The Incredible Story of the Magellan-Elcano Circumnavigation 1519-1522
September 2022 marks the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the globe by the expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan (Fernando de Magallanes/Fernão de Magalhães), and completed by Juan Sebastian Elcano- and it should be mentioned, a young slave boy by the name of Henry (Enrique) of Malacca. The story of how the spurned Portuguese Captain went to work for the Spanish is full of court intrigue, international espionage, daring exploits and narrow escapes; but also one of tragic blunders, mutiny and betrayal. Underscoring the fierce competition between Spain and Portugal for naval supremacy and a trade monopoly to the Orient is also the drama of East-West confrontation; the demise of Islamic hegemony and the emergence of European global economic & military dominance and a clash of...

Magellan - Yoyoy Villame [Karaoke Version]
One of Pinoy pop novelty music’s biggest personalities was singer-composer and comedian Yoyoy Villame. Alongside “Butsekik,” other gems by the Visayan pop artist include the hilarious song “Magellan” that furthered Novelty music’s place in OPM that opened doors for countless comedians-turned-recording artists.

Ferdinand Magellan is remembered for being the first explorer to launch a voyage that successfully circumnavigated the globe. While Ferdinand Magellan was ultimately killed during the voyage, the first journey to sail around the world was completed by Juan Sebastian Elcano. What was the purpose of Magellan's exploration? Why did Ferdinand Magellan make a voyage around the world? To find a new route to the spice islands for Spain, of course.

Either way, the Orange-white-blue Prinzenvlag would have been more appropriate given the date of the Dutch transit of the passage in 1616. The flag of Luxembourg is similar, but wider.

(Yoyoy Villame /BAMI/ ABS-CBN Film Productions, Inc./Star Songs)
LYRICS:
Magellan
Yoyoy Villame
On March sixteen, fifteen hundred twenty-one
When Philippines was discovered by Magellan
They were sailing day and night, across the big ocean
Until they saw a small Limasawa island
Magellan landed in Limasawa at noon
The people met him very welcome on the shore
They did not understand the speaking they have done
Because Kastila gid at Waray-Waray man
When Magellan landed in Cebu City
Rajah Humabon met him, they were very happy
All people were baptized and built the church of Christ
And that's the beginning of our Catholic life
When Magellan visited in Mactan
To Christianize them everyone
But Lapu-Lapu met him on the shore
And drive Magellan to go back home
Then Magellan got so mad
Ordered his men to camouflage
Mactan island, we could not grab
'Cause Lapu-Lapu is very hard
Then the battle began at dawn
Bolos and spears versus guns and cannons
When Magellan was hit on his neck
He stumbled down and cried and cried
Oh, mother, mother, I am sick
Call the doctor very quick
Doctor, doctor, shall I die
Tell my mama, do not cry
Tell my mama, do not cry
Tell my mama, do not cry
That's the end of Magellan
In the island of Mactan long time ago
