Georges Danton
Georges Jacques Danton (French: [ʒɔʁʒ dɑ̃tɔ̃]; 26 October 1759 – 5 April 1794) was a leading figure in the early stages of the French Revolution and the first President of the Committee of Public Safety. Danton's role in the onset of the Revolution has been disputed; many historians describe him as "the chief force in the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of the First French Republic". A moderating influence on the Jacobins, he was guillotined by the advocates of revolutionary terror after accusations of venality and leniency to the enemies of the Revolution.
Early life and the revolution
Danton was born in Arcis-sur-Aube in northeastern France to Jacques Danton and Mary Camus; a respectable, but not wealthy family. After obtaining a good education he became an Advocate in Paris. He married Antoinette Charpentier in 1787; they had three sons. She died 10 February 1793, whereupon Danton married Louise Sébastienne Gély, aged 16, daughter of Marc-Antoine Gély, court usher (huissier-audiencier) at the Parlement de Paris and member of the Club des Cordeliers. She looked after his two surviving sons. As a child, he was attacked by several animals, resulting in the disfigurement and scarring of the skin on his face, also contributed to by smallpox.

Danton (1983 film)
Danton (French pronunciation: [dɑ̃tɔ̃]) is a 1983 French language film depicting the last months of Georges Danton, one of the leaders of the French Revolution. It is an adaptation of the Polish play "The Danton Case" by Stanisława Przybyszewska.
The film stars Gérard Depardieu in the title role with Anne Alvaro as Éléonore Duplay. It was directed by the Polish director Andrzej Wajda and was an international co-production between companies in France, Poland and West Germany. All supporters of Danton (with the exception of Bourdon) are played by French actors, while Robespierre's allies are played by Poles. The film draws parallels between the Reign of Terror after the French Revolution and the situation in contemporary Poland, in which the Solidarity movement was struggling against the oppression of the Soviet-backed Polish government. The film had 1,392,779 admissions in France.

The execution device was being used many times each day inside of French towns, and anyone suspected of being an enemy of the revolution was condemned. Originally trained as a lawyer, Georges Danton was inspired to help the revolutionary cause, joining the civic guard (garde bourgeoise) in 1789. In 1790, along with some militant revolutionaries he founded the Cordeliers Club – created to prevent the abuse of power and violations against the rights of man. A brilliant public speaker, Danton quickly gained fans amongst the Jacobin faction and managed to secure a post in.the Paris Commune.
On 10 August 1792, Tuileries Palace was stormed by the National Guard of the Paris Commune – it’s unclear whether Danton actually took part in this overthrow of the monarchy, but he is credited with its success and was swiftly made Minister of Justice. By September, he had been elected into the National Convention. It’s believed that Danton had wanted to spare the King from execution but eventually voted for his death.
In April 1793, Danton became the Committee of Public Safety’s first president. Attempts were made to negotiate a peace with Austria, but when these failed Danton was left out of the next committee elections. As the revolution took a darker turn, Danton began to call for a more moderate approach. His continual challenges to Robespierre’s violent overtures led to his arrest on 30 March 1794, and he was beheaded a few days later.

The execution device was being used many times each day inside of French towns, and anyone suspected of being an enemy of the revolution was condemned. Georges Danton was a leading figure in the French Revolution but he encountered the wrath of Robespierre during The Reign Of Terror and because of this he also made his way for a date with the executioner.
Danton had been seen by many as a heroic figure but his rivalry with Robespierre led to him losing his life. Danton was a senior figure in The National Convention but his moderate ideas were disliked by many and for this Robespierre saw him as an enemy of the French people. But like so many and even Robespierre he lost his head on the brutal execution device that also claimed the lives of the French King and Queen.

Here there is a collision, perhaps an unavoidable collision, between sets of values which are literally incompatible. Previous generations supposed that all good things could in some way be reconciled, this is true no longer. If you read Buchner's tragedy 'the Death of Danton', in which Robespierre finally causes the death of Danton and Desmoulins in the course of the revolution, and you ask 'was Robespierre wrong to do this?' No. The tragedy is such that Danton, although he was a sincere revolutionary who committed certain errors didn't deserve to die and Robespierre was perfectly right to put him to death. In some sense you have a collision here of what Hegel afterwards called 'good with good'. It isn't due to error, it's due to some kind of collision or conflict, of an unavoidable kind, of loose elements wandering about the earth, in some way. Of values which couldn't in some sense be reconciled. And what matters is the people should dedicate themselves to these values with all that is in them, and if they do that then they are suitable heroes for tragedy. If they do not do that then they are philistines, then they are members of the bourgeois, then they're no good and not worth writing about..."

