Lowther is a civil parish in Eden District, Cumbria. Within the parish are the settlements of Lowther Village, Newtown or Lowther Newtown, Hackthorpe, Whale and Melkinthorpe.
The parish council meets at the Lowther Parish Hall in Hackthorpe. Lowther Endowed Primary School is also at Hackthorpe.
Most of the land in the parish belongs to the Lowther family estates. The family seat of the Lowthers was formerly Lowther Castle which is now a ruin but set in spectacular parkland.
Hackthorpe once had its own magistrates court which is now part of the village's pub.
At the time of Domesday Book in 1086, parts of the county were considered either to form part of Yorkshire or to be within the separate Kingdom of Strathclyde. The Normans conquered the area that is now Cumbria in 1092 during the reign of William II and created the baronies of Kendal and Westmorland. These were originally distinct jurisdictions with separate sheriffs, but were formed into a single county of Westmorland in 1226/7. Before 1226 the Barony of Kendal was connected to the Earldom or Honour of Lancaster while that of Westmorland was part of the Earldom of Carlisle.
The most notable incident in the life of the Westmorland occurred shortly after she sailed for Britain from Livorno under Captain Michael Wallace late in 1778, carrying a large monetary payment for her inbound cargo of salt cod from Newfoundland (Livorno was a trade hub for this commodity), food goods, and 57 crates of artistic objects collected by Grand Tourists such as the Duke of Gloucester, Sir John Henderson and the Duke of Norfolk.
In January 1779, she was given chase by four French ships, comprising two men-of-war, the Caton (64) and the Destin (74), and two smaller vessels. Wallace attempted to outsail them but, outgunned as he was, soon felt he had little option but to allow the French to board his ship. She was then allowed by Spain (then friendly with France though not yet— in formal terms at least— at war with Britain) to continue to Malaga.
The constituency had two separate periods of existence.
In the boundary changes in 1983 the southern part of the constituency became part of the new seat of Westmorland and Lonsdale and the northern area was transferred to Penrith and The Border
Boundaries
The 1918 - 1983 seat corresponded to the county of Westmorland even after the abolition of the administrative county in 1974.
Exploring Cumbria - A Look at Lowther Church and Mausoleum
Continuing my explorations of Cumbria, Robert Croser, my guide, takes me to St Michael's a stone's throw from Lowther Castle.
St Michael’s Church stands within an extensive Churchyard within Lowther park and in the shadow of the ruined Lowther Castle. A spectacular location which overlooks the River Lowther and commands fine views over forest and fell. From ‘hog-back’ Saxon burial stones unearthed in the Churchyard, it is clear that Christian worship has continued on this site for some 1000 years.

Lowther Castle & Garden Spring 2022 | Garden Visit | Gardens in Cumbria | Lake District
We visited Lowther Castle and Garden in May this year for the first time and shot these clips. We really enjoyed the gardens, which in contrast with the castle ruin walls, made for great photography. The gardens have been re-designed by Dan Pearson, some parts are still under development.

Lowther Castle is a country house in the county of Cumbria, England. It has belonged to the Lowther family the Earls of Lonsdale, since the Middle Ages but is now a fully managed ruined shell of the castle and some gardens since 2011. This is our second visit to Lowther and the first was in spring 2016, a year before the official opening in 2017. On the last visit there was no Courtyard café and the gardens in front of the castle ruins had just been planted out. The Lost Castle adventure area had just been started and an orchard, that we did not visit this time, had not been planted very long.

However on this visit the new Rose Garden was open and looked a treat with every shrub named.
If you visit please do not expect to see all places on the map that I show in my video. It is lovely plan illustrated by Sarah Farooqi on how the gardens and areas will look as time passes, so many areas are still “work in progress”. The Parterre Tapestry Garden and the New Rose Garden are beautiful, all designed by Dan Pearson.
I would like to go back again to see the results, perhaps one spring or when their wild flower meadow is at its best in midsummer.
Thank you for view viewing.

Some brief notes on Lowther Castle and Gardens .
Around 1939 to 1940 the castle was requisitioned for the war effort and used for tank development but was returned to the family in 1954. The family could not afford to maintain it so offered to give it away to the National Trust and other institutions. However, in those depressed post-war years they did not find any takers so, to avoid taxes, they stripped the castle and removed the roof.
Significant improvements have been achieved since then. After the death of Lord Lonsdale in 2006, the chicken-broiler unit and the trees were removed. With a great deal of funding from various sources, some garden restoration was done and restoration of the castle shell and conversion of the stables was also completed.
After an initial £9 million restoration, the castle and some gardens opened to the public in 2011 for the first time since 1938 but other garden areas were still overgrown at that time. In 2016, the Lowther family again began to manage the property in advance of the official re-opening for the 2017 season. In October 2018 the part-demolished castle shell and the wrecked garden was resurrected. Lowther once again was one of the leading showplaces of Cumbria and in 2018 was a larger visitor attraction in the Cumbria Tourism Awards and in mid-June 2019, the adventure playground in the woods was and still is a big attraction for younger visitors.
