Climbing D.O. Lee Peak to see the Big Boulder Lakes | Backpacking the Idaho White Clouds Episode #4
In episode #4 of our awesome, mostly off-trail backpacking loop in the White Clouds Mountains of Idaho we took to our hands and knees to scramble to the peak of one of the most beautiful views I've ever seen - David O' Lee Peak (AKA D.O. Lee Peak or Lee Peak). This is the third highest peak in the Idaho White Clouds Mountains, and boasts dramatic, and insanely beautiful views of the northern end of the range. Sitting at 11,348 feet, you'll be sure to stand there in awe of the beautiful Big Boulder Lakes down below. We began the hike from the western end of the peak at our camp in Bighorn Basin, and scrambled up to the saddle before making the final ascent up. There's a short scramble near the summit of the peak, where a knife edge is present on both sides of you. The climb is very stable a...

Subscribe to the channel! Thank you to everyone who watches these videos and supports the channel.
What a day! This episode of our White Clouds Backpacking Loop begins at the top of D.O. Lee Peak (the third highest peak in the range) as we begin descending from the top. We descend all the way down to the Big Boulder Lakes and stay the night at one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the entire White Clouds range: Sapphire Lake. This entire day made for quite the experience. If you've never been to Sapphire Lake and the Big Boulder Lakes, you NEED to add this to your list.

If you enjoyed this video, consider subscribing to the channel!
Bonus video in our White Clouds Backpacking Series! After a long day, and a giant push into the Boulder Chain Lakes of the Cecil D. Andrus White Clouds Mountains in southern Idaho we arrived at Scoop Lake where we made camp. Though tired and exhausted from the entire day's trek, we decided that we HAD to make the short but steep climb up to Lonesome Lake - Idaho State's highest elevation alpine lake which sits at 10,449'.
When looking at a map you'll notice that Lonesome Lake sits not too far above Scoop Lake, and that's about all we knew on how to get there. We didn't know the trail or the exact route on getting to the lake, but we eventually made it up after a couple of wrong turns. Stay tuned until the end of the video f...

Episode #6 of our White Clouds Backpacking trip is here.. and this one may boast the best views of the entire trip! We took off from Sapphire Lake in the Big Boulder Lakes section of the White Clouds, and made for the Boulder Chain Lakes. To do this, we faced two options: 1.) My biggest regret of this summit is that we both completely forgot about the registry hidden in the small pile of rocks at the summit, and so we were unable to leave our mark at the top! If you are to make it to the top, please write my name :)
Be sure to stay tuned for Episode #5 where we descend D.O. Lee down to the Big Boulder Lakes. We'll pass by Cirque Lake and stay the night at the beautiful Sapphire Lake, that has surely earned its name.

Stay tuned until the end of the video for some tips and directions on how to get up there.
From our camp at Scoop Lake, we logged 2.8 miles round trip with a total ascent of 849 vertical feet.

Episode #6 of our White Clouds Backpacking trip is here.. and this one may boast the best views of the entire trip! We took off from Sapphire Lake in the Big Boulder Lakes section of the White Clouds, and made for the Boulder Chain Lakes. To do this, we faced two options: 1.) Take the developed main trail all the way around and hike in like normal people (approximately 10-12 miles) or 2.) Save time and mileage by scrambling across a loose boulder scree field, climb up to a ridge top, and then essentially descend down a sheer vertical sketchy cliff. We didn't quite know what we were getting ourselves into, but we opted for option #2.
The day's climb was sketchy at times, but the downhill ascent into the Boulder Chain Lakes provided some absolutely spectacular views of the entire White Clouds. There were literally 360 degree views. Once down into the Boulder Chain Lakes, we passed by Hidden Lake, Hummock Lake, and made our way up to Scoop Lake where we made camp for our last night backpacking in this beautiful part of Idaho State. The day wasn't over however, and Bob and I took off for the highest lake in Idaho State - Lonesome Lake.

The White Clouds backpacking series is officially coming to an end! For those of you who followed along with each episode - thank you so much! I had a blast creating these videos, and had an even better time experiencing it all in person. I can't express enough how beautiful this area is, and I highly recommend you check out the White Clouds for yourself.
In this video, we awoke at Scoop Lake in the Boulder Chain Lakes bright and early at about 4am or so. The plan here was to get an early start on the day so we could hike out to the trailhead in a timely fashion. We had about a nine hour drive home, so the earlier we could get back to the truck the better. From Scoop Lake, we ascended up Windy Devil - a small mountain pass that leads you in and out of the Boulder Chain Lakes. From here, we traveled due west to tackle a much larger pass - Devil's Staircase. We had towering views of Castle Peak on this small trek, and I continuously tripped over rocks because I couldn't keep my eyes off the scenery. Devil's Staircase was an easy climb up the east side of its face for us, but going down the west side was a different story. Loose scree and boulders made it extremely difficult to walk down.. let alone with how steep it was. I fell twice, and sustained a nice little gash on my right wrist. Trekking Poles are 100% recommended here. Did I mention it was steep? Once down to the bottom of Devil's Staircase, we hiked out through Born Lakes, to Antz Basin, and finally to the Fourth of July Creek Trailhead.
We stopped in Stanley, ID on our way out for a burger and a brew, and reflected on the feat we just accomplished. The White Clouds were truly spectacular.
