The M3 Stuart, formally Light Tank M3, is an Americanlight tank of World War II. It was supplied to British and Commonwealth forces under lend-lease prior to the entry of the U.S. into the war. Thereafter, it was used by U.S. and Allied forces until the end of the war.
The name General Stuart or Stuart given by the British comes from the American Civil WarConfederate General J.E.B. Stuart and was used for both the M3 and the derivative M5 Light Tank. In British service, it also had the unofficial nickname of Honey after a tank driver remarked "She's a honey". To the United States Army, the tanks were officially known only as "Light Tank M3" and "Light Tank M5".
The M3 Stuarts were the first American-crewed tanks in World War II to engage the enemy in tank versus tank combat.
Development
Observing events in Europe, American tank designers realized that the Light Tank M2 was becoming obsolete and set about improving it. The upgraded design, with thicker armor, modified suspension and new gun recoil system was called "Light Tank M3". Production of the vehicle started in March 1941 and continued until October 1943. Like its direct predecessor, the M2A4, the M3 was initially armed with a 37mm M5 gun and five .30-06Browning M1919A4 machine guns: coaxial with the gun, on top of the turret in an M20 anti-aircraft mount, in a ball mount in right bow, and in the right and left hull sponsons. Later, the gun was replaced with the slightly longer M6, and the sponson machine guns were removed.
Stuart is a traditionally masculine given name as well as a surname. It is the French form of the surname Stewart. The French form of the surname was brought to Scotland from France by Mary Stuart, in the 16th century. The surname Stewart is an occupational name for the administrative official of an estate. The name is derived from the Middle Englishstiward, and Old Englishstigweard, stiweard. The Old English word is composed of the elements stig, meaning "house(hold)"; and weard, meaning "guardian". In pre-Conquest times, a steward was an officer who controlled the domestic affairs of a household, especially of a royal household. After the Conquest, the term was used as an equivalent of Seneschal, a steward of a manor or estate.
A variant form of the given name and surname is Stewart. Pet forms of the given name are Stu, Stew and Stewie.
The House of Stuart is a European royal house. Founded by Robert II, the House of Stuart—also spelled Stewart in Scottish contexts—first became monarchs of the Kingdom of Scotland during the late 14th century before inheriting the kingdoms of England (including Wales) and Ireland in the 17th century. The dynasty's patrilineal Breton ancestors had held the office of High Steward of Scotland since the 12th century, after arriving by way of Norman England. In 1707, Queen Anne became the first monarch of the newly merged Kingdom of Great Britain. The family also maintained the traditional English claims to the Kingdom of France.

The M2 and M3 - A Light Tank Origin Story
The M3 Stuart was THE allied light tank of World War 2. Good armour, good gun, good mobility, and loved by it's crews. It's development began with the T2, continued into the M2 and culminated in the M3A3, with the vehicle serving for decades on the front lines. And, believe it or not, it's still very much in service somewhere!

The M3 Stuart is all you need
A video with the M3 Stuart has been one of the most heavily requested, and I finally did it. Can't say it wasn't a huge pain. The Tiger and King Tiger are nigh on impossible to destroy with the 37mm. If I do another "M3 is all you need", it'll likely be with several vehicles.

Oh My God, the Stuart Is On Fire (Mild Profanity)
Taken at the Aquino weekend last year, I was brought aside and challenged to get out of an M3. They seemed unconvinced I could do it. As an unofficial video, I wasn't too worried about the language, so watch your speaker volume if your kid is nearby.
Points to note: 1) Unfamiliarity with the fold of the lower hatch slowed me down. 2) Although I would theoretically have been able to risk getting out with the upper hatch on the stand as it was had there been a real fire, I saw no reason to risk damaging myself, and requested help to ensure the support strut was locked in place. 3) I have apparently pioneered a new exit technique. 4) I need to lose weight.
I am sure that one day I will do a proper Inside the Hatch on a Stuart, but this will do for now.
