Macarius of Egypt (c. 300 – 391) was an EgyptianChristianmonk and hermit. He is also known as Macarius the Elder, Macarius the Great and The Lamp of the Desert.
Life
Macarius was born in Upper Egypt. A late tradition places his birthplace in the village of Shabsheer (Shanshour), in Al Minufiyah Governorate, Egypt around 300 A.D. At some point before his pursuit of asceticism, Macarius made his living smuggling niter in the vicinity of Nitria, a vocation which taught him how to survive in and travel across the wastes in that area.
St. Macarius is known for his wisdom. His friends and close kin used to call him “Pidar Yougiron” which meant the “old young man” or “the young man with the elders’ wisdom.” At the wish of his parents he entered into marriage, but was soon widowed. Shortly after, his parents departed as well. Macarius subsequently distributed all his money among the poor and needy. He found a teacher in an experienced Elder, who lived in the desert not far from the village. The Elder accepted the youth, guided him in the spiritual science of watchfulness, fasting and prayer, and taught him the handicraft of weaving baskets. Seeing his virtues, the people of his village brought him to the bishop of Ashmoun who ordained him priest.
The spotted flycatcher (Muscicapa striata) is a small passerine bird in the Old World flycatcher family. It breeds in most of Europe and western Asia, and is migratory, wintering in Africa and south western Asia. It is declining in parts of its range.
This is an undistinguished looking bird with long wings and tail. The adults have grey-brown upperparts and whitish underparts, with a streaked crown and breast, giving rise to the bird's common name. The legs are short and black, and the bill is black and has the broad but pointed shape typical of aerial insectivores. Juveniles are browner than adults and have spots on the upperparts.
Behaviour and ecology
Spotted flycatchers hunt from conspicuous perches, making sallies after passing flying insects, and often returning to the same perch. Their upright posture is characteristic.
Spotted flycatchers exhibit an atypical molt strategy, that is they molt their primaries and some of their secondaries in the reverse order from what is seen in most passerines.
There is/has been more than one band called Egypt over the years. This can cause confusion with albums & tracks from different 'Egypts' often listed together as if they were one band. This Egypt (1987 to the present) is best known for its close connections to 1960s/70s band The Groundhogs and, just to add to the confusion, had a very different style and line-up in the early days, making many people believe they were two different bands.
The early years
Egypt's original line-up first got together in a squat in Shepherds Bush, London in late 1987, but the story really begins a few weeks before when ex-Groundhogs bass player Alan Fish and ex-Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker were asked to record the very first album release (literally serial number 001) for the then fledgling record label HTD Records (HTD are now Talking Elephant Records and deal with Wishbone Ash, Fairport Convention, Ritchie Blackmore, Steven Stills, etc.). Also included was guitarist Don Greer (ex-Bachman Turner Overdrive and others).
Egypt is a BBC televisiondocudrama serial portraying events in the history of Egyptology from the 18th through early 20th centuries. It originally aired on Sunday nights at 9pm on BBC1 in 2005. The first two episodes explored the work of Howard Carter and his archaeological quest in Egypt in the early part of the twentieth century. The next two episodes focused on the eccentric explorer "The Great Belzoni". played here by ]Matthew Kelly. The final two episodes dramatise the discovery and deciphering of the Rosetta Stone by Jean-François Champollion (Elliot Cowan).
The music was recorded by the Warsaw Radio Orchestra and is featured on the CD Timeless Histories by Chappell music, produced by Clare Isaacs.
Production
The series was a major new docudrama series produced by the BBC for the Autumn 2005 schedule.
In order to create a sense of "seeing the treasures of Ancient Egypt for the first time", Dolling and Bradshaw felt it essential to film at the actual archaeological sites referenced in the series.

Nesting Spotted Flycatchers | Muscicapa striata | British Birding
In this video I follow nesting Spotted Flycatchers feeding their chicks over a period of eight days watching them grow and fledge. Watch the flycatcher chicks growing up day by day at a remarkable rate and make the parent birds work hard in catching insects to feed them. Spotted Flycatcher, Muscicapa striata, is a small songbird found in Europe and parts of Asia but becoming an increasingly scarce sight in British birding, making watching them nesting a special experience. While Spotted Flycatcher is not a colourful bird it is interesting for its migratory habits and tendency to often nest close to humans.

They have a distinct plumage, featuring pale underparts, a brownish-gray upper body, and conspicuous dark spots on their crown and back.
As its name suggests, the Spotted Flycatcher is an adept flycatcher. It uses its keen eyesight to spot flying insects and then launches into quick flights to capture them mid-air. After catching its prey, it returns to its perch to consume it.

Spotted Flycatchers-Making A Simple Standing Blind- BIG ANNOUNCEMENT
A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to discover a Spotted Flycatcher nesting in the corner of our old polytunnel!! What a result. So we waited and watched and she hatched out all four eggs. This was then a perfect chance to get some close up shots as the parents went about their business feeding their hungry brood. Watch how I explain my method of constructing a simple standing blind to enable me to get some great shots of these beautiful Summer migrants. Also I have a big announcement at the end of the film!!!

The Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata) is a charming and migratory bird species found across Europe and parts of Asia and Africa. Recognizable by its subtle plumage featuring brownish-gray upperparts and pale underparts, adorned with distinct spotting on the breast, this unassuming bird captivates with its understated beauty. Despite its modest appearance, the Spotted Flycatcher possesses remarkable aerial agility, adeptly catching flying insects on the wing from exposed perches such as branches or wires. During the breeding season, it builds cup-shaped nests in sheltered locations, where females lay and incubate their eggs. With its soft, melodious song, the Spotted Flycatcher adds a delightful soundtrack to woodlands, parks, and gardens during the summer months. As a long-distance migrant, it embarks on an epic journey to wintering grounds in sub-Saharan Africa, facing challenges such as habitat loss and climate change along the way. Conservation efforts to protect breeding and stopover habitats are essential for ensuring the continued survival of this beloved bird species, cherished by birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts worldwide for its elegance and grace.

The Spotted Flycatcher is a declining bird in the UK. They are only seen in the UK from May to September and they spend winter in Africa and S Asia.

This video clip was taken along side one of my photographic projects, all clips were taken with a Canon 7D DSLR and a Canon 500mm Lens, high res images can be found at http://www.flickr.com/photos/wildaboutimages/4833173731/

The Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata) is a small passerine bird that belongs to the flycatcher family. These birds are known for their elegant appearance and exceptional hunting skills.

Mike McCarthy, Environment Editor at the Independent and author of Say Goodbye to the Cuckoo, tells us about his love of the Spotted Flycatcher and his deep concern over the losses this aerial acrobat has suffered and how we have to act now to help our migrant birds. Funds from the Out of Africa appeal will do just this. Watch Mikes clip and please help by supporting the Out of Africa appeal.
