How To Make Chain Mail
Once an essential component of a medieval warrior’s armour, chain mail or rather 'maille' was a treasured and expensive possession, passed down through generations. Today, it remains a coveted costume piece among the historic reenactors who continue to wear it into battle. But have you ever wondered how it is created? We joined traditional maille makers Nick Checksfield and Mark Hale to reveal the skills and process of making a full coat of maille, which can have around 2.8 kilometers of wire within it and take up to a year to create.

ARROWS vs ARMOUR 2 - Does mail stop arrows?
‘Arrows vs Armour’ is back and we are shooting medieval war arrows at the top half of an armoured knight using armour and arrows that are correct in every detail. The main film shows exactly what happened to the armour and the arrows.
Of course we think of a knight wearing plate armour, but much of his defences made use of mail armour so we need to investigate how this works.
Modern made replica mail of the best quality, a quality as good as the medieval mail is prohibitively expensive for our project. We could afford the aventail and the front of the standard collar in this material, but the cost of a shirt was beyond us. So here we set up a comparative test shooting against the best quality hand made mail and a sample of commercially made mail to see how they differ and use the re...

Fantasy Mail Coifs are Stupid, and This is Why...
Good old flimsy butted "chainmail" worn directly on the scalp... what could go wrong? Well...
Let's go a little less silly and find out how well riveted mail over a padded cap protects against sword strikes. Would it just rattle your noggin a little or cause some less... tolerable results?
For battles your character wants to partake in, be it historically inspired fiction or realistic fantasy, theymight want to invest in a helmet, even if it's just a Cervelliere (simple, low-profile skull cap). Just sayin'. :)

I made my first proper metal mail when I was fifteen or so. I wound galvanised garden fence wire around a dowel and cut it with a hacksaw. It took ages. Later, in my school metalwork room, I used a lathe to wind coils around a steel rod. That saved time. Here, I talk of making (butted) mail with pre-made links.

Mail Armour: Where To Buy It. My Favourite Sites
Mail is a type of armour consisting of small metal rings linked together in a pattern to form a mesh.
The earliest example of surviving mail was found in a chieftain's burial located in Ciumești, Romania.
Mail continues to be used in the 21st century as a component of stab-resistant body armour, cut-resistant gloves for butchers and woodworkers, shark-resistant wetsuits for defense against shark bites, and a number of other applications.
The first attestations of the word mail are in Old French and Anglo-Norman: maille, maile, or male or other variants, which became mailye, maille, maile, male, or meile in Middle English.
Civilizations that used mail invented specific terms for each garment made from it.
The use of mail as battlefield armour was common during the Iron Age and the Middle Ag...

Arms & Armor 12th Century Spear VS. Riveted Mail and Ballistic Gel
The spear used in this test: http://ww4.aitsafe.com/go.htm?go=kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AA146&name=Arms+%26+Armor+12th+Century+Spear&afid=28632&tm=14&im=1
The synthetic gel I use: http://amzn.to/2yIplp5
The maille hauberk (often colloquially called chainmail) was sent in by an anonymous viewer, and I don't know who made it or what material it is (although most likely mild steel). The ring thickness is 0.67mm and the outer diameter is 12.9mm.
I was not able to fit a gambeson underneath, as the mail shirt itself was already almost too tight to fit over the shoulders of the gel torso.
Riveted mail is quite resistant, especially to cuts. Much more authentic than cheap butted mail (made from bent rings that have a small gap left in them).

An armour (spelled armor in the US) is a protective covering that is used to prevent damage from being inflicted to an object, individual, or vehicle by weapons or projectiles, usually during combat, or from damage caused by a potentially dangerous environment or action.
The word "armour" began to appear in the Middle Ages as a derivative of Old French. It is dated from 1297 as a "mail, defensive covering worn in combat". The word originates from the Old French armure, itself derived from the Latin armatura meaning "arms and/or equipment", with the root armare meaning "arms or gear".
Armour has been used throughout recorded history. It has been made from a variety of materials, beginning with rudimentary leather protection and evolving through mail and metal plate into today's modern composites.
Significant factors in the development of armour include the economic and technological necessities of its production. For instance, plate armour first appeared in Medieval Europe when water-powered trip hammers made the formation of plates faster and cheaper.
Well-known armour types in European history include the lorica hamata, lorica squamata, and the lorica segmentata of the Roman legions, the mail hauberk of the early medieval age, and the full steel plate harness worn by later medieval and renaissance knights, and breast and back plates worn by heavy cavalry in several European countries until the first year of World War I (1914–15). The samurai warriors of feudal Japan utilised many types of armour for hundreds of years up to the 19th century.

Modern made replica mail of the best quality, a quality as good as the medieval mail is prohibitively expensive for our project. We could afford the aventail and the front of the standard collar in this material, but the cost of a shirt was beyond us. So here we set up a comparative test shooting against the best quality hand made mail and a sample of commercially made mail to see how they differ and use the results to help inform our discussions.
We have also put together a website hosting all the films, documents, supplier contacts and biographies for this series of films https://todtodeschini.com/youtube-projects/arrows-v-armour-2/

The use of mail as battlefield armour was common during the Iron Age and the Middle Ages, becoming less common over the course of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Arms & Armor 12th Century Spear VS. Riveted Mail and Ballistic Gel
