People have been living in and around Llantrisant for millennia. Two Bronze Ageburial mounds are on Mynydd Garthmaelwg, the opposite side of the Ely Valley. A 1.05 metres (3ft) tall, by 1.68 metres (6ft) wide, possibly Bronze Age, standing stone, was discovered in Miskin during excavations prior to the M4 motorway construction. An Iron Agehillfort stands on Rhiwsaeson Hill. The enclosure, now known as Caerau Hillfort, measures 230 metres (755ft) by 180 metres (591ft).
A settlement has existed on this site from at least the beginning of the 6th century, when the poet Aneurin wrote of 'the white houses of Glamorgan' when referring to Llantrisant.
It was seized around 1246 by Richard de Clare who built Llantrisant Castle. It is thought that de Clare established the borough of Llantrisant though the exact charter occurred in 1346.
These were probably used up to the 90's. along a secret laneway in a quiet area where very few would go was a house which was actually a secret guard station for the several munitions bunkers up the lane. Complete with its own garages but looking like a farmhouse and probably ready at a moments notice to pounce on anyone wandering up this laneway this ammo dump was not known about and discovered until recently be explorers.
One of our militaries well kept secrets.

Gwyn Thomas Travels From Llantrisant to Rhondda
In the 1960's the Welsh writer and broadcaster Gwyn Thomas made a series of short films about life in South Wales. Many of the films have been lost but some survive and present us with a fascinating historical archive of a lost time.
Sadly, the original audio of this recording has been damaged beyond repair. But the script has survived and Gwyn Thomas' words are voiced here by Glyn Houston.
