The original Maidstone United was an Englishfootball club from Maidstone, Kent, which existed from 1897 to 1992. The club played in the Football League Fourth Division from 1989 until their demise in 1992. During their time in the Football League Maidstone played their games at Dartford'sWatling Street ground. The club also played in various amateur leagues and the Southern League, which was major semi-professional league in southern England until the formation of the Alliance Premier League (a national league now known as the Conference National) in 1979.
History
Maidstone United was formed in 1897 and played in amateur leagues such as the Corinthian, Athenian and the Isthmian League. They joined the Southern League, the major semi-professional league in southern England, in 1971/1972. Their first season as a semi-professional outfit almost brought instant success as the team finished third in the Southern League Division 1 (South), just failing to win promotion behind Waterlooville and Ramsgate. Attendances were much improved from the amateur days with local derbies against Tonbridge and Gravesend & Northfleet drawing respectable attendances of more than 2000. The following season Maidstone finished top and were promoted to the Southern League Premier Division. They continued to progress and during their six-year spell in the league they finished in the top five on four occasions. In 1979 they became founder members of the Alliance Premier League (now the Football Conference), and won the league title twice, in 1984 and 1989.
The current club filled the void left by the old Maidstone United, which was a member of The Football League between 1989 and 1992. That club was forced out of the league through bankruptcy but the nucleus of a new club was built around the youth squad. Maidstone Invicta were originally a youth team but made the step up to adult football in 1992 being elected to the Kent County League Fourth Division in 1993 and subsequently progressed through the non-league pyramid. They changed their name to Maidstone United in 1995. They played in the Isthmian League Premier Division from 2013 having been promoted from the Isthmian League Division One South and won the league in the 2014–15 season to gain promotion to the National League South (formerly the Conference South) for the 2015–16 season.
Maidstone were without a stadium of their own from their creation until 2012 when the Gallagher Stadium, located near Maidstone town centre, was opened at the start of the 2012–13 season.
Maidstone is the county town of Kent, England, 32 miles (51km) south-east of London. The River Medway runs through the centre of the town, linking it with Rochester and the Thames Estuary. Historically, the river was a source and route for much of the town's trade as the centre of the agricultural county of Kent, known as the Garden of England. There is evidence of a settlement in the area dating back to beyond the Stone Age.
The town is in the borough of Maidstone. In 2011, the town had a population of 113,137, about 73 per cent of the population of the borough.
Maidstone's economy has changed over the years from being involved in heavy industry, to more light industry and service industries.
Toponymy
Saxon charters (c975) show the first recorded instances of the town's name, de maeides stana and maegdan stane, possibly meaning stone of the maidens or stone of the people. The latter meaning may refer to the nearby megalith around which gatherings took place. The name evolved through medestan/meddestane in the Domesday Book with possible variation Mayndenstan, in 1396. The modern name appeared by 1610. It has been suggested that the name derives from stones set into the river to allow clothes to be rinsed in the cleaner water away from the banks.
The parliamentary borough of Maidstone returned two Members of Parliament (MPs) from 1552 until 1885, when its representation was reduced to one member. The borough was abolished in 1918 and replaced with a county division of the same name, which was abolished for the 1997 general election, and partially replaced by the new Maidstone and The Weald constituency.
History
Before the 19th century
Maidstone was first enfranchised as a parliamentary borough, electing two Members of Parliament, in 1552; at the time it was one of the largest English towns not already represented, and was one of a number of boroughs either enfranchised or re-enfranchised during the reign of Edward VI. However, barely had it won the right than its charter was cancelled after the accession of Mary I as a punishment for the town's part in Wyatt's Rebellion. This was the only recorded instance of a borough's right to return MPs being directly revoked until Grampound was disfranchised for corruption in the 1820s (although there were other cases of temporary suspension or of the right lapsing through disuse in medieval times, when representation was less valued).

Let's discover the best of Historic Maidstone in Kent
Discovering Kent's county town through the eyes of a tourist with an interest in its history.
We start by the college of All Saints, and loop back via the Hermitage Millennium Amphitheatre. After crossing the Lockmeadow Millennium Bridge over the River Medway to visit 'The Stag'.
Crossing back and up the ancient Old College Horseway, we loop around All Saints Church, disappointed it is closed, before heading onto the Archbishop's Palace. Our luck is in when we wander into the Apothecary's Garden.
Nearby, we take in the Tithe Barn that houses the Tyrwhitt-Drake Museum of Carriages before crossing the road to look at the Rootes Building as it undergoes redevelopment. A stroll around the corner we take a look at Drakes and the Martyrs' plaque, remembering those burnt at the stake in 155...

We stroll up Maidstone's High Street & Bank Street, taking in some of the fine buildings that line it. A peek down Gabriel's Hill, we return to Jubilee Square and sneak off along Market Buildings, getting a distinctly French feel at the end.
Onto Earl Street, we catch the Hazlitt Theatre before wandering down towards Corpus Christi Hall, and then across to Fremlin Walk, scooting through to reach St Faith's Street and the Maidstone's Museum & Art Gallery. No time to visit this time, but one for our next visit.
Passing Maidstone's Museum & Art Gallery, we head into a parched Brenchley Gardens before making our way to the Old Session House and County Hall.
We complete the journey by heading past Maidstone East railway station and picking up the towpath next to the River Medway that takes us back to the Archbishop's palace.

A stroll around the corner we take a look at Drakes and the Martyrs' plaque, remembering those burnt at the stake in 1557 for their faith.
Thanks so much for watching, and we'd love to hear from you so please leave a comment and don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss any of our travels: 🟢-
