Development of MPlayer began in 2000. The original author, Hungarian Árpád Gereöffy, started the project because he was unable to find any satisfactory video players for Linux after XAnim stopped development in 1999. The first version was titled mpg12play v0.1 and was hacked together in a half hour using libmpeg3 from www.heroinewarrior.com. After mpg12play v0.95pre5, the code was merged with an AVI player based on avifile's Win32DLL loader to form MPlayer v0.3 in November 2000.
Gereöffy was soon joined by many other programmers, in the beginning mostly from Hungary, but later worldwide.
How To Play Video From The Terminal In Linux With Mplayer
On Linux, a great way to play video files with the terminal. Going this route means you bypass all of the fancy UI elements in favor of simplicity. Introducing Mplayer, it’s a powerful command-line based video player that you can use to play video from the Terminal. It supports many different media formats, and works very well on computers that are low on RAM. More info https://www.addictivetips.com/ubuntu-linux-tips/play-video-from-the-terminal-linux-mplayer/

Remember This? - Mplayer.com - Early Multiplayer Gaming - Memories from the Past
If your in your mid 20's-40's or older you might remember this piece of software. It was bundled with almost every game in existence from mid nineties to about 2000.
Basically this program was the precursor to what was once Game Spy Arcade. Today it probably would be best compared to Steam or Discord, but with a much more actively chatting community live with webcams, voice and text all in one simple spot. None of the current services today have come quite as close to replicating the simplicity of the features as far as I have seen.
This place I have a lot of fond memories of really, so yes I am biased. Joined my first clan there and played MechWarrior 2 and a number of other great games.
