Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night tells the story of two young people in love confronting a secret. It is music of intense passion, drama and radiant beauty, one of the most Romantic works ever written. Arnold Schoenberg’s first major work, the string sextet Verklärte Nacht, is based on a poem by Richard Dehmel that describes a man and woman out walking on a cold night. The premiere on March 18, 1902 was met with some unfavorable reaction, perhaps attributable to anti-semitism. However, Schoenberg’s work impressed Mahler, who was in the audience that night.

Seesaw is an exploration of how human brains, especially children’s brains, can bounce from idea to idea quickly and effortlessly when not inhibited by
the structures and concerns of our busy adult lives. The melodies bounce around with joyous abandon and then find their way into deeper, more grounded thoughts before returning to the carefree, natural flow of the beginning. Personally, it represents a time in my childhood where every emotion ran its course through my brain with raw intensity. I bounced from thought to thought with reckless abandon and little regard for the rationalizations and maturity of adulthood. ~Karl Mitze

The musical material for silhouette, mirror comes from Lanzilotti’s string orchestra work with eyes the color of time, a finalist for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Music. The title refers to two works of art that were featured in what is now the Honolulu Museum of Art Spalding House when it first opened: Robert Graham’s bronze doors at the museum entrance, which feature silhouettes of women, and
James Seawright’s Mirror XV (1987). ~Leilehua Lanzilotti
