The area now called England was first inhabited by modern humans during the Upper Palaeolithic period, but takes its name from the Angles, one of the Germanic tribes who settled during the 5th and 6th centuries. England became a unified state in the 10th century, and since the Age of Discovery, which began during the 15th century, has had a significant cultural and legal impact on the wider world. The English language, the Anglican Church, and English law – the basis for the common law legal systems of many other countries around the world – developed in England, and the country's parliamentary system of government has been widely adopted by other nations. The Industrial Revolution began in 18th-century England, transforming its society into the world's first industrialised nation.
Great Britain and Ireland was a set of special commemorativepostage stamps issued by the Royal Mail in 2006. The stamps were the final part of the British Journey series, which had previously featured Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales. It was available as mint stamps, as a presentation pack, stamps cards, and a first day cover.
British Journey series
These stamps are the final issue in the British Journey series; which started in 2003 with Scotland, followed in 2004 with Northern Ireland and Wales, and South West England in 2005. The series was brought to a premature end with this issue due to a lack of popularity amongst collectors.
Stamp details
The stamps were issued as a block of stamps, five wide by two deep. The photographs selected for this issue show no sky but are intended to demonstrate the colours and textures of the United Kingdom. All values are first class.
The Anglo-Saxon mission began in the last decade of the 7th century in Frisia, whence, Benedict reminded the monks he urged to come to the continental missions, their forebears had come: "Take pity on them, for they themselves are now saying, 'We are of one blood and one bone with you.'" The missions, which drew down the energy and initiative of the English church, spread south and east from there. Almost immediately the Anglo-Saxon missionaries came in contact with the Pippinids, the new dominant family in Frankish territories. The earliest monastery founded by Anglo-Saxons on the continent is Willibrord's Abbey of Echternach (698), founded at a villa granted him by a daughter of Dagobert II. Pepin II, who wished to extend his influence in the Low Countries, granted free passage to Rome to Willibrord, to be consecrated Bishop of Frisia; Norman F. Cantor singles this out as the first joint project between Carolingians and the Papacy: "It set the pattern for their increasing association in the first half of the 8th century as a result of their joint support of the efforts of the Anglo-Saxon missionaries"

Cambridge, Ely, & Littleport (England Travel Vlog - Part 1)
Our recent trip to England started out with a weekend getaway to Cambridge, Ely, & Littleport. Some of the highlights include The Big Weekend in Cambridge, Ely Cathedral, and The Old School in Littleport. In the late 90s, I was stationed at RAF Mildenhall, so it was nice to return to the area and see how it has changed.
Of course, the blog starts off at the Denver airport and chronicles our journey to England. We arrived on Friday morning, but mostly recovered from jet lag and visited with relatives. Saturday morning, we got up and headed to Cambridge. We walked the streets and checked out some of the colleges and The Big Weekend Festival.
On Sunday, we explored The Old School which was built in 1847. In 1990, it was converted to townhomes and I bought one of them when I was stationed ne...

Before heading back to the London area, we took a tour of Ely cathedral and its Octagon Tower. This cathedral dates back to the 11th century and the tower was built in the 1300s.

► FAQ
Q• Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
A• We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.
Q• Why are your video's so behind?
A• We would love to release all our video's in the same week that we film them but that isn't possible for us. Jo only really has the capacity to edit two video's per week and as we make a video for each cruise that we do and we some times cruise 3 or 4 or 5 times a week we inevitably get behind. We fit in the vlogs around our lives not the other way round.
In today's video we continue our journey south on the River Great Ouse, stopping in Littleport.

If you're after the Station Cafe, don't look for it by the station. It's much nearer the centre of the town.

In 1990, it was converted to townhomes and I bought one of them when I was stationed nearby. We stayed in another of The Old School townhomes which is now an art gallery and AirBNB (see below for details about the art gallery).
Before heading back to the London area, we took a tour of Ely cathedral and its Octagon Tower. This cathedral dates back to the 11th century and the tower was built in the 1300s.

This is part two of my brief exploration of the picturesque city of Ely. My guides, Simon and Sharon Brown, lead me away from the cathedral to the Great Ouse and the old port to look at narrowboats and pleasure cruisers.

The Fen Rivers Way is a 50 mile long distance trail beginning in the city centre of Cambridge and follows the River Cam and Great Ouse to the coastal town of Kings Lynn. Part 4 starts at Littleport and follows the River Great Ouse to Downham Market.
The route is well served by the rail link to London so the route can be completed in sections much easier than other trails.
Have any questions about the route or area I'm walking in? Why not get in touch via Facebook?

This video is a short video Wwalk around Ely city center. Ely is one of the smallest cities in England with population around 20 000 people. It is a cathedral city in Cambridshire. It is located on the top of so called 'Isle of Ely' - the Kimmeridge clay island in the Cambridgeshire Fens. The city has longtime history going back to Iron Age and Roman period. Christian community and Abbey was founded here in 673 AD by Anglo Saxon princess, Saint Ethelreda. Unfortunately, it is nothing left from the Anglo Saxon church.
Last 1000 years the city is dominated by Norman Cathedral. The construction of the Cathedral started in 1083 and it took 300 years to complete it. The Cathedral is so massive that you can easily see it 5-8 miles away from Ely. Surrounded by medieval streets and buildings the Cathedral amazes you with its splendor.
Another place to visit is Oliver Cromwell's House - the former home of the Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell.
Enjoy the walk through this lovely city!
