Madama Butterfly (IPA:[maˈdaːma ˈbatterflai]; Madame Butterfly) is an opera in three acts (originally two) by Giacomo Puccini, with an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. The opera is based in part on the short story "Madame Butterfly" (1898) by John Luther Long, which in turn was based partially on stories told to Long by his sister Jennie Correll and partially on the semi-autobiographical 1887 French novel Madame Chrysanthème by Pierre Loti. Long's version was dramatized by David Belasco as a one-act play, Madame Butterfly: A Tragedy of Japan, which, after premiering in New York in 1900, moved on to London, where Puccini saw it in the summer of that year.
The original version of the opera, in two acts, had its premiere on 17 February 1904 at Teatro alla Scala in Milan. It was poorly received, despite such notable singers as soprano Rosina Storchio, tenor Giovanni Zenatello and baritone Giuseppe De Luca in its lead roles; this was due in part to a late completion by Puccini, and thus inadequate time for rehearsals. Puccini revised the opera, splitting Act II into two (with the Humming Chorus as a bridge to what became Act III) and making other changes. Success ensued, starting with the first performance, on 28 May 1904 in Brescia.
Santiago de Cali (Spanish pronunciation:[sanˈtjaɣo ðe ˈkali]), usually known by its short name "Cali", is the capital of the Valle del Cauca department, and the most populous city in Southwestern Colombia, with an estimated 2,319,655 residents according to 2005-2020/DANE population projections. The city spans 560.3km2 (216.3sqmi) with 120.9km2 (46.7sqmi) of urban area, making Cali the third largest city proper and metropolitan area in population and the second largest city by area in the country. As the only major Colombian city with access to the Pacific coast, Cali is the main urban and economic centre in Southwestern Colombia, and is one of the fastest growing economies in the country. Cali is also known as the capital of Salsa music. The city was founded on 25 July 1536 by the Spanish conquistadorSebastián de Belalcázar.

Bruno Caliciuri, better known as Cali, is a French singer-songwriter.
Biography
Cali was born 28 June 1968 in Perpignan, to an Italian father and Catalan mother. He grew up in Vernet-les-Bains. A fan of English rock and French chanson during his youth, Cali was also a keen rugby player. He played for his region and Perpignan (USAP). Inspired by a U2 concert in 1984, Cali devoted himself more to music and less to rugby.
At the age of 17, Cali discovered punk music in Ireland. This was the style of his first group Pénétration anale. His second group was composed of friends from Vernet-les-Bains, and called Les Rebelles. From 25 to 28, Cali self-produced two albums with the band Indy, then was part of Tom Scarlett, where he worked with his past guitarist Hugo Baretge. At the end of 2001, Cali stopped work with Tom record company Labels, which signed him on. At the end of 2003, he released his first well-known solo album L'amour parfait. Regarded as a critical success, the album made him known amongst the premier French artists. Popular songs from the album include "Elle m'a dit", the single "C'est quand le bonheur" and "Pensons à l'avenir".
Kālī (/ˈkɑːli/; Sanskrit:काली;Telugu:కాళీ; Tamil:காளி; Bengali:কালী), also known as Kālikā (Sanskrit:कालिका,Telugu:కాళికా), is the Hindugoddess associated with empowerment, or shakti. She is the mighty aspect of the goddess Durga. The name of Kali means black one andforceof time, she is therefore called the Goddess of Time, Change, Power, Creation, Preservation, and Destruction. Her earliest appearance is that of a destroyer principally of evil forces. Various Shakta Hindu cosmologies, as well as Shākta Tantric beliefs, worship her as the ultimate reality or Brahman; and recent devotional movements re-imagine Kāli as a benevolent mother goddess. She is often portrayed standing or dancing on her consort, the Hindu god Shiva, who lies calm and prostrate beneath her. Kali is worshipped by Hindus throughout India but particularly South India, Bengal, and Assam.
Etymology
Kālī is the feminine form of kālam ("black, dark coloured"). Kāla primarily means "time", but also means "black"; hence, Kālī means "the black one" or "beyond time". Kāli is strongly associated with Shiva, and Shaivas derive the masculine Kāla (an epithet of Shiva) from her feminine name. A nineteenth-century Sanskrit dictionary, the Shabdakalpadrum, states: कालः शिवः। kālaḥ śivaḥ। tasya patnīti kālī - "Shiva is Kāla, thus, his consort is Kāli".

