Degeneracy of Lytton Strachey
Author and champagne socialist Lytton Strachey (1880-1932) engaged in a ménage à trois from 1917 until his death. Strachey's companions were artist Dora Carrington (1893-1932) and writer Ralph Partridge (1894-1960). Existing on the periphery of the Bloomsbury Group, Carrington knew about Strachey's dalliances with boys, including the ward of Peter Pan author J. M. Barrie. Strachey's attitude towards women and his male lovers reveals his cynicism and bitterness. More critically acclaimed today than she was in her life, Carrington shot herself a few months after Strachey's death. She had been abandoned by Partridge, Strachey, had undergone an abortion and would use a gun owned by Guinness brewery owner Hon. Bryan Guinness. On Modern Library's list of 100 Best Non-Fiction books, 'Eminent Victorians' marked an epoch in the art of biography; it also helped to crack the old myths of high Victorianism and to usher in a new spirit by which chauvinism, hypocrisy and the stiff upper lip were debunked. In it, Strachey cleverly exposes the self-seeking ambitions of Cardinal Manning and the manipulative, neurotic Florence Nightingale; and in his essays on Dr Arnold and General Gordon, his quarries are not only his subjects but also the public-school system and the whole structure of nineteenth-century liberal values.

Queen Victoria ,
Giles Lytton STRACHEY (1880 - 1932)
Lytton Strachey’s first great success, and his most famous achievement, was "Eminent Victorians" (1918), a collection of four short biographies of Victorian heroes. With a dry wit, he exposed the human failings of his subjects and what he saw as the hypocrisy at the centre of Victorian morality. This work was followed in the same style by "Queen Victoria" (1921). (Summary from Wikipedia)
Genre(s): Biography & Autobiography, Modern (19th C)

How best can we understand the internal experience of alienation? In both her essays and her fiction, Virginia Woolf shapes the slippery nature of subjective experience into words, while her characters frequently lead inner lives that are deeply at odds with their external existence. Iseult Gillespie helps make sense of these disparities to prepare you for the next time you read Virgina Woolf.

Charleston - Bloomsbury Group Bohemia
Bohemia is not a place - it's a state of mind. A commitment to live with your own sense of values, your own freedom and independence. "An irrational factor that destines a man to emancipate himself from the herd and from its well-worn paths."
This video gives an insight into the values of the Bloomsbury Group (Vanessa Bell, Virginia Woolf, Maynard Keynes, EM Forster, Duncan Grant to name but a few) some of whom lived at Charleston.
They lived and breathed art - whether that be through the medium of painting, sculpting, writing - and they challenged societal norms and the philosophy of materialism. Charleston a simple rented farmhouse near Firle, East Sussex, UK, provided a place to create these various forms of art and live with a freedom not possible in the City. It is impossible to...

"What an unusual power you have, you are no ordinary person", painter Henry Tonks said about his muse and friend Mary Hutchinson (1889-1977). Hutchinson, born Mary Barnes in India, lost her mother very young and adapted well to a bohemian Italian existence with her maternal grandparents. A half-cousin of Lytton Strachey, she fell in among his friends and acquaintances in the Bloomsbury Set. Quickly pounced upon for extramarital affairs by Vita Sackville-West, Maria Huxley and Clive Bell, Hutchinson inspired art and snippy comments alike. She may have been one of the major propelling forces to writer and playwright T.S. Eliot.

It is impossible to capture the old world creative atmosphere of being at Charleston but this video gives some of the feeling of the raw creativity that engulfs you as you enter and walk around.
The narration at the beginning is by David Dimbleby and the interview is between Alain de Botton and Virginia Nicholson (grandaughter of Vanessa Bell) who spent time herself at Charleston when she was a young girl.
The background music is Nuages (Clouds) from Claude Debussy's Nocturnes.
The Three Graces - Elegance, Beauty and Style.
My Philosophy for a sublime way of living.
My aim - to bring a touch of old world grace and discreet glamour to the everyday.
"Having class - it's not half the battle - it's the whole war"
