Lorry is a former entertainment venue in the Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen, Denmark. It takes its name after its founder, Frederik Laurentius Feilberg, who was popularly known as Lorry. The listed building complex now houses TV2/Lorry, TV2's local news station for the Copenhagen area; a small theatre, Riddersalen; and a café.
History
Early history
Lorry's history as an entertainment venue goes back to 1834 when the country house Enighedslyst was converted into a tea garden. In the mid-1860s it became an entertainment venue where female singers performed in front of an audience consisting mainly of local craftsmen. The restaurateur Carl Kehlet took the place over in 1877 and his successful business enabled him to purchase the entire property. He turned the ground floor into a restaurant and moved the singing girls upstairs to Café Chantant, a new venue on the first flor. The establishment gradually began to attract a larger audience. Among the well-known guests were the writer and painter Holger Drachmann, who found his muse, Edith, among the singers.
Frederiksberg (Danish pronunciation:[fɑːɑʁiɡ̊sˈbeɐ̯]) is a town (the Frederiksberg Municipality) in Denmark's Capital City Region (Region Hovedstaden). It is surrounded by but separate from Copenhagen. It occupies an area of less than 9km2 and had a population of 103,192 in 2015. Frederiksberg is an enclave surrounded by the city of Copenhagen. There is no visible border between Frederiksberg and the other districts of Copenhagen, and the town is informally considered to be a part of Copenhagen. For instance, the Copenhagen Zoo as well as several stations of the Copenhagen Metro (the stations Forum, Frederiksberg, Fasanvej, Lindevang, and Flintholm) are located in Frederiksberg. The Copenhagen S-train system also has several stations in Frederiksberg, including Peter Bangs Vej station and Flintholm station.
History
Frederiksberg's original name was Tulehøj (= Thyle-hill), indicating that a thul (= thyle) lived there, the reciter of eldritch times. The term is known from the Snoldelev rune stone. In Beowulf, Unferth holds the same title. In Håvamål, Odin himself is referred to as "the old thul".Thula translates as "song", like in the Rigsthulapoem from the Edda. By 1443 the name Tulehøj was spelled Tulleshøy. It was regarded as Copenhagen's border to the west. People lived here since the Bronze Age.
Frederiksberg Kommune is a municipality (Danish, kommune) on the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in Denmark. It is surrounded by the city of Copenhagen. The municipality, co-extensive with its seat, covers a total area (land and water) of 8.71km2 (3.36 square miles; 871 hectares) according to the Municipal Key Figures (De Kommunale Nøgletal;www.noegletal.dk) and has a population of 103,192 (1 January 2015) making it the smallest municipality in Denmark area-wise, the fifth most populous, and the most densely populated. Its mayor is Jørgen Glenthøj from the Conservative People's Party (Det Konservative Folkeparti).
Overview
The city of Frederiksberg is the only town in the municipality, and is therefore the site of its municipal council.
Frederiksberg is located as an enclave within the municipality of Copenhagen, the national capital. The municipality was originally situated west of Copenhagen, but after a number of smaller municipalities were merged with Copenhagen in 1901, it became completely surrounded by Copenhagen.