Ermonela Jaho as Cio-Cio San (with Elizabeth DeShong as Suzuki) performs Un bel dí vedremo in Madama Butterfly. Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/
Giacomo Puccini was entranced by David Belasco’s play Madame Butterfly (based on a popular short story by John Luther Long) when he saw it in London in 1900. He collaborated with librettists Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa (with whom he had created La bohème and Tosca) to adapt Cio-Cio-San’s (Butterfly’s) tragic tale for the operatic stage. Although the premiere at La Scala, Milan, in 1904 was poorly received, that same year Puccini revised and restaged the opera for performances in Brescia, to great acclaim. Madama Butterfly quickly became a hugely popular opera with performers and audiences alike, and remains one of Puccini’s best-love...

Madama Butterfly quickly became a hugely popular opera with performers and audiences alike, and remains one of Puccini’s best-loved works.
Puccini drew on Japanese folk melodies for the score, one of his most evocative and atmospheric. In Act I, Cio-Cio-San expresses her radiant happiness in ‘Ancora un passo’, and the lovers rapturously declare their love for each other in the passionate duet ‘Viene la sera… vogliatemi bene’. In Act II, set three years later, the dominant mood is one of yearning; in her Act II aria ‘Un bel dì vedremo’ Cio-Cio-San longs for the ‘fine day’ when her husband will return to her.

Later addition: When my youngest daughter was 8 years old she would hear this opera on the TV in our rec room and drift in and listen to it. She later sat and became absorbed in the beautiful music and so I would add a little background to the story to enhance her understanding and enrich her experience. Now as a young adult she has the ear for opera and will go with us to Seattle Opera every now and then and she is now bringing her children. This is how it's done, isn't it?
My own interest was sparked by the movie "Amadeus" -- later that year I found myself mesmerized by "The Magic Flute" in a recording from a friend. Then, it was after this that I first saw this opera on TV. I watched this opera throughout one full year with almost no other musical interests.
Correction: Joseph Newsome pointed (in a comment -- see below) to the Lyric of Opera's website and our understanding is that my previous dating of this as 1989 was probably wrong and that this comes from the 1985 production. I think what happened is that I originally recorded this in 1989 and so assumed it was from that year but it was probably a re-broadcast. Thanks, Mr. Newsome.

My favorite version of Madama Butterfly. Sorry for the poor video quality but the subtitles are readable and the sound is very good. I recorded this over the air and have watched this VHS tape over 100 times. I went looking for this version on Youtube and couldn't find it so I converted this tape to digital and finally got around to uploading it. If someone knows where a better copy is please inform me.
The Lyric Opera of Chicago's 1985 production of Puccini's opera, set in the late nineteenth century in the city of Nagasaki, about a young Japanese woman who weds an American naval officer who later abandons her and the child she bore him.
Directed by Rodney Greenberg. Produced by David Horn. Stage Production by Harold Prince.
Starring Peter Dvorsky as Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, Anna Tomowa-Sintow as Cio-Cio-San, Richard Stilwell as Sharpless and Elena Zilio as Suzuki.
Thanks, Mr. Newsome.

A movie of Giacomo Puccini's 1905 opera w/english subtitles
The tragic love affair of a naive disillusioned with life Japanese girl and a thoughtless American playboy sailor set to a well thought out story and wonderful music. Madame Butterfly is considered one of the great western operas.
Music composed by Giacomo Puccini, libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. The opera was inspired by the stage play produced by David Belasco which in turn was based on the book written by Philadelphia lawyer John Long.
Recorded at 720 pixel and maximum audio quality.
Puccini's 1896 opera La Boheme makes a good companion to Madame Butterfly, tells the tale of a doomed love between a poet and a seamstress (many consider La Boheme Puccini's greatest opera). An excellent video of it uploaded by Marcktrolo can be found here on YouTube.
This film is distributed by Sony Pictures and remains here at their whim.
