Swimming Men's 4 x 100m Medley Relay Final Full Replay from the Aquatics Centre at the London 2012 Olympic Games. - 4 August 2012
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

📺 Re-live ALL the incredible #Paris2024 action ➡️ https://go.olympics.com/watch
The Jamaican team set a new world record of 36.84s at the London 2012 Games.
Here we re-live the full race coverage as Jamaica's team of Carter, Frater, Blake and Bolt take the gold medal.
Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men. =========================================

Controversy at London's 1908 Olympics
If you think controversy at the Olympics is a modern phenomena, the 1908 Games will make you think again. Rows over rules were rife, and the so-called 'British sense of fair play' was conspicuous by its absence.
But along with the scandal, 1908 produced a truly memorable marathon and set the standard for future Olympics.
David Eades looks back to the first time London hosted the Games.

The 1908 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the IV Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event which was held in 1908 in London, United Kingdom, from 27 April to 31 October 1908.
These games were originally scheduled to be held in Rome, but relocation on financial grounds followed a disastrous eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906. Rome eventually hosted the 1960 Summer Olympics. They were the fourth chronological modern Summer Olympics in keeping with the now-accepted four-year cycle as opposed to the alternate four-year cycle of the proposed Intercalated Games. The IOC president for these Games was Baron Pierre de Coubertin. Lasting a total of 187 days, or 6 months and 4 days, thes...

The 1908 Olympic marathon took place in sweltering heat, leading to one of the most dramatic race finishes in the history of the Games. Race leader Dorando Pietri, struggling to stay on his feet as he neared the finish line, was famously disqualified for the assistance he received. This marathon would prove significant for another reason, as the distance from Windsor Castle to White City - 26 miles and 385 yards - would be adopted as the standard race length from 1924.
Lasting a total of 187 days, or 6 months and 4 days, these games were the longest in modern Olympics history; since 1988, the Games have ordinarily lasted 17 days.

How London laid the groundwork for sustainable sporting architecture | CNBC Reports
Governments hosting high-profile sporting events like the Olympics and FIFA World Cup are repeatedly criticized for building massive, unsustainable venues, often abandoned in the years after the big event. In 2012, London aimed to change that narrative, praised at the time by climate activists for paving the way for sustainable architecture. Nearly a decade later, how are these venues being used and repurposed? What can other host countries learn from 2012? CNBC's Tom Chitty reports from London.

Jamaican Usain Bolt sets a new Olympic record as he retains his 100m Gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics on the 5 August 2012.
Fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake finished second, with USA's Justin Gatlin taking the Bronze medal in the event.