Before the Revolutionary tribunal, Danton boldly spoke his mind. To silence him, the Convention decreed that a suspect on trial who insulted national justice be excluded from the debate. “I will no longer defend myself,” Danton cried. “Let me be led to death, I shall go to sleep in glory.” Danton was guillotined with his friends on April 5, 1794. “Show my head to the people,” he said to the executioner. “It is worth the trouble.”
Originally trained as a lawyer, Georges Danton was inspired to help the revolutionary cause, joining the civic guard (garde bourgeoise) in 1789. In 1790, along with some militant revolutionaries he founded the Cordeliers Club – created to prevent the abuse of power and violations against the rights of man. A brilliant public speaker, Danton quickly gained fans amongst the Jacobin faction and managed to secure a post in.the Paris Commune.
On 10 August 1792, Tuileries Palace was stormed by the National Guard of the Paris Commune – it’s unclear whether Danton actually took part in this overthrow of the monarchy, but he is credited with its success and was swiftly made Minister of Justice. By September, he had been elected into the National Convention. It’s believed that Danton had wanted to spare the King from execution but eventually voted for his death.
In April 1793, Danton became the Committee of Public Safety’s first president. Attempts were made to negotiate a peace with Austria, but when these failed Danton was left out of the next committee elections. As the revolution took a darker turn, Danton began to call for a more moderate approach. His continual challenges to Robespierre’s violent overtures led to his arrest on 30 March 1794, and he was beheaded a few days later.

Résumé : Eté 1793. Commencée dans l'enthousiasme, la Révolution Française vit des heures douloureuses. A l'extérieur comme à l'intérieur, l'édification de la Nation nouvelle est remise en cause par de multiples oppositions et de non moins nombreux échecs. La coalition européenne semble reprendre le dessus, les Vendéens remportent des victoires et le peuple de Paris souffre à nouveau de la disette. Il faut réagir. D'un côté, Robespierre, le pur et dur, prône la "Terreur", pour que la Révolution puisse être menée à son terme. De l'autre, Danton, qui vient de quitter sa retraite d'Arcy-sur-Aube, plaide pour la paix à tous les niveaux. Aidé par le journaliste Camille Desmoulins, s'appuyant sur le peuple, Danton espère faire triompher ses idées. Politicien de très grande fermeté, théoricien et analyste impitoyable, Robespierre manipule la Convention pour aller coûte que coûte au terme du projet révolutionnaire. Dans une ultime tentative de conciliation, les deux géants de 1789 vont se rencontrer; en vain : la rupture est consommée avant même leur entretien. Robespierre fait alors arrêter Danton qui passera devant le Tribunal Révolutionnaire...

Le fameux dîner entre Maximilien Robespierre et Georges Danton a probablement eu lieu dans l'appartement de Danton, situé au numéro 18 de la rue de la Croix-des-Petits-Champs, à Paris. Certains historiens pensent également que le dîner aurait pu avoir lieu dans un restaurant (de la rue Saint-Honoré?) ou une autre résidence privée (dans l'est de Paris?).

Georges Danton
Georges Jacques Danton (French: [ʒɔʁʒ dɑ̃tɔ̃]; 26 October 1759 – 5 April 1794) was a leading figure in the early stages of the French Revolution and the first President of the Committee of Public Safety. Danton's role in the onset of the Revolution has been disputed; many historians describe him as "the chief force in the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of the First French Republic". A moderating influence on the Jacobins, he was guillotined by the advocates of revolutionary terror after accusations of venality and leniency to the enemies of the Revolution.
Early life and the revolution
Danton was born in Arcis-sur-Aube in northeastern France to Jacques Danton and Mary Camus; a respectable, but not wealthy family. After obtaining a good education he became an Advocate in Paris. He married Antoinette Charpentier in 1787; they had three sons. She died 10 February 1793, whereupon Danton married Louise Sébastienne Gély, aged 16, daughter of Marc-Antoine Gély, court usher (huissier-audiencier) at the Parlement de Paris and member of the Club des Cordeliers. She looked after his two surviving sons. As a child, he was attacked by several animals, resulting in the disfigurement and scarring of the skin on his face, also contributed to by smallpox.
