Several historical bridges named London Bridge have spanned the River Thames between the City of London and Southwark, in central London. The current crossing, which opened to traffic in 1974, is a box girder bridge built from concrete and steel. This replaced a 19th-century stone-arched bridge, which in turn superseded a 600-year-old medieval structure. This was preceded by a succession of timber bridges, the first built by the Roman founders of London.
The current bridge stands at the western end of the Pool of London but is positioned 30 metres (98ft) upstream from previous alignments. The traditional ends of the medieval bridge were marked by St Magnus-the-Martyr on the northern bank and Southwark Cathedral on the southern shore. Until Putney Bridge opened in 1729, London Bridge was the only road-crossing of the Thames downstream of Kingston-upon-Thames. Its importance has been the subject of popular culture throughout the ages such as in the nursery rhyme "London Bridge Is Falling Down" and its inclusion within art and literature.
The London Bridge is a bridge over the River Dodder in Dublin. The current bridge was opened in 1857 with an unknown engineer designing the structure. A previous bridge was built at some point between 1798 and 1837 based on historical maps of Dublin.
The bridge connects Bath Avenue to Londonbridge Road on the R111. Traffic across the bridge is limited to one lane by traffic lights at each end.
London Bridge: Guignol's Band II (French:Le Pont de Londres) is a novel by the French writer Louis-Ferdinand Céline, published posthumously in 1964. The story follows Ferdinand, an invalided French World War I veteran who lives in exile in London, where he is involved with questionable people and falls in love with a 14-year-old girl. It is the sequel to Céline's 1944 novel Guignol's Band.
Reception
The book was reviewed in Publishers Weekly in 1995: "Whatever one thinks of Celine's politics, it's hard to deny his position as an innovative, influential and still readable writer." The critic described some of the novel's plot elements, and wrote: "All this may sound distasteful, but this is the hard-edged world so perfectly suited to Celine's slangy, propulsive language, filled with ellipses and exclamation marks[.] Celine at his most grizzly is also Celine at his most maniacally funny[.]" The review ended: "Ferdinand is a semi-autobiographical character—like him, Celine was injured in the war and subsequently went to London—and, perhaps because of this personal connection, there is always a hint of vulnerability under the carapace of Celine's perpetual cynicism."
"London Bridge Is Falling Down" (also known as "My Fair Lady" or "London Bridge") is a traditional English nursery rhyme and singing game, which is found in different versions all over the world. It deals with the depredations of London Bridge and attempts, realistic or fanciful, to repair it. It may date back to bridge rhymes and games of the late Middle Ages, but the earliest records of the rhyme in English are from the seventeenth century. The lyrics were first printed in close to its modern form in the mid-eighteenth century and became popular, particularly in Britain and the United States in the nineteenth century.
The modern melody was first recorded in the late nineteenth century and the game resembles arch games of the Middle Ages, but seems to have taken its modern form in the late nineteenth century. It has a Roud Folk Song Index number of 502. Several theories have been advanced to explain the meaning of the rhyme and the identity of the "fair lady" of the refrain. The rhyme is one of the most well known in the world and has been referenced in a variety of works of literature and popular culture.
It was first discovered by the European explorers Captain Mark Currie, Brigadier Major John Ovens, Joseph Wild and accompanied by two nameless aboriginal guides in 1822. It was in danger of being flooded by the construction of the London Bridge Dam but owing to its limited catchment, the Australian Government constructed Googong Dam instead. London Bridge is inside a nature reserve and is thus now protected.
The span closer to the shoreline collapsed unexpectedly on 15 January 1990, leaving two tourists stranded on the outer span before being rescued by helicopter. No one was injured in the event. Prior to the collapse, the arch was known as London Bridge because of its similarity to its namesake.
London is a poem by Samuel Johnson, produced shortly after he moved to London. Written in 1738, it was his first major published work. The poem in 263 lines imitates Juvenal's Third Satire, expressed by the character of Thales as he decides to leave London for Wales. Johnson imitated Juvenal because of his fondness for the Roman poet and he was following a popular 18th-century trend of Augustan poets headed by Alexander Pope that favoured imitations of classical poets, especially for young poets in their first ventures into published verse.
London was published anonymously and in multiple editions during 1738. It quickly received critical praise, notably from Pope. This would be the second time that Pope praised one of Johnson's poems; the first being for Messiah, Johnson's Latin translation of Pope's poem. Part of that praise comes from the political basis of the poem. From a modern view, the poem is outshined by Johnson's later poem, The Vanity of Human Wishes as well as works like his A Dictionary of the English Language, his Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets, and his periodical essays for The Rambler, The Idler, and The Adventurer.

I used three stunning pieces of music in this video:
Lost Time by Eveningland - a complex but extremely catch electronic instrumental track and the slow pace of footsteps recalling a medieval pavane dance. I have no idea who Eveningland are but their music is excellent.
Running Waters by Audionautix - A superb and rousing, folk-style instrumental, with overtones of Irish music.
Ammil by The Tides - a quiet and contemplative instrumental that still reminds me of past times in Ireland.

The UK has proposed building a 20 billion pound bridge across the Irish Sea, connecting Scotland and Northern Ireland. The bridge would be 45 kilometers long and would be a combined road and rail crossing, cutting the 2.5 hour long ferry to a 30 minute car or train ride.
It would link up with local highways and the UK’s high speed rail network, boosting trade and allowing for quick transportation throughout the British isles. However, it would have to deal with treacherous weather and would cross Beaufort’s Dyke, a 300 meter deep munitions dump filled with hazardous weapons.

"Daly's Bridge", in Cork, Ireland, is better known as the Shakey Bridge. Because it shakes. But what happens when a bridge like that has to be repaired and refurbished? • Thanks to Cllr McCarthy: his site is http://corkheritage.ie/ !

I did try (a lot!) to get an interview with someone from RPS Group, who were in charge of the refurbishment, but I just wasn't able to make contact. However, I'm indebted to Michael Minehane, principal engineer, whose talk to Engineers Ireland gives a lot of in-depth information about the bridge was refurbished! You can watch it here, along with Cllr McCarthy's history of the bridge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j52poh2ZfSA

The Old Bailey sat in silence during the graphic clip of the "quick and frenzied" attack on a train from Guildford to Waterloo.
The 51-year-old was stabbed by fellow passenger Darren Pencille on 4 January.

A man who was knocked down by a double decker bus in Reading got back on his feet immediately after the crash. Simon Smith can be seen flying almost 20ft as the bus hits him, but he gets back up as if nothing happened. Reading Buses said an investigation into the crash was under way. The cause of the crash is unclear, but no arrests have been made.
