Kristin Hersh (born August 7, 1966) is an American singer, songwriter and author.
Early life
Born in Atlanta as Martha Kristin Hersh, she was raised in Newport, Rhode Island. She learned guitar at age nine from her father, and started writing songs soon after.
Musical career
Throwing Muses and early solo work
While in high school, Hersh formed Throwing Muses in 1983 with stepsister Tanya Donelly and friends including Elaine Adamedes, Becca Blumen, Leslie Langston and David Narcizo. Hersh sang and wrote most of Throwing Muses' songs in changing tempos, with Donelly composing and singing some of the songs as well.
Throwing Muses, then based in Boston, Massachusetts, was the first American group to be signed by the British 4AD Records label in 1986, releasing the EP, Chains Changed. In the next few years, the EP The Fat Skier and the album House Tornado were released and the band opened for The Pixies during their first UK tour. The 4AD biography of the band describes their sound as "...joining the dots between elliptical post-punk, harmonious folk jangle and rockabilly thunder without ever settling into standard genre patterns."
Little Birdy are an Australian indie rock band formed in Perth, Western Australia in 2002 by singer and guitarist Katy Steele, drummer Matt Chequer, guitarist and keyboardist Simon Leach, and bass guitarist Scott O'Donoghue. They gained public attention when their single "Relapse" gained popularity on alternative radio stations such as Triple J, leading them to be signed with the record label Eleven: A Music Company. To date, they have released three studio albums (all three of which entered the top ten in the ARIA charts), two EPs, and ten singles.
Early history
Katy Steele's father Rick Steele is a local blues musician in various cover bands, and her brothers Jesse and Luke were both members of The Sleepy Jackson. Jesse left the band in 2000. Steele was the singer-songwriter and guitarist in her band, The Plastik Scene. A friend of Luke's, Simon Leach, heard Steele singing at her brother's 21st birthday party. "Katy was always there... She was around 15 when I saw her sing. Three years later, Katy and I were playing together." Steele left her band and, with Leach as drummer, they performed several gigs as a duo. Scott ('Barney') O'Donoghue later offered to play bass guitar. Leach became tired of percussion and began playing guitar when Matt Chequer joined on drums. In 2002 Little Birdy was formed, named after the Ween song of the same name.
Pure Guava is the third studio album by Ween. It is their first album to be released on a major label.
Background
Originally released in 1992 through Elektra Records, it features what is perhaps Ween's most well-known song, "Push th' Little Daisies". "Push th' Little Daisies" was released as a single on August Records in 1993, including both the Album and Radio Edit versions of the song (the latter replacing the word "shit" with a sample of Prince squealing from "Alphabet St.") and the tracks "Ode to Rene", "I Smoke Some Grass (Really Really High)" and "Mango Woman".
Many of the songs on this album come from two tapes that the band made for friends, the first being titled "Springtape", and the second titled "The Caprice Classic Tape", as stated by Dean Ween on JJJ radio in 1993. Pure Guava marked the last time the group would record on a four-track until 2007's La Cucaracha.
Reception and legacy
Pure Guava is often considered to be one of Ween's finest albums. Allmusic editor Heather Phares called the album "more polished and concise" than their previous albums The Pod and GodWeenSatan: The Oneness and that the uncompromising album hints at just how much further the band could go with their music. Phares awarded Pure Guava five out of five stars.
Little Birdy is the debut EP by Australian indie rock band Little Birdy. The EP was co-produced by Little Birdy with Andy Lawson, Joel Quartermain, and Rodney Aravena from Perth's Debaser Studios. It was released after their 2003 Kiss My WAMi win for "Best New Band" and "Best Female Vocalist", and just in time to coincide with East Coast appearances at Livid.
"Relapse" which reached the number 1 most requested song on Triple J's Net 50. and number 16 on the Triple J Hottest 100, with "Baby Blue" coming in at number 25. The EP reached a peak of number 27 on the Australian ARIA Singles Charts. "I Should Have Known" (originally packaged under the name "I Should of Known") was later re-recorded as "Andy Warhol" for their debut album BigBigLove, as was "Relapse".
'Your Ghost' was Kristin Hersh's debut solo single, taken from 'Hips and Makers' her 1994 solo album. Michael Stipe also features.

Lovely empty baseball field, just one of the places to sun... Like a hot pink kite with no string... Heads rolling... You make heads roll... Whistle the day away... Whistle one day away... You make headway... Drift till the stuff that you're breathing seems like air... You go back there... Lovely empty baseball field, just one of the places to set your lawn chair... Like a hummingbird with no wings... Heads rolling... You have time and baby oil shine... Whisper the day away... Whisper one day away... You make headway... Drift till a piece of a place nests in your hair... You go back there... Talking at the radio... Just one of the places to shoot off your mouth... Like a hot summer dog on a lawn... Here today, never gone... Drift today away... Drift one day away... You make headway...
