In a virtual reveal keeping with the year's theme of innovation, Mail & Guardian’s Athandiwe Saba and eNCA’s Thembekile Mrototo share the names of 200 winners, plus eight awarded a place in this year's special category, Frontliners, highlighting heroes of the response to Covid-19.

Mail & Guardian’s annual feature of eminent 200 Young South Africans has become a hallmark of our calendar: one of the most popular editions during the year, with significance far beyond our newsroom. Since 2006, we’ve annually featured young South Africans on course to touch the world with their greatness – not an award as much as a mark of distinction. This directory of future leaders has included the likes of Julius Male...

Mail & Guardian Online Launch
Size does matter when it comes to making an impact, which is why Mail & Guardian Online chose Johannesburg's largest LED screen, at 122m2, to launch its new website in high definition. While reinforcing its positioning as Africa's largest news website, M&G targeted engaged in real time with its target audience at the busy commuter node of Sandton's Gautrain Station. By merging the physical and digital worlds, we made it social.
M&G representatives were on-site to engage with passers-by, enabling them to navigate the new website on a tablet device and view their favourite article in real time on the large format LED screen. Using high powered wireless antennas, custom built remote control software was employed to give the user the ability to control the website displayed on the big screen....

The M&G is our mothership. Bhekisisa started off as the publication’s health desk in 2013. In July 2019, we became an independent outfit — but still provided them with health content. The M&G’s deputy editor, Athandiwe Saba, says her publication continues to publish our content because we’re a trusted source and our stories hugely contribute towards upholding South Africa’s democracy.

The project persists in showcasing young leaders, celebrating their work, and shifting the image of our youth to understand them as key to the success of South Africa, and proving our assertion that this is not just any list, after all — it’s THE list.

Size does matter when it comes to making an impact, which is why Mail & Guardian Online chose Johannesburg's largest LED screen, at 122m2, to launch its new website in high definition. While reinforcing its positioning as Africa's largest news website, M&G targeted engaged in real time with its target audience at the busy commuter node of Sandton's Gautrain Station. By merging the physical and digital worlds, we made it social.
M&G representatives were on-site to engage with passers-by, enabling them to navigate the new website on a tablet device and view their favourite article in real time on the large format LED screen. Using high powered wireless antennas, custom built remote control software was employed to give the user the ability to control the website displayed on the big screen. This was done directly from the tablet in real time, as if they were searching on the big screen itself. This gave the user the powerful feeling that they were in control of what was viewed on the LED screen.
The campaign ran over five days, with an average of 36 people interacting with the brand per three-hour activation. The average engagement time per user was five minutes. Within three hours the #NewMG hash tag was tweeted 422 times. Both hashtags M&G and NewMG were the hottest emerging topics on Twitter, "trending" in Johannesburg. The brand reached 66 809 Twitter accounts, with 113 373 impressions.
