main Street Bridge is a concrete slab bridge built between 1924 and 1931. The Lake Flower Dam and Power Flume was built between 1936 and 1938 with Works Progress Administration assistance.
Main Street is a generic phrase used to denote a primary retail street of a village, town or small city in many parts of the world. It is usually a focal point for shops and retailers in the central business district, and is most often used in reference to retailing and socializing.
The term is commonly used in Ireland, Scotland, the United States, Canada, and less often in Australia and New Zealand. In most of the United Kingdom the common description is High Street. However, the term "Main Street" is sometimes used in the UK, for instance, in the village of Sutton Cheney. In Jamaica the term is Front Street. In some parts of the south west of England the equivalent used is Fore Street.
In some larger cities, there may be several Main Streets, each relating to a specific neighborhood or formerly separate city, rather than the city as a whole. In many larger U.S. cities "Main Street" is a U.S. Highway; "Main Street of America" branding was used to promote U.S. Route 66 in its heyday.
Main Street is a children's novel series by Ann M. Martin aiming at age group 8–12. The story revolves around two sisters, Ruby and Flora Northrop, who move to the small town Camden Falls to live with their grandmother after the sudden death of their parents. The books tell us about the girls' new journey and adaptation in a new town and new people with old memories, and some with rather dubious ones. There, they make new friends like Olivia and Nikki. Olivia's grandmother owns a store with Ruby's and Flora's grandmother.
After completing the Baby-Sitters Club series, Ann M. Martin began the Main Street series. She has stated in one of her interviews that she always liked writing about small towns and this made writing the Main Street series even more interesting. The books have at one point or another talked about almost everyone and all shops in the town. According to Martin, she had to create a whole new imaginary town which was very enjoyable. Each book has a detailed map of the town.
Carol Milford is a liberal, free-spirited young woman, reared in Saint Paul, Minnesota, the state capital. She marries Will Kennicott, a doctor, who is a small-town boy at heart.
When they marry, Will convinces her to live in his home-town of Gopher Prairie, Minnesota (a town modeled on Sauk Centre, Minnesota, the author's birthplace). Carol is appalled at the backwardness of Gopher Prairie. But her disdain for the town's physical ugliness and smug conservatism compels her to reform it.
She speaks with its members about progressive changes, joins women's clubs, distributes literature, and holds parties to liven up Gopher Prairie's inhabitants. Despite her friendly but ineffective efforts, she is constantly derided by the leading cliques.
She finds comfort and companionship outside her social class. These companions are taken from her one by one.
In her unhappiness, Carol leaves her husband and moves for a time to Washington, D.C., but she eventually returns. Nevertheless, Carol does not feel defeated:

Construction of the Main Street Bridge began in 1938 at a cost of $1.5 million by the Mount Vernon Bridge Company. It was a War Department permitted in 1936 prior to World War II. The Main Street Bridge took three years to be built and had a dedication ceremony on July 17, 1941. The bridge was built as a vertical lift bridge with use of trusses in order to lift up to accommodate ships passing underneath it. The official name of the bridge, John T. Alsop Jr. Bridge, was dedicated in 1957 to former mayor of Jacksonville John T. Alsop. The bridge carries traffic to and from San Marco, Southbank, Downtown Jacksonville and Interstate 95. In 2014 the Main Street Bridge underwent an $11 million renovation to upgrade metal barriers and patch sidewalks.
With other nearby bridges having been rebuilt as fixed spans by around the end of the 20th century, the Main Street Bride is now the only remaining moveable bridge carrying automobile traffic across the St. Johns river in the Jacksonville area. Of the eight vehicle crossings in the region, four (Shands, Fuller Warren, Acosta and Main St.) had included movable spans when they initially opened.

Catch me a shooting star, I need to hear some good news, Streetlight keeps calling me, into the shadows with you, I'll lie awake 'til, sweet morning breaks in my heart, I'll lie and wonder when lightning and thunder will pass, So I'm leaving coherent thoughts behind, I'm counting the hours, 'til I'm by your side, And I don't wanna feel, this weight on my shoulders, I'm hoping it ain't hopeless. Meet me at the parking lot, and we can both drive to the moon, You can be dynamite, and honey, I'll be the fuse, I'll lie awake 'til you fall asleep in my arms, One parting kiss and I'm already missing you now. So I'm leaving coherent thoughts behind, I'm counting the hours, 'til I'm by your side, And I don't wanna feel, this weight on my shoulders, I'm hoping it ain't hopeless.
