Loon Mountain hosts more skiers than any other resort in the state. The resort was founded in the 1960s.
On September 19, 2007, Boyne Resorts, a Michigan-based resort company, announced it had acquired the lease to operate Loon from Booth Creek Ski Holdings. In 2011 the resort was expanded by four trails. It also increased the number of snow guns by 170 to a total of 600, at a total cost of $1.4 million.
One notable activity available during the summer at the resort is the Guest Train Engineer Program, allowing guests to learn how to operate a live steam locomotive on the 2ft (610mm)narrow gauge J.E. Henry Railway.
A ski resort is a resort developed for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports. In Europe a ski resort is a town or village in a ski area– a mountainous area, where there are ski trails and other supporting services such as hotels, restaurants, equipment rentals, and a ski lift system. In North America it is more common for ski areas to exist well away from towns, and the term ski resort is used for a destination resort, often purpose-built and self-contained, where skiing is the main activity.
Types
The ski industry has identified advancing generations of ski resorts:
The term ski station is also used, particularly in Europe, for a skiing facility which is not located in or near a town or village.
A ski resort which is also open for summer activities is often referred to as a mountain resort.
Facilities and amenities
Ski areas have marked paths for skiing known as runs, trails or pistes. Ski areas typically have one or more chairlifts for moving skiers rapidly to the top of hills, and to interconnect the various trails. Rope tows can also be used on short slopes (usually beginner hills or bunny slopes). Larger ski areas may use gondolas or aerial trams for transportation across longer distances within the ski area.
The 3,065-foot (934m) mountain is known for Loon Mountain Ski Resort, which, like most New England mountain resorts, has expanded into an all-season recreation area.
Geography
There are two summits to Loon Mountain: the North Peak at 3,065 feet (934m), and the South Peak at 2,807 feet (856m) above sea level. Between the two peaks and slightly to the north, at an elevation of 2,418 feet (737m), is Loon Pond. "Loon Peak", with an elevation of 2,733 feet (833m), is a northwest spur of North Peak. Each of the three peaks is the summit of one or more chairlifts belonging to the ski resort.
Loon Mountain is at the western end of Scar Ridge, which runs southeast to Mount Osceola and has numerous summits, the highest of which is 3,774 feet (1,150m) above sea level. To the southwest of Loon Mountain is 2,424-foot (739m) Russell Mountain.
The north side of Loon Mountain drains via Boyle Brook and Loon Pond Brook to the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River. To the west of the South Peak, Horner Brook drains directly to the Pemigewasset River. The southern slopes of Loon Mountain drain via Talford Brook to Eastman Brook and then into the Pemigewasset, which flows south to the Merrimack River and ultimately the Gulf of Maine.

Switzerland is one of the best destinations for Winter sports, especially for skiing! The Swiss Alps are full of fantastic ski resorts. Among the many, I present you Top 5 that I consider belonging to the best ski resorts of Switzerland.
The SILVRETTA ARENA at Samnaun is one that is often overlooked, while you actually should eye at it as it is one of the very best in all of Switzerland! The Silvretta Arena is a binational ski resort that allows you to switch between Switzerland and Austria. It’s very snow sure, as most of the slopes are above 2000 meters! You will have many slopes and lifts to choose, thus, much to explore. It’s best to stay here for at least 3-5 days! Samnaun is by the way easier to be reached from the Austrian side. Explore the village of Samnaun too! It’s a beautiful Swiss Winter village and also great for shopping, since it’s entirely duty-free.
The ALETSCH ARENA is located in the canton of Valais and offers you fantastic panoramas over the Swiss Alps, including the Aletsch Glacier and the iconic Matterhorn. There are three stations: Fiescheralp, Bettmeralp and Riederalp. The resort is very sunny but at the same time snow sure! Great slopes are from the Bettmerhorn down to Bettmeralp or then at Schönbiel, Riederfurka or Flesch. Bettmeralp is one of the most beautiful Winter villages of Switzerland, do walk around, especially during sunset and dusk! The best way to arrive there is by train; it stops directly at the cabin station down in Betten. It is recommended to stay at the Aletsch Arena for at least 3 days.
The PORTES DU SOLEIL is at where you can travel on ski! It’s so large that you would need more than 10 days to explore all of it. The major station on the Swiss side is at Les Crosets, at where you have numerous lifts and slopes to try out. Very nice is the Grand tour starting from Morgins heading to Champoussin, Les Crosets, Avoriaz, Châtel and then again reaching back at Morgins. Try out the probably steepest slope in the entire world: The Swiss wall. It has an incline of over 90%! Due to the incredibly large size of this ski resort it is recommended to stay here for around 5 to 7 days.
FLUMSERBERG is the perfect ski resort for one-day trips. It is easily reached by car or train from most of the regions of Switzerland. The resort is quite small but offers you many slopes. Very nice are the pine tree forest back to Tannenboden, the slope down from the Leist to Panüöl and the witch forest “Häxäwäldli”. The main peak of Flumserberg is the Maschgenkamm from where you can access most of the other parts of the resort. The perfect length of stay is 2 days; stay overnight at Tannenboden and enjoy a marvellous sunrise!
SAAS-FEE/SAASTAL is the most snow sure ski resort due to its high elevation and limited exposure. Most of the upper parts are up on the glacier, which is a very unique experience. The best peaks to visit are the Mittelallalin and Hohsaas. The major asset of this ski resort are the very long slopes; it will take you 20-30 minutes to ski down from the Mittelallalin to the village of Saas-Fee. The sunniest site of this ski resort is at Saas-Grund. Very underrated but actually perfect for skiing and less busy! The village of Saas-Fee is also suitable for non-skiers and families to visit; especially since it is car-free. In that case, consider going up for lunch at the Mittelallalin at the revolving restaurant and then explore the ice pavilion inside the glacier.
A great hotel is the Capra (sponsored content). A fantastic 5-Star Hotel that offers brilliant service and hospitality. The rooms are very cozy, the food delicious and the spa perfect for relaxation!

Beyond convenient access to the slopes, what makes the best ski town? For some, it's having access to fantastic restaurants, bars, and shops. For others, it's about great accommodations, a small-town vibe, or a historic atmosphere.

Méribel like you've never seen before. This week we take you on an extraordinary adventure in the Méribel valley with once in a lifetime winter activities in the heart of the largest ski area in the world, the 3 Valleys.
Meribel is one of the prettiest ski villages in France with its beautiful wood clad and chalet-style buildings spread across the valley.
We were so lucky to have both incredible snowy conditions with plenty of powder as well as many stunning perfect sunny days which made for great filming conditions.
The winter activities in this video show you that there is much more than just skiing on the slopes in Meribel which happens to be part of the 3 Valley and at the heart of it, the largest ski area in the world.
Have you been to Meribel before?
What was your experience?
